I travel back and forth between my homes in both Shanghai and U.S. Here is my fair judgement of pollution in Shanghai: the air and water quality in Shanghai is fair to good but definately not as good as U.S. cities, you will see less days with blue sky and streets are clean with no garbages but a little dusty in some areas. Shanghai is by no means dirty and polluted, and is far more cleaner than Indian cities such as Mumbai (one American co-worker in Shanghai who has been to India told me).

Shiryuuclone. I have lived in Shanghai for nearly a year. Not once could I NOT look directly at the sun. The smog was there everyday. In winter. No rain for say 3-4 days. Cold as. Pollution exactly the same. Summer hot and humid. pollution the same The water of the Huang pu and all the connected canals is a milky gray. The streets are a mess. Its weird how when they build they just leave all the unwanted materials/rubbish everywhere. but you get used to it.

I've read that if you're an overseas Chinese and if you go to Shanghai, they'll all look at you like sh*t. But try and speak to them in ENGLISH and all of a sudden their attitude towards you will change magically; now they'll all be eager to talk to you and learn English from you.

It think its a beautiful world class city and the safest I've ever been.They have the best architectural character and architecture types the world has to offer.Public Transportation is very convenient. I have heard of some idiotic comments that shanghai is polluted, dirty,ugly and all that but I beg to disagree. I think the chinese govt. is doing a great job with Shanghai.
Hmmm shocked by the title of this vid. I think Shanghai is a very nice city and the waterfront skyline is amazing. YOu have to understand China is still under the first trimester of their Industrial revolution, therefore there is lots of pollution. England Germany and the US was much of the same way in the late 1800's with pollution from coal burning factories. This will all change soon. China is already has the world's largest solar power system and wind farms.

Im from the Republic of the Philippines and i went to Shanghai last summer for a short 2 week vacation and with the short span of time that i stayed there i can say that this is one of the most beautiful and cleanest city in the World compare to other cities and they have lots of beautiful parks. With the 18 million pop they can still maintain a clean environment. :)

Um, Shanghai has some ugly buildings but it also has a lot of beautiful modern and 18th/early 19th century architecture. Plus, it may be polluted but its nothing compared to Beijing, most of China's industrial cities or other cities in Asia like Mumbai.

Shiryuuclone. I have lived in Shanghai for nearly a year. Not once could I NOT look directly at the sun. The smog was there everyday. In winter. No rain for say 3-4 days. Cold as. Pollution exactly the same. Summer hot and humid. pollution the same The water of the Huang pu and all the connected canals is a milky gray. The streets are a mess. Its weird how when they build they just leave all the unwanted materials/rubbish everywhere. but you get used to it.

Have you ever been in Milan, Rome, Manhattan?? Shanghai is much cleaner. Streets, metro stations and trains are extremely clean compared to New York subway... I'm from Italy and I wish one day italian cities will be as clean as Shanghai. In my view the real problem of Shanghai is traffic and the way chinese people drive....

while some footage might be misleading it is still true that shanghai is a dirthole, been there and i should of brought a mask with me as in some places you truly cant see beyond a couple of meters range and you have a tough time breathing, those who state different things are probably calling shanghai clean as compared to linfen :D or they are just on the communist central party`s payroll :D

Never been to Shanghai, but NYC seems pretty filth ridden to me. Rats outnumber the people 100000 to 1 and the water is pure sewage that would kill a human in 5 seconds. They really need to clean some of these American cities, we need to start adopting alternate forms of energy and stop polluting the planet while were at it.

Its true i went there several years ago and i couldn't even see the sky. You will smell something if you go there. Also water is kinda polluted, it has much cleaning stuff in it you feel when you take a shower. I expected so many good thing but i really disappointed about Shanghai and China. Just be careful because you may get some allergy or some disease from there. Its really polluted. Beijing is really stinky LOL. You should wear a mask. Sorry Chinese people but its true.

I just came back from Shanghai, and it's perhaps the most beautiful city I've been to, & I've been to all over the United States and Canada, as well as Europe..so yes, I think I have enough points of reference... About the pollution, all big cities have it. At least Shanghai doesn't have ugly graffiti like in L.A. or trash on the streets like in New York. Classifying it as the ugliest city just shows how much arogance this yank has...

I'm from the Philippines as well and have lived in shanghai for almost 5 years. It think its a beautiful world class city and the safest I've ever been.They have the best architectural character and architecture types the world has to offer.Public Transportation is very convenient. I have heard of some idiotic comments that shanghai is polluted, dirty,ugly and all that but I beg to disagree. I think the chinese govt. is doing a great job with Shanghai.

Hmmm shocked by the title of this vid. I think Shanghai is a very nice city and the waterfront skyline is amazing. YOu have to understand China is still under the first trimester of their Industrial revolution, therefore there is lots of pollution. England Germany and the US was much of the same way in the late 1800's with pollution from coal burning factories. This will all change soon. China is already has the world's largest solar power system and wind farms.

Im from the Republic of the Philippines and i went to Shanghai last summer for a short 2 week vacation and with the short span of time that i stayed there i can say that this is one of the most beautiful and cleanest city in the World compare to other cities and they have lots of beautiful parks. With the 18 million pop they can still maintain a clean environment. :)

WRONG! Shanghai is one of the best cities in the world! I lived there for three years and it was the best three years of my life. AND im from New Zealand which is one of the most pollution free places in the world. Half of the time it isn't smoggy like this anyway, I have seen many a day when there is no smog at all, and i could see the supertowers at the bund all the way from my apartment way west of hongqiao airport

or for that matter fog. You obviously dont understand that shanghai rains on avg once every two days. Its extremely humid and with humidity comes yellow haze which happens once every year usually during summer july time. Also very cloudy. Its not pollution. Polution is like beijing becasue its a steelworks city and actually has production, shanghai is a commercial financial city.

Shanghai is the nicest and most beautiful city i've ever been to, and i'm from Canada which has some nice cities. It's much nicer than Tokyo too (which i've also been to), so much nice modern architecture and so many people. Even this video makes it look incredible! Also, that is fog not smog!

Um, Shanghai has some ugly buildings but it also has a lot of beautiful modern and 18th/early 19th century architecture. Plus, it may be polluted but its nothing compared to Beijing, most of China's industrial cities or other cities in Asia like Mumbai.

you see, shanghai is working diligently to work on their pollution issues. While they are a quite successful country, they have many things to work on. give it time ok? and i personally believe that shanghai is a gorgeous city with abstract and unbelievable architecture, and yeah, i HAVE been there.
