  • We passed that area many times, I always told my wife it looked like it was some kind of amusement park. I never knew it really was. A couple of weeks ago we passed it again, nothing but dry grass, no buildings. Very sad. Its amazing to have all these pictures of what once was. Thank you for sharing the memories!

  • Sad ending!

  • total MAGIC

  • I have so many fond memories going to Playland, as a child, in the mid-late 60's. It's sad to see what it is now. How wonderful it would be if things like this could go on forever.

  • Kiddie Park is actually still open just down the street. I thought the hand crank carts were the best too.

  • @jmiller29 I flipped on every turn!! LOL!!!

  • Now my memory is cooked, but was there not a place called Kiddie Land park?

  • What ever happened to the clock at PLAYLAND PARK??? The clock I'm talking about is at the 2:39 Mark. Was it destroyed or was it saved? It was the only intact artifact from the Original Playland Park that wasn't removed from the park

  • the rocket is now in knobels in eylsburg it now called the phoenix i wanna let people now that a coaster in playland is still alive and running at knoebels great ride it was my first coaster

  • That first portion of this video really did bring back some good memories. I remember I would drive my family nuts unless we went there. I remember very well the kid rides and the *big shoe* you'd have to purchase tickets from. I left San Antonio in 78 and just recently returned in 07. Yes, it was a great disappointment to see the park had closed down and has turned to nothing more than a weed trap. But, thanks for the posting of this video, it was great to see the old photos of rides.

  • awsome!!!!!!!!!thank you for this video!!!!!!!!

  • What a waste of a nice Park. I always thought of playland as a bigger & nicer Kiddie Park. It would be nice to have retro park kinda like a coney Island. It was a nice place for the family. I wonder what they are gonna put there? What a waste.

  • A friend and I ate at Sam's burger joint the other day and we had to drive by and take a look at the empty shell of Playland Park. I was born in '66 so a lot of my childhood was spent here and Kiddie Park. I started high school in ' 79 so I can't say I remember the park actually "closing". I just didn't go any more.

Looks like there were a couple different eras of pictures in the slide show. I'd guess mid 50's and early 70's. I kept looking for myself in the background!

  • Thank you so much for these incredible, very well preserved photos of the park in it's prime! I was a Ride O Rama regular and was there practically every weekend. My favorite rides were the Tilt A Whirl, Musik Express, the Fun house & of course my beloved Rocket. I was there for the last day the park was opened in September 1980. I must have rode The Rocket around 15 times that day and was so sad since I had so many wonderful & fun times there.

  • A better soundtrack for the decayed Playland would be the opening theme from the Omega Man. Went here a few times in the late 70s and it was cool to ride the Rocket. So sad that it has been gone for so long now.

  • When my parents took me to Kiddie Park, we would always drive by Playland down the street. For some reason my parent s never took me. When I was old enough I wanted to ride The Rocket. It looked beautiful at night lighted up. I was 10 when the park closed and I never was taken to the park. Today, Knoebels Amusement park in Pennslyvania bought and re-built The Rocket and named it The Phoenix. The Little Miss Muffet statue at 1:27 still exists at the Fredricksburg Rd indoor flea market.

  • @pulgabros Same here. Do you remember the little hand cranked cars that ran on a train track? That was the coolest ride ever designed.

  • Yep, sure do remember them. The"Little Dipper" roller coaster was my favorite ride.

  • I heard some of the kiddie rides were moved to Kiddie Land before it closed. I pass by there every day to work and saw its demise from the pics to you took to today -- they have pratically tore down everything and now nothing but piles of rubble occupy the land. Thanks for taking these pics.

  • Such a sad irony with San Antonio, a city who prides itself on historic preservation, similar was the Hemisfair legacy, which to this day, city officials have neglected a sound urban plan for that 92 acre site. Muy Mal San Antonio....

  • WOW!!! How did you get such great pictures of the park in 2008? That was awsome! My Grandpa' used to take us there....Wow!

  • wow.. what memories!!! what a sad sad shame that it came to this... i grew up going to playland with my brothers and sisters. how sad to see how it remains... if i were rich i would buy it and open it again for a whole new generation of kids. thanks for sharing your pics.

  • WOW!!! thanks so much for this... i was taken there growing up by my parents. yes it is ashamed that it is gone and will never be forgotten by myself. it was such an awesome place and really miss it. thanks for the memories

  • It really is sad to look at.I wonder why people stopped coming to Playland? It is hard to believe that place once had so much life so much happiness there yet it has a very sad errie feeling to it.I wonder if that place is haunted?

  • Thanks for posting the pictures. Brought back a lot of memories. I know my parents/aunt and uncle have old super 8 movies of me and my cousins at the park. It was lots of fun and always clean.

  • it would be awsome if you can some how post those movies on youtube, please let me know if you do, thanks.
