@iBox87 By far the vast majority of Rusyn in subcarpathia are either Greek Catholic or Ukrainian Orthodox Kyiv partriach, Sidor however is affiliated with Russia Orthodox Church - Moscow patriarchs which is the most corrupt religious institution in the world. Russia is trying way too hard, even if these people do chose to be considered a different nationality, there will not be any problems, but the real number of Rusyns in Ukraine is 46 million

For those provocateurs who living in USA, Poland, Slovakia etc. What you can say about that 80% people of subcarpathian region identify them "ukrainians"? Do you think that ukrainians will give they land where lives 80% of their fellow citizens? So I have 1 question. You are crazy?
@witdex Well, in Crimea the Ukrainian population is 30%, and I doubt they speak the Ukrainian language. In Donbas, there are again some 50% of Russian speaking Ukrainians. Does Ukraine think of letting those places go? No! It doesn't even think about granting them autonomy. Crimea is autonomous only in name. In Odessa and Kiev people speak Russian, but Russian language is not official. Are Ukrainian elites crazy?
@leostomicek Russian language will be official if not it will be at least regional. This problem under discussion. Nobody forbids Russyns speak at native language or identify self like they want to. I'm ukrainian speaker person and not againts Russian second official language. But you are right our elite is crazy they manipulate this problem on each elections. It's like a Joker and Yanukovich is a president right now 'cause he had promise to make Russian lang as official.
@witdex I guess 'will be' is the official Ukrainian ideology, no matter if it is Kuchma, Yushchenko or Yanukovych who is the president. The problem of regional differences, ethnic, linguistic and in terms of historical experience in Ukraine are real and there needs to be acknowledgement of this fact. In 1991 78,2% of people of Transcarpathia voted for autonomy within Ukraine.
@witdex The 1991 referendum in Transcarpathia was initiated by local Rusyn organisation. The Rusyns can use their language but not on official level. Anyway, Ukraine I think would benefit from federalisation and decentralisation, it works in the West. It would not only help quell regional cultural demands but would also help the economy. I heard that the governors of regions are appointed by the president. I can only imagine how much corruption that must breed.
this IS NOT ANY UKRAJINA OR RUTENIA OR I DON´T KNOW WHAT ELSE !!!!!!
THIS IS SLOVAKIAN SUBCARPATHIA WHICH IS TEMPORARY OCCUPIED BY UKRAJINA SINCE 1945 AND UKRAJINIAN-RUSINS SINCE THEIR FIRST RAID WITH MONGOLIAN HUNG(A)RY-AN GYPSIES IN 896 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IT WAS, IS AND WILL BE AGAIN SLOVAKIA LIKE 1100 YEARS AGO !!!!!

Some assholes think Rusyns don't exist. Well my ancestors are Rusyn and said to me that I should not trust Ukaranians. How would that make sense if they were both the same. I am Rusyn, not Ukranian!
I would like Ukrainians who deny Rusyns as a separate nationality to solve a simple problem.
I am Lemko and consider myself Rusyn. I do not identify with the Ukrainian national ethos, I don't treat Ukrainian culture and language as my own culture and language. Ukrainian national symbols, the history of Ukraine, Ukrainian songs do not evoke any patriotic emotions in my soul.
Do you still claim that I am a member of your Ukrainian nation?
@ka82yetan Who deny you identify self what you want? I'm a half polish a half ukrainian. Same things I feel with polish symbols that you feel to ukrainian - nothing. I identify myself as ukrainian, but i have unlike traits with people for example who live in Zaporizha, because I live at Volyn. So what? Now I can say "Give me autonomy"? No, every region have own culture, and if people live in big country, I think it's better than split it and live in small villages like Slovakia, Chernogoria..
@ka82yetan on cencus 2001 in Subcarpathian region lives Ukrainians 80.5%. Hungarians 12.1 % Romanians 2.6%. Russians 2.5% Gypsies1.1% and Rusyn — 0.5% only 11.000 people identified themselves as rusyns!
@williamus26 Well, it is strange that 11,000 Rusyns were found, since they are considered to be Ukrainians anyway by the Ukrainian government. There is no Rusyn on the census menu, and the authorities might count them as Ukrainians, since that is the official ideology. When you look across the border to Slovakia, there suddenly appeared a lot of Rusyns since the Slovaks repudiated the Soviet ideology. That said, why is Fr. Sidor tried for separatism if the Rusyns are so irrelevant?
russians fuck OFF from our country, u already split ukrainans between east and west, now stop further destroying our nation, if you go carthatian mountains and tell a Rusyn this kind of garbage about atonomy thay will laugh at you
Ukrainians are diverse people from different religious backgrounds and ethnicities. but all have same nationality. no one tries to be dominant over another.
dude, or woman, of course Ukrainian is an ethnicity but it is also a nationality where ethnic Ukrainians are majority but other groups of people live there like Tatars for example. they are still Ukrainian even though they are Turkic Tatars. They are just not the ethnic Ukrainian who are Slavic. but they are still citizens of Ukraine. same as ethnic Russians vs. citizens who may live there like Uzbeks,Tatars, Kazakhs, etc. or at one time prior to 1940s,not all Polish people were ethnic Poles

