  • Amanda Palmer, thank you for throwing Rogers and Hammerstein back in our faces. :)

  • thessie, my mind was also just mulling over this ...

  • ...

I was wondering when something "Amanda Fucking Palmer" was going to happen.

  • Amazing As Always! What a yummi lookin feast :P

  • baked beans, marshmellows and sprinkles is a traditional norgwegian dish, dammit, stop hating'.

  • Amanda Palmer. The only woman who can be classy and eat her abusive husband at the same time.

  • Beautiful video!! And I love the song! :D

Haha, I love the rather morbid ending. :)

  • Is it weird that the part of this video that bothers me most is the baked beans, sprinkles & marshmallows thing they appear to be having as a side dish?

  • Chicks before dicks.

  • He changes the direction he's sat in between shots...

  • baked beans with marshmellows and spinkles seems legit

  • @emoanarchist96 Totally legit, but I'm bothered that they didn't cook the guy.

  • THis would be my best friend emily and I :)

  • Love it!

  • I think that the scariest things on that table are the deserts....

  • Is it bad that this reminds me of Fried Green Tomatoes?

  • @RocktheSocks I thought the same thing lol

  • This breaks the stereotype that women always go for the jerks.

  • Beautiful. Happy ending for all. ^.^

  • Neil Gaiman knows what's gonna happen to him if he ever hits Amanda...

  • Did not see that coming! ... xD

  • Annie reminds me in Audrey Tautou here.

  • Ha! This is great!

  • ummmmmm no...

  • 2:26 they sit down, then BAM a scene later they've changed chairs. Good old musical chairs :D

  • @atmhso Wow I've watched this video so many times and somehow completely missed that. It looks like the video has been flipped because he's the other way round on the table too.

  • is this her actually singing? cause she never sounds like this.

  • @gearpunk It's St. Vincent in the beginning, Amanda later ("something made him the way that he is...")

  • @gearpunk most of the beginning and some of the end is Annie Clark from St Vincent singing. thats why it doesn't sound like Amanda that much. Amanda has a bit more raspier tone, where Annie's is much hgiher and old-fashioned, in a way.

  • Amanda Fucking Palmer, I Fucking love you and I can't wait to see you live in Fucking Glasgow. XX

  • Love it... And I am a man.

  • Ummmm

  • Lovely:) And Greenaway-ish:)

  • eeewwww sprinkles and marshmallows in baked beans!!!!

  • @wordthatswassup I think it might be peanut brittle.

  • I have that SAME bruise! wow..

  • Wonderful ! I love this !

  • i love amanda..so..much..

  • WELL. Watching this video has given me a completely different view on this song. o_o;

  • this is fucked up...I LOVE IT! amanda, you are awesome. i wasn't expecting the last part. well done

  • Haha I just stumbled onto this video. At first I thought these two were lesbians. I guess this is the place where widows and heart broken girls hang out.

  • I wasn't too crazy about this song when I heard it on the album. It sounded to me like it was saying "never question your lover; they're always right." Then I saw this, and it all makes sense. Amanda is so brilliant.

  • At first, I thought this was merely a song about devotion and love, until one day it was cranked up extra loud and I could hear the sobs in the second verse. It was then that the meaning COMPLETELY flipped.

  • @eccentricways I didn't even notice that until you pointed it out!

  • I thought this was such a sweet quiet song, and then I watched this video, and was like, "Holy shit!" I should have known!

  • wow.. i had absolutely no idea this was a duet. its marvelous

  • @xmisogyny agreed i never knew

  • The end makes me laugh. Love this. Also, I want that red dress.

  • This video is hilarious and creepy! Only AFP can do something like this!! XD

  • It's like a mini David Lynch film

  • i like the original from "Carousel," too.

  • She reminds me that I love being a woman.

  • @theroadsofar True, women aren't weak. Just can be really fucking evil. Hooray!

  • I love it! :D <333333333333333333

  • I concur with evilCookie .... She is AWESOME

  • haha that sinister expression at the end <3 she'll always hold a place in my heart since the secret ninja gig x

  • i liked how the yellow jelly wouldnt come out

  • Beautiful song, beautifully performed and a beautiful video too. Or, in a word, beautiful!

  • The ending is absolutely brilliant. Especially Amanda's face.

  • I like my PIG well done that pig loooks to Rare

  • A good friend comforts you when your husband hits you.

A BEST friend helps you kill him and eat him

  • @unusualcutie400

I think they are more than best friends...

  • Knoxville Girl, Where The Wild Roses Grow, The Willow Garden, and Widow's Grove are all songs about men murdering their wives/lovers, with no reason given. And those are just off the top of my head. It's been a pretty popular theme in music/poetry for hundreds of years, often referred to as "the murdered sweetheart" pattern. The nearest contemporary I can think of would be Henry Lee/Loving Henry, telling of a woman murdering a man over unrequited love.

