I can't do Cabrel justice but, here, with poetic license, is my translation/interpretation: If we were all wonderful, perfect humble singers against all kinds of injustices, but being people, but we're selfish, it's everyone to his own. We could write eternal songs and in just a few lines we could make a better world, but we just write everyday songs... (to be continued...)