Ukraine doesn t want to recognise Transcarpathia , because it is the single mountain side of Ukraine !! rusyns have good girls !! woow smocking !! father can you marry me with a rusyn girl ? i will grant independence for your country !! get marryed with me and we will have 10 children !! muhahaha!!

don t worry dear ukrainians , false states will fall !! Russia will take good care of you !! rusyns , russians , romanians, poles , tatars will be free ! Transcarpatia, Galitia , Bucovina, Crimeea, Budjak , Est part of Ukraine , will be free ! Ukraine is a product of RSSR
polovcy will never recognise rusyns and this is why - look for this movie on youtube: История Государства Российского - Шестьдесят седьмая серия "Битва на Калке"
I wonder if this language is what Grammy always said was "our way"? I know our people were Carpatho-Russian on my husband's side and Hungarian on my side. They never talked much about the old country; they were so happy to be in the USA.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think most people don't care about separating, they just want to be recognized like they are in all the other surrounding countries.
chefc buddy, i'm 100% for recognition and self-governance but they have to grow up. right now all politics over there is run by church officials or their kids, kapish?
I don't disagree with you on Sidor's group, but as I understand it, the World Congress of Rusyns (as opposed to the WRC) is made up of a broader group of intellectuals, educators, etc. from all countries and I think represent the majority, and only ask for recognition to grow the culture, not an independent state.
well, ea. group (as it stands right now) would not be able to survive w/o church support. WCR on the other hand condemned actions of Sidor and asked ukr. government to kick their ***. what kind of people do things like that? "united we stand, divided we fall" apply brother your american standards to the formula and you should see that both groups are still good for kindergarten and if independence is in stars - is still years away or stars are wrong and patriots will be wasted by stupid bunch;)
@chefc Why not a independant state? Think its bloody time we got around to it...even if we do get a fucked-up,teocractic goverment...at least it will be OUR goverment for once
I'm all for one! Though I only know what I read on the internet, and it doesn't seem that there's such a demand by the people, as of yet. So until there's one, I'm just trying to be realistic. As long as something is being done to cultivate a Rusyn Culture, it's a step forward.
I'm not sure what point you are even trying to make. The church does not run or finance the WRC, which is made up of smaller organizations. Just b/c a small group break off and claim independence, doesn't mean it's so; to gain "independence" the people would either have to take up arms and fight, which isn't happening, or go peaceful resistance like India, which I don't see happening. The next best thing would be to reclaim the culture and recognition that has been squashed for the last 50yrs.
All of my grandparents came from Subcarpathia in the teens & their villages considered themselves Russian/Carpatho-Russian, never Ukrainian. I don't understand why Ukes take umbrage at Russians claiming they are not a separate group, yet get so upset about a few hundred thousand on the other side of the mountains, who clearly developed under a different socio-political conditions, would want to maintain their own identity. I wish we could get along better, we are all Rus' in the end.
