  • looks like fake Tai Chi to me

  • @KakuAndy I'm curious why you think it looks fake? Any Taiji, Kigong, DMD or any qi based martial arts practitioner who sees this knows that he has a great control and understanding of energy. True energy martial art has no defined form. (i'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just curious to know why you feel that way).

  • @KakuAndy

    I agree.

  • @KakuAndy thats because its not tai chi. its Dahn Mu Do.

  • I really enjoy this demonstration. I feel a beautiful peace and power in his movements. It inspires me to be the best that I can be and to follow my dream no matter what others may say. Thank you.

  • this is such an amazing performance. i feel lucky to have met master owoon. his energy is so powerful and he is so sincere in delivering principles to students.

  • Go to Dahn Yoga.

  • It's so beautiful

  • I don't know what you guys are talking about but Dahn Mu Do is about healing, not fighting... Did that sound too corny? Well, it's true.

  • So why sword instead of fan?

  • not going to waste my time, I had something writing but decided against posing it because I wouldn't want to offend those who do this shit.

  • i see they mixed japanese and chinese art, they are usiing katanas in northern kungfu like form.

  • Once again they didnot mix Japanese nor chinese art together. The problem I have with certain people is the lack of historic information. As if Korea never had their own art? It only seems Japanese Katana to you because of the shape of the sword. It might seem northern kungfu to you, because of your knowledge of Northern Kungfu. Research dahnmudo, its completely different. but to fully understand Korean martial arts and Korean martial ways and styles is by studying the ancient korean history.

  • My question is, the unarmed performance; was it part of the Dahnmudo system? Meaning is it like one of the forms or kata? Or is the whole performance made just for that show, because that first guy was awesome!

  • ever heard of taichi ? if that dahnmudo system is his , he must have incorporated some taichi forms in it .

  • Ahmednabil, dahnmudo is far from Chinese Taichi. Dahnmudo is their own system. It might look like Taichi to you and much of the Western society, however that perspective is only due to the popularity of Chinese and Japanese arts and societies featured through Hollywood and the mainstream media.

  • im not a westerner , and even if its different , and it is , its still similar,i heard that tai chi is derived from korean taekeon.

plus the swird is exactly like the short ninjutsu katana. look if there is similarity between two arts , then they are derived from each other , ninjutsu is derived from numerous arts , so is kyokushin karate , nothing wrong with this.

  • ahmednabi, I apologize for calling you a "westerner", what I meant was non-asian descent. Sorry, forgive me. Taichi is absolutely a chinese art, and there is no historical evidence to say or think taichi is derived from Taekkyon. I understand your ninjutsu and kyokushin ideas and I do agree with you. However the subject is dahnmudo. The earliest of Korean history goes back to the days when the Korean people were occupying and living in all the eastern and northern part of China. Cont.

  • The evidence of Korean people being the first to live in the North and South eastern part of China can be found in one of the oldest chinese text called 山海經 (Koreans call it Sahn Hae Kyoung). I'm sure it is okay to say Ninjutsu sword or Katana sword just to describe the sword however the foundation of any Japanese sword (or metal forging tech, is all techniques acquired through Korean immigrants from long time ago) see watch?v=LUEavf7Ik4w or watch?v=Gcg5BODKcJY. continued.

  • So to go back to the sword, anyone can say it looks like a Katana or Ninjutsu sword, but the origin is Korean. To go back to the original subject of Dahnmudo, it is believed to be derived from one of the earliest philosophy and mindset of the ancient dynasty's mentality. What my ultimate point is Ahmednabil, is that anyone can "say" it looks like this or that, but the claim of being brought from China or Japan, or the claim they borrowed this and that of different arts does not stand. cont.

  • I obviously wrote too much. However to fully understand one must look back in historical instead of making popular conclusions. I do agree with you that certain arts or traditions are derived from one to another because of Trade. However like I said Dahn I believe stands within its own ground. Another video example that is similar looking like taichi but is an art way before Taichi is watch?v=QPBF8TBauCI (2:15min) or watch?v=xRJg_UqAwYI (3:20min). Hope that clears up a bit. Thanks.

