Lovely song from an intimate album that deserves to be better known. The new Elton album The Union with Leon Russell may appeal to fans of early Elton more than most his post-70s stuff
Actually it IS a harpsichord and its actually MY harpsichord. Sits in my living room as I type this. Its an instrument Thomas Goff (a member of the Royal Family) built in 1959 and loaned it to the BBC for the recording we see. To politely correct some inaccuracies from Jazzpiano10.. Yes its a Double Manual instrument, but the disposition is Upper manual 8' and 8'Lute (nazale), Coupler, Lower manual 16', 8',4' 8'Harp. Elton obviously only used the 8' Lute stop in this piece. There!

As growing old, yes that was something here in Belgium with my sister back in 1971 (I was 11 and she 13) together on cassette adore this song : what wonderfull and 10.000 times on vynil listening ! For her it was that one, and for me it's gives me back good memories OK.....Very very good song (classical)Thank you for sharing (Belgium)
elton's voice was superior at this time of his life. he had a magnificent range just listen to "yellow brick road" it a shame they had to play around with his vocal chords.
Man, I don't know how anyone could prefer the live in australia version. Elton was pretty much forced to do that concert...he had growths on his vocal chords that could have ended his career. I much prefer his pre-operation voice...at least he had the option of using his full vocal range, now he's forced to always sing in the lower registers.
I know his voice was shot, but I still like most of what was on LIA...his rough singing added to some of the songs. For example 'Tonight' sounds MUCH more powerful and emotional than the thin dull album version.
I like the way that he sings later on. His voice got better with time. I prefer the "Live in Australia" version over this one much more, except for the Harpsichord, that was coooool.
this is a wonderful love song, I prefer this harpsichord version than the ''live in australia'' version, although it was an amazing album : all of his old classical songs.
yea a clavicord is smaller, has diagonally strung strings, and instead of the strings being picked with a plectrum, there are sticky pads that make sound when the are taken off the string.
@gwuerritto68 oh yeah? then what is it? its a dual manual harpsichord with 8' and 4' strings. Foot, by the way refers to the octave not the actual length.
Look it up sometime, before you post something, rather rudely, in an area that you're clearly ignorant.
Bernie and Elton... great team. Love the use of the harpsicord in this. I love this album in general.

This is not a clavichord - it is a harpsichord by Thomas Goff and Joseph Cobby.

Yes, it is a harpsichord. You should find it cited on the inside sleeve of the "Elton John" LP, which was first released in 1970.

not quite. the strings are hit by a piece of brass(tangent). no escapement, no springs, just pure touch. Check out clavichords com
