how long did it take you to make your Byrnie/hauberk. ive started making my 'barrel' for my chest and i was just wondering how long it took you to make yours.
If say i wanted to do chainmail for halloween, what materiel would be better to replace metal yet get the texture and stuff and then to spray paint it metallic color.
@leeknivek yeah but, zombies are not ordinary people...have you seen them breaking bones, eating through cranium, taking guts out of live people, and other shit XD
@TheVatrogasacMirko very true, but they're still limited to what their bodies can physically do, for the mostpart. some chainmaille is SHARKproof. i think if you were to get some decently constructed aluminum maille, you'd be alllllll set. light weight but still has more than enough strength to withstand being bitten.
@TheVatrogasacMirko heavy chain mail made by the right person could protect against arrows, spears, and swords. They use chain mail against shark attacks. In short, a zombie tooth most likely won't penetrate chain mail.
@tynytian That depends on the aspect ratio of the rings. Remember, the metal they used back then was several times weaker than modern steel. A tightly woven maille weave with a good aspect ratio can work just as well as rivetted stuff.
I don't clean them or anything. Really they look pretty dingy IRL maillers usually keep their armor shiny by just wearing it often, as maille polishes itself when it moves. I'd suggest wearing it around the house.
@Camronas another thing you can do is to fill a 5 gal bucket with fine sand and put the maille in, put a lid on it, and then roll it around for a while.
Currently in the process of making a hauberk this time, i mad a long sleeve chain shirt with the mistake of the sleeves running the wrong way , which made it look like a chain straight jacket... ty this clears up my dilema from the first time around :)
Great video,i thought i was doing the wrong pattern on the shoulders but i figured out it was right thanks to your video..this just takes a loooong time :D
Dude this helps a lot. I am doing a 1-in-6 right now and I am trying to figure out how to do the 90° turn for the sleeves. Its very confusing, tried it with 45°seems, but that makes me lift the entire hauberk everytime I lift my arm, so that sucks. Do you have an idea how to handle this?
When doing a 90degree angle joint in 6-1, loop three rings of the horizontal pattern through one ring on the vertical pattern, like I did in the video with 4-1. Instead of 2 through one, so 3 through one instead. That should do the trick.
can you please tell me what pattern this is? Im going to start my first chainmaille and i want to do exactly what you have. BTW your the best like tutorial dude out there. All the other ones suck!
@blake7513 The pattern, I guess, would be a chainmaille hauberk. If you mean the weave, it's called European 4-in-1. It's the basic, beginners pattern that's used most often. thx for the complement btw I try my best! ^_^
well, thank you very much. I'm actually thinking about doing some other stuff in my videos besides just tutorials. Doesn't mean I'll stop, but if you have a request I can make a video to help.
do you have any subductions in your suit? and i think having a carried on sideways pattern on the sleeves for a t-shirt sized sleves are historically correct, probably not for a hauberk
No direct questions, just a little remark to let you know I'm starting to be a really big fan of your tutorials here! Many thanks and keep up the good work!
How long did it take you to get that far into your hauberk? I've been wanting to make some kind of chainmail shirt, but I don't know if it would require all my time or not.
I'd say just to take a few rows out of the side. U shouldn't really need any expansions/contractions for the torso part. I saw from ur video at the candy store what u were saying about the sides hanging down.
MAN YOUR VIDEOS ARE GREAT!!! The one on the arms is great but this one is very very helpful! 1 question though, when i attached my side, i think i either made it too big, or i didn't do some kind of contraction/expansion or whatever.

Justinian43 4 months ago
@Justinian43 I'd say simply to use aluminum wire. I think you might be able to order plastic maille kits online, but don't quote me on that.
tynytian 4 months ago
Did you use stainless steel? Or galvanized metal?
TheDomtar 4 months ago
i made one a year ago and the sleeves are very confusing i figured out the arm pit but i couldnt remember how to do it for the second sleev

can this protect from a zombie bite?
TheVatrogasacMirko 1 year ago
@TheVatrogasacMirko what person do you know can bite through steel? i researched the same thing a few months ago: no, it's pretty near zombieproof ;)

@Thrawn6211 you must take into account the chainmaille they use for shark bite suits the links are welded shut.

That's a great looking piece my friend!
I'd like to know the specifics on this if you don't mind.
What gauge wire, what diameter rod, and what weave?
Keep up the good work!!

For maille on the arms, the way it hangs doesn't really matter, and never did.

do i need any kind of oil to care it or what ?
shittyfuck 1 year ago
@shittyfuck You can oil it if u want, but I just let it tarnish. IF you wear maille enough it will polish itself, though.
tynytian 1 year ago
@shittyfuck try using galvanized steel its rust resistane
mendor612 1 year ago
@shittyfuck Back then, they would put maile in a sand-filled barrel and roll it down a hill. That cleaned rust off the rings.

man it is FCKing nice ...but in medieval battle they will kill you per 5 second , but very nice

@icewood96 no kidding. Would not take butted maille into battle with me, need to get some rivetted for that.

Most beginners don't get that the sleeve needs to be turned 90 degrees.