  • Actually it does look like a blend of Wu and Cheng Taiji. I wouldn't use that cultural ignorance line on everyone though. Not everyone here is "Western" as you may think. Frankly, Dahn is known to incorporate a lot of Qi Gong from Chinese forms, including the 8 piece brocade, and a few forms of Tibetan origin. Research, like you earlier suggested, is indeed a helpful tool.

  • Taiji maybe before replying to my post you carefully read my post throughly. Yes it does look like it, because your eyes and mind are trained to a certain movements to be a certain origin, however Dahnmudo if you do your research might have that traditional broad asian element, yet still stands alone. Also I've never said EVERYONE HERE IS A WESTERNER... I am a western person myself, but I've studied Far East Asian History, and many martial arts, so I believe I have a say or two about this topic.

  • Then if you studied the history correctly you would know that Chinese fighting arts were the major influence on Korean arts. Look at the Muyedobotongji. These are all based of of Korean military arts that was Chinese influenced.

The items that was done in the beginning was a mix of Wu and Cheng. It is not my western eyes it is just hard facts. The sword was taken from the Muye group in Korea. Oh..btw..I have studied Korean history as well as several arts for the past 28 years.

  • Thank you, sir.

  • When one gets into Shinsundo/ or even Poongryu it is a distinct very ancient religious practices of ancient Korea, I am convinced these religion gave birth to Daoism, including Daoist arts. The statement or question of being a mixture of WU and Chen is not the proper way to look at it. You must say, its comparable to WU and Chen. You guys make it sound like its a bite off of Taiji. Regardless I'm not here to argue, think whatever your please... Thank you sir.

  • I find myself hard-pressed to believe that Daoism came from Shinsundo. There is, however, very clear indication, that elements of these beliefs originally spread from India all the way across east Asia, including to China, Korea, and Japan.

  • I'm convinced Daoism has its roots in Shinsundo, but its a theory of my own based on ancient Korea and their influence within their territory and Far East status. However lets look at Silla dynasty. Choi Chiwon said that before Daoism, Buddhism, Confucianism entered into Silla, they already have a system called Poongryu 風流徒 and he also writes how similar they are to the three religions that came into Silla. Shinsundo is known to have a history from the beginning of Korean culture.

  • This would be an incorrect assumption. Taoism stems from Confuciasism not Buddhism. Buddhism was already part of the Silla kingdom for some time. What time lines is he speaking about when he is mentioning Poongryu?

  • Poongryu explained by Choi in the text called 鸞郎碑序文 explained that before Taoism, Buddhism, and Confuscian entered Silla there was Poongryu. Choi also is noted to teach 天符經 which is a text past down from the beginning of Korean people. That 天符經 is the basis of Shinsundo, so Taoism didnot influence shinsundo, its the other way around.

  • It is not a thing that it looks like a bite...it is a bite. Chen gave birth to Wu taiji. These people are ripping it off and calling it their own. Fine..I have no problem with that. My problem is when they begin claiming 5000 year mystic crap when in fact their thing is based on psyudo science and bullshit.

  • Shinsundo has a long history. I think it can be definately the oldest religious system, regardless Dahnmudo system I believe is good for mind and body.

  • It is not the oldest. Shinsundo is based from Taoism which is based off of Confuciusim. So you also have to take in account other religions of the west. Also understand that the founder of the Dahn Yoga centers is just bastardizing these histories for his own gain.

  • I see no historical heresy within Dahn Yoga centers yet.. Unless the maker of Dahnmudo come out and say hey I mixed such and such art to create this I see no end to the argument. But your bastardizing history, please let me know what they're claims are. I find it hard to believe they are lying about history because they are an international organization.

  • Teamsharkey I'm not here to defend or argue about the historicity of this art, yet I guess you like to do a debate, and thats fine. Dahnmudo although labeled a "martial" art, it is clearly not, and nothing more than health/healing art, there is no combat application to it. Muyedobotongji was written in the 1700's and yes the ties with Ming influended the text, however within the text itself there are "Korean-only" eliment, like Horseback riding and especially Bongukgum. Cont.

