Yes, scientific theory does have to follow a thesis, but alas, science used to occsionally just say "lets see what happens..." The redistribution of melting ice into the oceans will only change the moment-of-inertia enough to shift the rotational axis of the earth slightly due to conservation of angular-momentum; it will not turn West into North.
