I read somewhere this episode was not shown when Spiderman was on ABC in the 1960s, but only after it went into syndication. Network execs thought it was too scary for little kids. I have to admit when I first saw it (I was 10) I thought it was a little freaky.

@Stanfan11 Where did you get that idea? There are countless examples of Spiderman in space. Too many to mention. Perhaps the most significant one was during the Secret Wars series that was published in 1983-84 where Spiderman first encounters his black Alien costume which later became Venom. But remember this story wasnt necessarily taking place in space but in another dimension. Spiderman never moved, remember? It was all an evil illusion. Also remember that most of the cartoons were(contabove)

However Stan Lee,before this series was created was well in support of the idea that the Marvel teams be aware of what was going on in the present times as well as paying close attention to what youth were wearing,listening to etc. These funky psychedelic back drops and far out mystical scenes could be veiwed as simply marketing. We must also remember that certain artist & writers were already on the wavelength drugs or not. chuckle