  • You can't definately lay marker saying Chinese have influenced "All Korean" arts. At least that is what I'm hearing. Korean if you've studied your history right, have had martial arts and martial groups way before Shaolin Temple, however through much warfare many have been lost. But when it comes to the Court system of Martial arts there is a Chinese influence especially during the Choson dynasty due to Tributary state. Cont.

  • Every society has had some form of fighting capability, that's just instinctive. There has always been armies and with it fighting, but very few tactics and organization. When speaking about actual combative systems, then a vast majority will date back Shaolin influence.

  • When speaking about actual combative systems, then a vast majority will date back Shaolin influence.

I don't think so, considering a gap in Shaolin's history, and supposedly some of these guys continued and reestablished Shaolin temple fighting arts. That comment of yours is due to many Wushu practioners going around saying that Shaolin is the "FATHER OF ALL MARTIAL ARTS". If that statement was the case, then I guess IDIA should actual get all the credit.

  • I wouldn't disagree with you, that India should have the credit on that. Also, if you look into the martial art history of many of the martial arts, you will see them tied back to buddhist monks and shaolin.

The different is fighting systems vs. fighting techniques. All cultures had techniques, very few had systems organized from the techniques.

  • Yes many martial arts out there claim Shaolin lineage to legitimize themselves, from Phillipinos to various asian nations. Many of their history is just unfounded. The problem here is, its not the real influence of Shaolin themselves, but it is the commercialization of Chinese and Japanese arts in the US and thus the world that popularized these arts to be considered the most legitimate, that others inorder to market they claim such history heresys, so I'm still not convinced about Shoalin.

  • The items that was done in the beginning was a mix of Wu and Cheng.

The reason I've said your trained "eyes" is because you are familiar with Wu and Cheng, before seeing any Dahnmudo. As far as I know from a practioner of Dahnmudo (modern name) the art itself is older than WU and Cheng. So regardless I believe Dahnmudo if it is really what they say it is, because I know many Korean arts are fabricated, it still stands alone as a genuine art.

  • Here you are saying "As far as I know from a practioner of Dahnmudo (modern name) the art itself is older than WU and Cheng." But at another point, you did say that Dahn Mu Do was created in the 90s. I see quite a few inconsistencies, if you do not mind me saying so.

  • Now knowing Shinsundo history, and the fact that the Dong-Yi people lived in the Eastern part of China long time ago as written in the Chinese oldest Geography/mythical text called 山海經, I say why not, but regardless Korean history is very interesting once you get deeper and deeper down to the roots. Nice talking to you sir.

  • Ok. I think I may be finding the miscommunication that is happening here. Shinsundo was influence by Chinese buddhist.

The Dahnmudo which you are seeing in this video is not related to that of Shinsundo or what real "Dahn" is. You have to understand that these Dahn Yoga/Taichi centers are cults that are bastardizing the name Dahn for their own gain.

You are correct that the concept of Shinsundo would predate Wu or Cheng, simply because yoga predates them.

  • Again, please don't assume that you are the only one with years of MA experience, and knowlege of "Asian" history. I studied Korean history as well.

However, if you would please outline a brief history of Dahn Mu Do?

  • I'm sorry if you've felt that I am assuming your this and that. I just wanted to point out that I am well qualified to say this and that. You've asked for a brief history, something that you already know why bother asking? Dahn Mu Do (the name itself) is a modern art created in the 90's based on ancient principles. The art is known to be practiced by ancient Koreans. The reason why I pointed out to be a stand alone art, is because of its Shinsundo religion background. cont.

  • You just said that the art was created in the 90's... yet at the same time you say it was practiced by ancient Koreans? Was this a typo? Not to nitpick, just curious.

  • Hey Taijiburn, when I said Dahnmudo was created in the 90's I'm refurring to the name Dahnmudo, and when I say it was practiced by ancient Koreans, I'm talking about what is in the Dahnmudo system. My reference to this comes from a Dahnmudo practicioner, and its organization published letters that I've read.

  • There is your first mistake right there. That is the same as me claiming TKD is over 2000 years old because that is what a TKD practitioner told me and it is written in their syllabus. Sorry but that just doesn't hold water.