Andy Warhol was actually born in Pittsburgh... not there. I don't know if that was the bookseller's mistake or the writer of this program. His parents were from Mikova.
Yes, I read the book "Out of this Furnace", as it is the story of my own grandfather, in the mill towns of the Monongahela River below Pittsburg. Our people were ill treated (not unlike the Mexicans, etc of today). I was working with some good Mexican guys and I told the leader one day at lunch that my Grandpa was treated like the Mexicans here of today. He was surprised, 'you don't look Mexican...' , No, I said, we were treated like you are now..OK, OK, his eyes showed he got it, in friendship.
Interesting. I am descendant in part, of Hutsul immigrants that came to Argentina in 1897. They in that time already identified themselves as Ukrainians. It is not totally truth that these ethnic groups addopted the Ukrainian identity in XX century. Some of the first Ukrainian immigrants that came here in 1897 were from some regions of southwestern Ukraine: Boikivshchyna, Transcarpathia, Hutsulshchyna. All they identified as Ukrainians.
OK now, this is sounding like whiny Americans who , at the slightest provocation/hardship/insult are ready to sue and the lawyers get much money from all the arrogance and greed. In the larger scheme of things, let's keep our Rus' heritage, for there are much enemies of the Slav nations. In America when the Slavs came in droves 1880-1920's there was much controversy against them, especially from Irish Catholics, who did not like their married Priests, even tho they were Byzantine Catholics.
true, as an American of Slovak and Rus decent I have heard stories of how the Slavs were poorly treated in America when they first came. A good book that describes some of the situations is called "Out of this Furnace" which is based in the town of Braddock in Pittsburgh "where I and many Slovaks and Rus still live". It is ironic how now I am considered white when my ancestors when they came here were considered "below white"....
XIX cent (as well as 3 other east slavic nations), before there was only one east slavic ethic group and they called themselves in some variations "Russians" or "Rusyns".
girl (or gay), I can call you much more names than you can imagine 0))) but this time I wouldn't - you are a good example of a svidomit brainwashed fanatic. let people see :))
Yes, that is correct. BUT, the modern understanding is that as Russians think of Ukies as 'little Russian', so also, the Ukies think of the Lemko/Hutsel/Bokovina peoples as 'only' a bunch of mountain people. The Ukie minister guy, was really incredibly arrogant,of course, the 'party line', as he spoke. I was exposed to the language as a child, and there are differences in the enunciations, words, and whole sentence structures. This is evidence of a different culture, if not, genetic ethnicity.
The lemkos were highly influenced by poland so I understand how they may sound different.
But the Hutsuls and the Boiki I can understand completely.
I'm from western Ukraine and personally, I can't see a cultural difference between the people that call themselves Ukrainian in western ukraine and the people that still call themselves Rusyny.
When I look at the mountains and the people and the wooden buildings, I feel a deep connection.
I don't believe that youcan revise languages. For example look at the Hebrew language, it's been revised even though it was considered dead for almost 100 years, now it's national language of Israel.
You can revise a language if there are 100,000 or only 10,000 speakers left. The longer the Rusyns are held hostage the more likely it become their culture and language will die out.

