the open cup has been around since like 1912 and major league soccer has only been in existance since 1996 (hence mls cup has only been around that long). the question isnt how long a trophy has existed, but how important it is (to players, fans, teams). i would say mls cup is #1, superliga is #2, champions league is #3 and open cup is #4. the champions league might be higher in the future but since it's in the mls off-season it's less regarded. superliga for the $1m and since it's us vs mexico.

But Superliga means nothing in the grand scheme of FIFA-sanctioned championships. US Open and MLS Cup and Supporters Shield get you to Champions League. Champions League gets you to the FIFA Club Cup where you might play Manchester or Boca Juniors for world recognition. What does Superliga get you? Money and that's it.

Definitely the MLS Cup. Then probably the SuperLiga or Champions League. Then the US Open Cup (this). Fact is, most MLS sides do not even send their best sides and do not play their starters until the semifinals. The Open Cup is definitely a less beloved trophy - although I'm not really sure why. It should be the equivalent of the FA Cup in England but it's just not looked at as such. Maybe one day it will be viewed as a bigger accomplishment and teams will start to take it serious!

Actually, DC United is considered the most successful team in American Soccer, with 12 trophy wins including 4 MLS Cups, 4 Supporter's Shield, 2 US Open Cups, 1 InterAmerican Cup, and 1 CONCACAF Champions Cup. With the best Supporters in the US as well. All that and they have much love for their fans. I love Bobby Boswell who use to play in DCU, so I have no hate towards Houston regardless.

Just came back from the game! My boys...awesome as always! My Barra Brava...awesome as always (I am so proud). DCU deserves this win.  There is NOTHING like actually being there in front of the action. I'm in love with this team! The cup was beautiful!
