  • Forget the dancers, forget the writhing, forget the soft porn, forget the extreme outfits. A REAL star just needs their voice and perhaps a guitar.

  • Nothing has changed since my dad was an LTC in WWII. He sang this tune when I was a child. The question still remains. When when our government learn!

  • @hobgoodkivett War is necessary.

  • @XxMagician25 who is this idiot? An alien from outer space,I suspect.Even allowing for freedom of thought and speech this person must be inmsane.

  • its crazy to watch a young joan baez and an older joan baez just a click away.she still has that strong spirit. and she is still a beautiful artist and person. she is defiantely an inspiration and she awlays will be to me.

  • Just think how smart we could be if we educated young people to do something positive for the world rather than to fight a and kill 'the enemy.' Take the money wasted on war and educate bright young minds. Our soldiers are being duped that they are doing something good for our country.

  • What a beautiful voice!!

  • Love you Joan <3

    Saskia

  • FANTASTIC .....................

  • This makes me cry. I love you Joan, almost more than my wife. :)

  • Legend!

  • i love this song

  • There are some singers who have such a distinctive voice that the listener knows that they are the person singing without seeing or being told. Joan Baez is one.

  • now thats a singer

  • she looks so elegant

  • Look at her listen to her, she is so beautiful <3

  • Any idea why your video is stretched? I had the same problem with one of mine 2days ago, although it was playing fine on my computer. Anybody knows how to fix that kind of problem? Re this video, I have it in a avi format, it is streched when played on the computer BUT normal when I uploaded it on Youtube weeks ago!! Talk about going nuts! ;-)

  • Toujours pacifiste... depuis... un bail! Très beau! merci!

  • this song sang by Joan makes me cry !!!!

  • whatever she sings is gold. Superb!

  • NO TO OBAMA'S WAR! SELLOUT!

  • Thank you for posting on Obama and his sell out.....why is it so hard to get my fellow progressives to get angry about this!

  • her voice is still so rich full which has stayed with her almost 40 decades later. bless you joan baez for still stirring my emotions after all these years every time i listen to you

  • 40 Decades = 400 years.

Not even Joan is 400+ years old.

MAYBE 250-300. But shirley not 400+

  • Stop this, please ... it's not nice being condescending. YOU know and the rest of us know ... that combatkenpo means 4 decades (WINK!)

  • @MEEUZIKMAN

    lol decades means 10 years

  • @combatkenpo - Not quite 40 decades, but a good long time! Hearing her sing this song still reaches deep into my soul. This song means so much to me, I can't hear enough of it.

  • To dear Joan my salutation!! Thanks for uploading this.

  • her and baby gramps!!

  • you rock joan bayz

  • The war is a product of the desires of the people. On earth the flower would go to where.

  • seems she uses more voice vibrato with age. I don't like this vibrato at all. In the song "The green green grass of home" she uses just the right dose of vibrato. She has a good voice without this vibrato. So: use the voice vibrato in small doses only Ms Baez!

  • It was probably cut short for tv but it doesn't work without the last 2 verses.

  • grazie Joan..

  • Beautiful, as always

  • Beautiful, as always

    Thankyou

  • MERAVIGLIOSA JOAN!!

  • Dear Joan was a front liner. A front liner is one who forced change. Be it at the Democratic convention in Chicago in 68 to Viet Nam protests. I was there.

  • strange that she skipped the two last verses. song doesn't feel right without them. you've got to bring it "full circle" for the real meaning to sink in.

  • strange that she skipped the two last verses. song doesn't feel right without them

  • I believe the last few lyrics didnt exist in the song as pete seeger originally wrote it...at least ive seen it published that way so maybe she was just singing it as pete wrote it

  • very touching and meaningful song. I'm from China and I can tell you this old fart is heard by people all over the world.

  • mraches should be spelt "Moron"

  • Joan Baez is one of the best singers to emerge in the 60's and has continued to perform to this day (2009). She doesn't sound as good today which is understandable given that she is almost 70 years old, but her voice is still excellent in this 1994 performance. If you're not into "folk" music then you may not like her style - different strokes for different folks - but calling her an "old fart" really misses the point. There is no age cutoff after which artists are not allowed to perform.

  • who is this woman who cant even sing in tune?

  • people shouldnt be allowed to put old farts who nobodies ever heard of on you tube.

  • mrarches: Neither should little ignorant fuckers like you be allowed to breath the same air as intelligent people.

    Loser.

  • i wouldnt breath the same air as you .you little twat,id rather suffocate.

  • you should grow to be as amazing an old fart as she is

  • I love Ms Baez and I thing they ment "old fart" as a term of endearment in her case, strange as that sounds.

  • You need a nap.

  • Joan, you're just a good red wine:maturing is always better!

  • She is really great... I prefer the German version though - but that's just my taste...

  • I love this song. Don´t tell anybody about it.(:-)). It is a secret. ;-)You bring on a real meaning to the song here. I need that. Keep on! We will.

  • czapki z głów,

  • What an amazing performance! She's by far my favourite artist.

  • fab fab always a fan Joan

  • One guitar - one voice - now that requires a lot of talent to make a song like this work.

  • @Factnotfictionpeople

OK. Now try Bacharach's even leaner arrangement for Marlene Dietrich, who's not even a singer.