In Odessa and Kiev people speak Russian, but Russian language is not official. Are Ukrainian elites crazy?
leostomicek 1 year ago
@leostomicek Russian language will be official if not it will be at least regional. This problem under discussion. Nobody forbids Russyns speak at native language or identify self like they want to. I'm ukrainian speaker person and not againts Russian second official language. But you are right our elite is crazy they manipulate this problem on each elections. It's like a Joker and Yanukovich is a president right now 'cause he had promise to make Russian lang as official.
witdex 1 year ago
@witdex I guess 'will be' is the official Ukrainian ideology, no matter if it is Kuchma, Yushchenko or Yanukovych who is the president. The problem of regional differences, ethnic, linguistic and in terms of historical experience in Ukraine are real and there needs to be acknowledgement of this fact. In 1991 78,2% of people of Transcarpathia voted for autonomy within Ukraine.
leostomicek 1 year ago
@witdex The 1991 referendum in Transcarpathia was initiated by local Rusyn organisation. The Rusyns can use their language but not on official level. Anyway, Ukraine I think would benefit from federalisation and decentralisation, it works in the West. It would not only help quell regional cultural demands but would also help the economy. I heard that the governors of regions are appointed by the president. I can only imagine how much corruption that must breed.

why does Lukianov speak russian and not rusyn? i smell a provocation
casperado666 1 year ago
I would like Ukrainians who deny Rusyns as a separate nationality to solve a simple problem.
I am Lemko and consider myself Rusyn. I do not identify with the Ukrainian national ethos, I don't treat Ukrainian culture and language as my own culture and language. Ukrainian national symbols, the history of Ukraine, Ukrainian songs do not evoke any patriotic emotions in my soul.
Do you still claim that I am a member of your Ukrainian nation?
ka82yetan 1 year ago
@ka82yetan Who deny you identify self what you want? I'm a half polish a half ukrainian. Same things I feel with polish symbols that you feel to ukrainian - nothing. I identify myself as ukrainian, but i have unlike traits with people for example who live in Zaporizha, because I live at Volyn. So what? Now I can say "Give me autonomy"? No, every region have own culture, and if people live in big country, I think it's better than split it and live in small villages like Slovakia, Chernogoria..

Could anybody tell what is a real national orientation of people living in the Subcarpathian region?
ka82yetan 1 year ago
@ka82yetan on cencus 2001 in Subcarpathian region lives Ukrainians 80.5%. Hungarians 12.1 % Romanians 2.6%. Russians 2.5% Gypsies1.1% and Rusyn — 0.5% only 11.000 people identified themselves as rusyns!
williamus26 1 year ago 3
@williamus26 Well, it is strange that 11,000 Rusyns were found, since they are considered to be Ukrainians anyway by the Ukrainian government. There is no Rusyn on the census menu, and the authorities might count them as Ukrainians, since that is the official ideology. When you look across the border to Slovakia, there suddenly appeared a lot of Rusyns since the Slovaks repudiated the Soviet ideology. That said, why is Fr. Sidor tried for separatism if the Rusyns are so irrelevant?
leostomicek 1 year ago
@williamus26 Anyway 11,000 is enough to have your linguistic and cultural rights acknowledged.

dude, or woman, of course Ukrainian is an ethnicity but it is also a nationality where ethnic Ukrainians are majority but other groups of people live there like Tatars for example. they are still Ukrainian even though they are Turkic Tatars. They are just not the ethnic Ukrainian who are Slavic. but they are still citizens of Ukraine. same as ethnic Russians vs. citizens who may live there like Uzbeks,Tatars, Kazakhs, etc. or at one time prior to 1940s,not all Polish people were ethnic Poles

you want a country of your own? then separate church from state - sooner, better. you are locked in past too much - awaken ♫
walaxski 2 years ago
Maybe I'm wrong, but I think most people don't care about separating, they just want to be recognized like they are in all the other surrounding countries.
chefc 2 years ago
chefc buddy, i'm 100% for recognition and self-governance but they have to grow up. right now all politics over there is run by church officials or their kids, kapish?
walaxski 2 years ago
I don't disagree with you on Sidor's group, but as I understand it, the World Congress of Rusyns (as opposed to the WRC) is made up of a broader group of intellectuals, educators, etc. from all countries and I think represent the majority, and only ask for recognition to grow the culture, not an independent state.
chefc 2 years ago
well, ea. group (as it stands right now) would not be able to survive w/o church support.

As long as something is being done to cultivate a Rusyn Culture, it's a step forward.
chefc 2 years ago

Slannet 2 years ago

In America when the Slavs came in droves 1880-1920's there was much controversy against them, especially from Irish Catholics, who did not like their married Priests, even tho they were Byzantine Catholics.
novokarpati 2 years ago
true, as an American of Slovak and Rus decent I have heard stories of how the Slavs were poorly treated in America when they first came. A good book that describes some of the situations is called "Out of this Furnace" which is based in the town of Braddock in Pittsburgh "where I and many Slovaks and Rus still live". It is ironic how now I am considered white when my ancestors when they came here were considered "below white"....

This is evidence of a different culture, if not, genetic ethnicity.
novokarpati 2 years ago
It's just a slightly different dialect.
When I look at the mountains and the people and the wooden buildings, I feel a deep connection.
glazedhoneybunz 2 years ago
Many western Ukrainians that don't live in the mountains are Boikos. They just don't really call themselves that anymore.
glazedhoneybunz 2 years ago
I don't believe that youcan revise languages. For example look at the Hebrew language, it's been revised even though it was considered dead for almost 100 years, now it's national language of Israel.
You can revise a language if there are 100,000 or only 10,000 speakers left. The longer the Rusyns are held hostage the more likely it become their culture and language will die out.
