Nothing has changed since my dad was an LTC in WWII. He sang this tune when I was a child. The question still remains. When when our government learn!
its crazy to watch a young joan baez and an older joan baez just a click away.she still has that strong spirit. and she is still a beautiful artist and person. she is defiantely an inspiration and she awlays will be to me.
Just think how smart we could be if we educated young people to do something positive for the world rather than to fight a and kill 'the enemy.' Take the money wasted on war and educate bright young minds. Our soldiers are being duped that they are doing something good for our country.
There are some singers who have such a distinctive voice that the listener knows that they are the person singing without seeing or being told. Joan Baez is one.
Any idea why your video is stretched? I had the same problem with one of mine 2days ago, although it was playing fine on my computer. Anybody knows how to fix that kind of problem? Re this video, I have it in a avi format, it is streched when played on the computer BUT normal when I uploaded it on Youtube weeks ago!! Talk about going nuts! ;-)
her voice is still so rich full which has stayed with her almost 40 decades later. bless you joan baez for still stirring my emotions after all these years every time i listen to you
@combatkenpo - Not quite 40 decades, but a good long time! Hearing her sing this song still reaches deep into my soul. This song means so much to me, I can't hear enough of it.
seems she uses more voice vibrato with age. I don't like this vibrato at all. In the song "The green green grass of home" she uses just the right dose of vibrato. She has a good voice without this vibrato. So: use the voice vibrato in small doses only Ms Baez!
Dear Joan was a front liner. A front liner is one who forced change. Be it at the Democratic convention in Chicago in 68 to Viet Nam protests. I was there.
strange that she skipped the two last verses. song doesn't feel right without them. you've got to bring it "full circle" for the real meaning to sink in.
I believe the last few lyrics didnt exist in the song as pete seeger originally wrote it...at least ive seen it published that way so maybe she was just singing it as pete wrote it
Joan Baez is one of the best singers to emerge in the 60's and has continued to perform to this day (2009). She doesn't sound as good today which is understandable given that she is almost 70 years old, but her voice is still excellent in this 1994 performance. If you're not into "folk" music then you may not like her style - different strokes for different folks - but calling her an "old fart" really misses the point. There is no age cutoff after which artists are not allowed to perform.

The Kennedy Ctr. people probably asked her to sing an abbreviated version of the song. Most KC Honors segments are ten or twelve minutes long for each honoree, usually with half a dozen or so musical acts to fit in, who want to pay tribute, so there isn't a lot of time.
If her hair was dyed to its original color, you could convince me that she's 25. This woman never ages, she is surely an elven maiden :) and her voice just gets better and better!!!
Joan should be honored by the Kennedy Center! I've wondered why we have no protest songs for the Iraq War similar to those that helped put an end to the Vietnam War. Where are the poets now? Are they all into rap and greed and gold chains?

Joan should be honored by the Kennedy Center! I've wondered why we have no protest songs for the Iraq War similar to those that helped put an end to the Vietnam War. Where are the poets now? Are they all into rap and greed and gold chains?
