also, you have a lot of space around your tomatoes. this could be used for lettuce in the short term, some of which will last thru summer in the shade of the toms.
great vid. makes me jealous being in tn. and have to wait 'till may to plant tomatoes. great analysis of carrot's stoutness. a suggestion - it looks like the native soil is pretty sandy, great for carrots and other root crops like potatoes and onion. however, a deep tillage is necessary. this isn't a big deal. just take a shovel, or pitchfork if it works, and spear the ground deeply enough to get a few inches into the native soil, pull the shovel (or pitchfork) and pull back. more next
You are totally gloating about this. Good for you. With the mild winter we have had up north so far, I am worried our snow and cold will come late and last through May. I hope not. Another way to do carrots in a small area is to scatter the seeds in a square. Just kind of rake them into the soil. You end up with a lot more for your space.
Garden in January is a dream for garden dorks like me! You did the carrots right, just spread them around and thin later. You are also right about tilling or just getting the soil loose, this will also help the carrots stay straight and not split. Remember since you are using boxes they will need more nutrients and water, make that mistake myself. Good job!
Great Idea. How about this weather. It is 63 in Jersey today..Crazy. I am hoping we don't have a late winter. I will be starting my seeds inside in about 2 weeks. Thanks for the video. Good luck. Be Safe Brother
Hahahaha, "a real bad frost". Bahahahahaha Wait, sorry for that! lol Keep up the good work man. The garden will pay off eventually and you will really enjoy the results. Peace out from the Great White North!
UM,all the replays, keep up the good work im tryn to look at good weather here as well. You could get lucky and im hopeing to as well.Ben there and done it,Best wishes,Richard
LOL @ the retarded carrots. You definitely want to go through & thin your carrots, I also learned this the hard way with my first garden. I wanted to save everything, but it actually chokes the healthy plants out.
Regarding your onions, I would bet you planted vidalia onions. They are sweet onions. A little different than your standard onion, but still delicious.
Thansk for sharing your garden, and yes, I am jealous. : )
@houndsman03 yes brother, and he had to rub it in on ya...lol he's on the right track now with the carrots. I always mix 1/3 sand with the dirt which keeps it loose for the carrots. Nice freedom... way to get a jump on all of us.
Three more months before we can start planting. Nice job brother, enjoy. At least you selected the "best" state for the onions! Unfortunatley, the Georgia onions grew like crap here for me...yep..in Ga!
I'm jealous I won't be growing anything for at least a couple of months, have you considered building some type of shade net you could put up during the real hot days? just a thought .
We lost a few of our tomatoes from that frost. We managed to cover them with blankets and a lot of our tomatoes did survive. Last year our tomatoes got baked as well, so we're planting early to avoid the baking sun. Looks good!!!
I live in Indiana. I've gardened and dealt w/frost my whole life. If there is a frost warning, just go out that evening and cover up your plants with about anything. I've used buckets, milk jugs with the bottoms cut out or throw a sheet of vis-queen over your whole bed and take em off in the morning. Should take care of any frost problems you have. Thanks for the videos!
That's cool Freedom! Our thumbs don't start turning green until April or May...Our garden goes in around Mother's Day... The only thing we plant early is snow peas. But our soil is soooo fertile here and we grow soooo much food that by August I am canning like a mad woman! I can't imagine what I could produce if I could plant this early! Good luck and may you grow a bounty this year!
Its amazing what you can learn in just one growing season. If people haven't started learning this skill, get going. Looks great Bro, did you hire a cabinetmaker to build those boxes?-)
my trial and error story...planted melon varieties near my other vegetables and it affected the sweet flavor of the melons...could have just been my garden but wanted to save you the work if you had heard that from any other source..I also have raised beds.
good start on your garden. I live in vegas so I know what hot is. I plant my veggies in waves to miss some heat. my 4th of july tomato plant ( 49 days to harvest ) did really well in july and august..100 degrees for 40 days straight
my carrots were stubby too.. but, oh so good... I think you are right about loosening the soil. I also hear viagra will help.. hahaha.. just kidding. next time I grow carrots Im going to really loosen the soil down deep..
nice... only good thing about living in Southeast Calif is the weather.. :) I garden all year around.. rarely VERY rarely do we get frost... Good looking garden my man...
this can be done thru your raised beds.

If you drag 4 fingers in the dirt instead of one, you can spread the seed out and get more carrots with less thinning. (wide bed type)