AFP's spin on this song is genius!

  • Oh okay... I /can/ read. Still, Amanda's voice is fabulous and her music is stunning.

  • Her range is fucking insane. Amanda, if you're reading this, I love you.

    A lot.

    *hides in corner*

  • nice

  • for fuck's sake, it's not a satanic message ordering you to go and kill or beat up your lover, it's ART, it's BEAUTIFUL, so shut up and enjoy it. If you can't appreciate it click the little "x" in the upper right corner and begone with ye.

  • 1 . great drag didnt notice till the end.

    2. I hate murder songs. if a man beats his girl freind /w/e it is not worth taking his life. that girl wants to feel empowered she should grab a sledge hammer and wack him good. but it's not worth killing some one. there is some truth to something made him that way. we all have our scars. but we need forgiveness. not hatered and mureder

  • @brudswick You're fucking retarded. Just saying.

  • @brudswick A) Murder songs? B) Good job missing the point :3

  • Coolest fucking thing ever.

  • @brudswick i bet your saying this cause you beat your lover too.

  • @devilbabegirlie actually im single. but the thing of it is I believe in equality and you know there is no song where a guy kills his girlfreind because she keeps beating the shit out of him. it wouldn't fly. I just am not a fan of sexism, and murder is never the answer. never. no matter what. peace on earth. good will towards men.

peope would call murderers like dommer monsters and then turn around and support something like this. its dispicable to think there are exceptions. dont pass judgmt

  • @brudswick Actually, there's just a bunch of songs about guys killing their girlfriends for "lesser offenses." If you're looking for a song that actually has f on m revenge for abuse in the lyrics you'd go to country, for "Goodbye Earl" and "Independence Day." This is not the song.

THIS song is from an old musical, 'Carousel' - a musical that has lines like "sometimes when a man hits you... really hard, it feels like a kiss." The video has that retrograde context and perspective in mind.

  • I just adore this. Also, I want some fucking jello.

  • BRILLIANT.

  • There should be a love button for songs like this... :)

  • wow and all the aholes out there wonder why some women do not want anything to do with them. The other video of this song is nice too....love the victorian setting!

  • @TurtleThunder73 ....

    Victorian? Really?

    :/

Don't post unless you actually are correct in your praise.

  • Ah, Amanda.

You never fail to succeed, no matter what kind of music you create.

I think she could rap and get away with it.

    I'd probably listen to it.

    <3

  • Love it

  • Comment removed

  • @roxslide I dont think it is man...

  • what means won'drin? ):

  • da best,

  • theyre tired of sugar coating everything. i mean, even the baked beans were covered in sprinkles...

  • now this is art

  • And I thought the Bernadette Peters version was good....god the ending was fucked up, but I love it!

  • pretty good.

  • Beautiful vocals.

    Amanda, dear! I love you!

  • This is ugly and heartbreaking and beautiful. I fucking adore her.

  • creepy....

  • No, they don't have to kiss, and they love each other true but there is no saying what kind of love...they could have been sisters, friends, lovers....who knows?

  • I wish more artists were this creative. What a fucking amazing video! Amanda and the other girl are both GORGEOUS!

  • she stole this from the dixie chicks

  • @zdorn who stole it from rogers and hammerstein...

  • @princealixfever It's called a cover

  • Amanda's expression at 1:13 made me tear up.

More-thumbs-than-I-own up for the sheer brilliance of this video/song :)

  • I kept waiting for them to kiss...it never happened. I can't figure out why I am so confused.

  • @NACLM They clearly love each other, do they have to kiss?

  • Thank you! You are just amazing! I'm so glad my daughter introduced me to your music!

  • oh my lol wow she killed that bitch lol

  • I think it's interesting that the song is from the victims perspective and how she is trying to justify the abusers actions. From the song we get the impression that the victim continues life with the abuser, however I quite like this alternative ending where the victim has had enough!

Great video I wasn't expecting it to end like that!

  • Genius.

  • LOL the ending is so sick!! XD

  • You're so amazing in every single way.

  • Does anyone know why Annie wasn't in this video? I've had an itch to know. Amanda ever-so-briefly mentioned that things "began to get weird" and it didn't work out. (I wonder if Annie felt uncomfortable with the content of the video).

  • I thought this would be a serious and sad song, but the ending was just LOL XD

  • Oh I love it ^^.So nice .Not only the story but also the way it was brought up , the dresses the hair ...:D!

  • this is so fucking beautiful. simple AND beautiful.

  • Wicked :)

  • I'm confused by the ending. Obviously I understand WHY that woman would want revenge. But this is a subversive version of a song about why you should stay with an abuser. The theme of this version is , "Let's reveal the ugly message these lyrics send."

I'd expect the sort of ending where SHE gets killed, to show how women with that mindset often end up. Instead we're told, "Just kidding, she didn't mean any of it," which (while satisfying) takes away so much of the power of the rest of it.

