It reminds me of useing a wacom tablet. I really wouldnt have a problem useing it. its really neat. I may use it here soon. It should help me with drawing gesture drawings and so on. To get the feel and block things out then try drawing them without it. <3 thank you so much.
@Roytheartist A camera lucida is generally used to get a quick accurate drawing from life, so you can paint it from observation. Why would you use it for photos? Just print the photo and trace it? I suppose I see the use of this Simmtrace, perhaps this saves a little bit of time and printer paper. But if the angle of the camera isn't 100% correct, the drawing will be distorted. Same is true of a real camera lucida though, I suppose.
Fascinating. I need this. With opaque tracers you first have to print off a photo which results in losing detail and altering colors. It seems to me that by changing the angle of the webcam, you could also produce some interesting effects. Simple, but brilliant.
Do I just buy the Camera and wooden holder and plug them into a lap Top? If I trace the Image upside down (like in the book "drawing on the roght side of the brain" will I get a better looking drawing?
Let me make sure I understood well, you invented this modern tool? I know a camera lucida was invented before but it works with a mirror at a certain angle, I just never heard of this kind of camera lucida before...
Yes, I invented the idea. It is quite simple, but works very well. I have recently been using it for painting accurate watercolors without drawing first,
is it projecting an image on paper or you looking at it from an angel like small peap holes with a diagonal mirrror with glass. its very dim the pencil can barely see what im doing
It is not projecting at all. You look at the computer screen and see your pencil, via the webcam. You also see the photo you are copying, and can adjust transparency, so it is perfectly clear.
Good concept. I use photoshop to enlarge a picture to the size I want it then print it out onto how ever many sheets of A4 paper I need to make the size I want but this idea is very good. You could still use photoshop or Paint Shop pro to do what you've done here.
Thanks for your comment, You can use this method for any size, simply point webcam at the surface you want to draw on, then as long as your computer screen is easily viewable you are ok! You can even do a mural like this!
That is cool. I wanted to use something like that to create a high contrast painting of the sun reflecting off Bellingham bay with the shadowed outline of a fisherman checking his net.
Wow what an idea! You Sir are a genius! Thank You.

Just print the damn picture and color that. I rather have a real camera lucida to paint something real and not pictures on my computer.

That's clever. It could also go by the name, 'Web-camera Lucida'. =)