  • Still got vynil of hers from '60's - her voice just gets better through the years xxx

  • Hahaha - i love Joan, but that comment was hilarious.

  • can joan baez smile or does her miserable voice depress even her

  • probably.... lol

  • it happens to be a sad song..silly one

  • it hasppens to be a SAd folk song that has meaning within.

  • oh please...she and her voice and her smile or lack thereof are wonderful.....what would beckon you to be so insensitive?what a snot you must be!!!

  • Joan Baez's song helped me to walk through the boring college years. Thanks. Joan Baez is one of the greatest singers that I admire.

  • simplemente extraordinaria

  • fanchbrezogeg

You dont seem to see the difference with pacifism and communism probably not with pacisifism and militarism eather.

    Beautyful song and good interpreter.

  • music by Pete Seeger (a communist) and words by Mihael SHOLOKOV from his novel "The Silent Don" the official writterman of Soviet Union, heroe of USSR who must destroy Alexandre Soljenitsine and Boris Pasternak. 2 criminal for us because 2 Nobel Prices of Litterature no communists. Seeger is a horrible man; young american people remember Seeger vs Dylan at Newport Festival 1965; a true red facist

  • a communist song by Pete Seeger (music) and Mihail SHOLOKOV (words) from the novel "The Silent Don"- Sholokov was the official writtenman USSR facist director who must destroy Alexandre Soljenitsine. Horrible !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you dont remember that, in USA, poor friends ...

  • wonderful, a beautiful song.

  • Just wonderful! A real Lady of music!!

  • she got a great voice, love this song also.

  • Beautiful Baez!

  • yes

  • was this at the Academy Awards?

  • Joan's voice is so incredibly expressive. The sincerity and simplicity of this song brought tears to my eyes! Thanks Joan!

  • I first heard this song as a child and didn't realize it was an anti-war song until I heard it years later.

Joan's poignant voice does justice to the sentiments of this song. Love it!

  • Beautiful voice and a class act

  • Great song no matter who sings it. Well maybe not George W or Dick Cheney

  • Classic Joan Baez!!!!!!! Luv her............

  • superb!

  • what a fantastic voice! Love the song too!

  • handsome vioce / girl

  • is/was she a Christian?

  • she is. but that dont make difference.FUCK RELIGION !!!

  • Eine sehr gute Antwort...

    FUCK ALL RELIGIONS !!!

  • why sully a page with such obscenities?

Joan, me haces soñar. Te quiero.

  • Joan whom is my heroine in life and Pete my hero, this makes me cry everytime I watch, hear and feel.

What the two of them accomplished in life and still are proves miracles happen....

I am sure they honored one another with her singing his song.....

So moving and her voice, well.....

    she's one of a kind !

I love you both and thank you for everything !

    ~Bella~ xo

  • and if you think this is good, wait til you hear her sing the (original) German version ("Sagt Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind"). It was first sung by Marlene Dietrich during World War II, and translated (losing a certain amount of lyrical beauty) by Pete Seeger. Joan Baez singing this German anti-war song - in the original and exquisite German - it does not get much more breath-taking than this! You can find it by searching on YouTube

    kb.

  • Wonder why Marlene always performed and recorded the Seeger version. What melody did she use in WWII since Seeger hadn't written this one yet? This song (that Seeger wrote) was based on a German poem, but the song had not been written in WWII.

  • You are misinformed. Pete Seeger's inspiration was a Russian poem, not a German folksong. Marlene Dietrich did not record this in WWII, but in 1962, in French and then in German, both translated from Seeger's words. Joan Baez sang the exact same German words that Marlene sang.

  • Magnifique et eternelle Joan Baez

  • I don't find any right words! Joan for ever!!

  • she looks like hilary clinton

  • i love here voice. so so touching. beautiful.

  • The missing lyrics are to be regretted, but that moment when she suddenly went a cappella was quite moving. Her voice is a beautiful and wonderful thing and I've always gotten the sense of a strong heart and deep integrity from her. A great artist.

  • What a great performer.Time has been good to her. This is well worth watching.Thank You

  • Great, but it's missing some stanzas, particularly "Gone to graves every one."

  • The Kennedy Ctr. people probably asked her to sing an abbreviated version of the song. Most KC Honors segments are ten or twelve minutes long for each honoree, usually with half a dozen or so musical acts to fit in, who want to pay tribute, so there isn't a lot of time.

  • I was also thinking that they may have left the verse out because of its morbid aspect.

  • This was a tribute to Seeger, so she sang the verses Seeger wrote. The other two verses were written by someone else.

  • If her hair was dyed to its original color, you could convince me that she's 25. This woman never ages, she is surely an elven maiden :) and her voice just gets better and better!!!

  • Very moving. Joan Baez has such a fine voice

  • wow 4*

  • Like fine wine! Better all the time! AWESOME!!

  • wow 5*

  • Great Joan Baez!!

    thanks joanBaezFan for posting

    thanks D for sharing

    the frenchy

  • There will never be anyone with such a megnificent voice.

  • die frau ist einfach nur klasse

  • I love her.

  • stunning

  • that's exactly the word for it...stunning!!!!

  • Joan should be honored by the Kennedy Center! I've wondered why we have no protest songs for the Iraq War similar to those that helped put an end to the Vietnam War. Where are the poets now? Are they all into rap and greed and gold chains?