  • TKD now a days people all know it is a modern art deprived from Okinawan Karate. If you look at many of the first instructors texts in TKD back in the early years it was all Karate texts. The reason why people say TKD history is 2000 years is because of the Taekkyon lineage, which the kicks comes from, but thats about all. TKD is a modern art I agree with you.

  • whats the music for the second demonstration? i attended the YEHA (young earth human alliance) camp march 2008 and i witnessed master Jang performance to that music. he is amazing, during the whole performance i couldn't blink my eyes because i was afraid i might miss something. chun ji kiun!!!!

  • Honestly, how much did you pay for YEHA camp?

  • about $240

  • My wish is to continue with Dahn Mu Do , learn more and to have a chance to be on stage and do presentation like that one day :-) with Love Gosia H.N.

  • every time i watch this video i get a rush. It's incredible to see how much power & energy he has. I hope that one day i can move like him.

  • I literally just came from the Hawaii Martial Arts demo.... spectacular!!! I have found a style I would like to immerse myself in!

  • Every time I watch this, I am more and more amazed. Master Owoon is awesome. I can feel my heart opening just by watching this video.

And the sword demonstration... Wow. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Master Jang is my Hero.

  • master Owoon is great. Who is master Jang?? which center is he teaching??

  • The second demonstration, the Master on the right. He teaches is one of the two main instructors for DahnMuDo School.. and he Rocks.

  • How to get into master Owoon's class?

Can he speaks English?? I heard from my classmates, he is not base in the states.

  • Master Jang is a Dahn Mu Do school instructor. He was my teacher at DMD school at Best 5 Resort in March 2007. He is incredible. He is like the Godfather! I love him!

  • He's the post person! What a perfect demonstrator he is! No facial expression changes at all throughout the movement. Incredible!!

  • His face is very peaceful. I love it.

    mayumi

  • If anyone has the music for the first part, please message me. thanks

  • This song's title is Forever by an austrialian musicical group Stratovarius from their album named Episode.

  • do you know the second song? thank you!

  • This is just awsome thank you for sharing this...!

  • The beginning music is Always Forever by Cryptal Darkness

  • But Master Owoon can MOVE!!! This video actually doesn't really do him justice. The way he moves is.. different. If you could have seen this is person you would have had an unforgettable experience. Dahnmudo is sooo cool~!!

  • I want to meet him in the future. he is great.

    mayumi

  • Yeah, he's actually a really great person *in* person, too. He has a great sense of humor and so much passion! He's an amazing martial artist but also he's a great leader. If you ever have a chance to take training from him directly, don't miss it!!! You'll absolutely love it.

  • Hey, I asked my master about Master woon. However, she didn't tell me about him that much. As some of my classmates told me that some master are not very worldly. How about him? Is he still single? How old is he? Can he speak English?

    Mayumi

  • I think the movements of the first video are awesome

  • this is beautiful. i love this song if anybody knows the title please let me know!! and yes, it might be called chenshiki at other places but at dahn yoga they call it dahn mu do.

  • Tremendous. Anyone who can sense energy, or Ki, will know the power of this demonstration. There is much more here than form and structure if you have the eyes to see it! Good luck out there all fellow Martial Artists!

  • Sorry to double post! Still figuring out Youtube.

  • Tremendous. Anyone who can feel energy, ki, will know the power of this demonstration. There is much more here than form or structure...Thank you!

  • There is no such thing as a NON COMBATIVE martial art.... it is not a martial art if it is non combative. Hence the name MARTIAL. Martial = Combative

  • Dahn Mu Do people should be embarrassed - I can't believe how blatantly plagiarized from Chen that is.

  • Obviously this person doesn't know the roots to martial arts. All the movements were created to circulate energy through the body. Combative martial arts derived from dahnmudo and other energy martial arts. By the way, they are called martial (combative) in english; whoever said that that's what it's called to the people who actually created each art. Bighead.

  • This is a load of bs. Dahn Mu Do was created sometime in the 70s or 80s, and quite clearly has Chen and Wu influences. Sorry.

  • これは陳式太極拳、間違えられないぞ!

    丹武道って一体何の事かい?

  • 本当ね!

  • one of the best dahn mu do I've seen.