  • @fidelio1980 To me, she sounds sarcastic, like she's making fun of that viewpoint.

  • @emiko4eva wow, that makes sense. hmm..

  • In response to the explanation of where the song came from (it was posted a few pages back) - in Carousel, the song isn't sung by the friends of an abuse victim, to convince her to stay with her abuser. It's sung by the victim herself, to explain to her friends why she feels the need to stay with the abuser. It's creepy either way, to be sure - but it's probably even creepier with the victim singing it herself.

  • such a sweet creepy song :)

  • I was reading how this version "changed the meaning of the song to being about an abusive relationship." Thing is, the original was too. In Carousel, the guy IS an abusive jerk. He only gets redeemed in the afterlife, and he STILL hits his daughter!

  • omg. lol. never seen this video. love it. :P

  • @MasonJar13 Well, the thing is, it's not always that she's trying to be shocking. A lot of it is at least semi-autobiographical. "Half Jack" is apparently about her father, who left when she was a child. I've heard people claim that her treatment of rape in "Oasis" isn't to make fun of it, but her way of dealing with her rape. I could be wrong; I've not seen any official sources, so don't quote me on it.

  • @SiofraMorrigan Considering the provenance of this song, & the images she employs-I don't think you can argue she isn't attempting some kind of subversion, if not shock. Yes, this obviously comes from a personal place in her life (no doubt, given the narcissistic bent to her body of work). But again, the symbols she chooses are contrived & the work so didactic that it never reaches beyond itself into some greater relevancy. Which is unfortunate given that she does posses talent & charisma.

  • @MasonJar13

Contrived? Examine the beam in your own eye, my good sir, before contriving to pluck the mote from hers. If you check the dictionary under contrived, it reads "referring to a popular music video as 'work so didactic' "

No, it's not obvious that this comes from a personal place in her life. Statistically likely yes, obvious no.

  • THAT WAS TEH BEST VIDEO EVER

  • Wow, this song almost makes me cry when I hear it on the album... Then I come watch this, makes me feel much better. Laughter is the best medicine!

  • wow i thought i was going to cry when i saw that bruise.... even though it's fake!

  • Amanda Palmer + St. Vincent = AMAZING

  • I thought the other woman was Audrey Tautou for a second.

  • @Curtis006 So did I! Glad I'm not the only one, lol.

  • AFP!!

Best vid so far, along with shores of california and coin-operated boy; but THIS is a masterpiece of sarcasm.

It's in my head though.. it's been stuck there for a few days -_-

  • I love it all the same.

  • are you serious

  • lol i know ive already said this about an amanda palmer video but this is pretty fucked up right here!

  • The apple in the mouth just completes the whole thing. Bra fucking vo.

  • amazing :)

  • I like that she has someone to confide in.

  • I swear.... Amanda Palmer is my hero. Lol

  • Love it.

    5/5

  • 2.24 LOL he deserves it

  • this really hits home for me.

  • This video made me cry. It's completely and utterly unusual, but it works. It's extremely emotional and touching, but not in an in-your-face way.

I just love how Amanda can take sensitive subjects, like rape and domestic abuse, and really make you realize how fucked up the world is, yet at the same time keeps a big smile on her face. It's really creepy... but amazing and thought-provoking.

  • Nice cutlery! *lol*

  • Amanda Palmer says:

    TOWAAAAANDA!

  • I am in love!

  • i wanna dress like them...i need their hair

  • @lacournita omg me too lol i cut my hair short-ish after having it waist lenght thinking of these hairstyles <3

  • I wanna eat baked beans with sprinkles and marshmallows now.

  • I love this song :)

It always reminds me of Vera Lynn for some reason :P

  • Hahahahahaha, Awesome xD

  • I watched the making of this video live but forgot to watch the actual thing until now!

  • @CannibAlice

Can you link me please? I would love to watch that!

  • I love this video so so very much!

  • teehee XP

  • The last scene with the husband served up on the table I think pays homage to the 1980's indie movie "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover" in the last scene where Helen Mirren avenges her lover's murder by forcing her abusive husband to eat him. Maybe this is Amanda's creative spin on it.

  • Amanda Palmer made this song tolerable for me. I loathed the original (or anyone else's) since I first heard it but I can listen to her version over and over.

  • I love Amanda's facial expression at 2:44.

Oh, and the entirity of this video.

  • what is this song about?

i know its a stupid qestion but i really want t oknow for sure

  • @ Zstillwagon -

The original song, "What's the Use of Wond'rin'," is from an American musical called Carousel. One of the main characters is being abused by her boyfriend - who is, incidentally, involved in a highly illegal scheme. When she finds out, she wants to leave him; but her friends sing this song to her, convincing her not to go because "good wives and girlfriends never leave, no matter what."

AFP is playing off that, though the ending gives the song a note of female empowerment.

  • thank you very much.
