Sorry, but I don't agree with your statement of singing on A vowel as all old generation great maestros who educated the most famous singers in the world were advising to use A vowel, which is the best one and I have tried it and it works great if one knows how to use it.
Wow, to hear him come out and say that he just lets her (and his other students, from my experiences with these videos) "do their own thing," is appaling. These are students, and they are studying for a reason. Even if these are upper level (27-30 year old singers), they need to go over technique profusely so they can get jobs/maintain longevity. What are these kids paying this school for? And every GOOD teacher needs to have a concept of good technique, which this one apparently lacks.
i have to agree with everyone critisizing about the representing of the country, and the teacher is very low-leveled in teaching (if I may be so critical). the girl's got a great voice, but the teacher 'does' need to "micro-mange" most of her singing especially in this kinda aria where if u sing it with a great deal of skill, it will sound good, but on the other hand, if u don't sing it with a great deal of skill, it would hurt people's ears
She needs a better Maestro (a real Maestro).. Lyrical singing it is more than voice, it's melodramatic culture, is a face, eyes, and hands expression,...
i know FOR SURE it is from the technical problems with recording device and microphone. she has an amazingly beautiful, creamy, soft, warm and very even voice from low to top range. if you hear her in theatre, you will be showered with the beautiful of her voice!!!!
Well, in response to what you all have commented...I had the rare privilidge of hearing Sang Eun Lee in my home town this past year as the maid in Cosi Fan Tutte...she now has a vocal range of over 3 octaves and she is one of the top internationally acclaimed lyric coloratura opera singers in the world. So...next time you get a chance to hear her, please do so. She'll knock your socks off. Music lessons pay off. :)
And if he's such a great teacher he should know that this poor girl will have no voice in a couple of years if she keeps straining notes that she cant support.
I wouldn't call this a total mess, but I don't find her voice well suited to this aria at all. She doesn't seem to have the vocal weight for it. Unlike Sumi Jo, her voice doesn't have the "edge" to make up for the lack of vocal weight. She'd be better at Pamina's music, I think. If she wants to sing Mozart with high notes, she should try concert arias K. 418 & K. 419, both of which call for high Ds and Es. Her coloratura doesn't sound that amazing, though; K.419 might be too much for her.
what a disaster. this girl should not be singing this aria. These teachers do not know how to teach voice at these conservatories. SLS is the way to go!!!

Nice screeching....I would say this aria is not right for her...I'm sure her voice is really lovely on lighter lyric arias but this is a mess.
