You are correct Matapan 50. In just one point alone, the Germans never made good the loss of transports that cost dearly at Stalingrad later on. Churchill, I think, made the point well when he observed that the Hun with the upper hand was a completely different creature to the Hun with a bayonet and your foot standing on his throat.

In the occupation time were not German paratroopers in Crete. In the battle of Crete you forget the 45.000 soldiers if the allies who knew about the operation mercur and expected the Germans. The Germans paratroopers were in the beginning only 5-10.000 men without weapons . The weapons were in special containers.

In Crete the Allies expected the attack , because they knew the german codes. The paratroopers fought in the whole war with courage and were famous in every front of the war for their attack spirit ( show for example battle of Monte Cassino or the Eastern Front)

Of course they did not know nothing, all people know of fighting, even if it is fights between each other. You had allies dug in on the island too, outnumbering the Germans. 7,000 Germans on ships did not make it, the paras had to fight it out unsupported. If you know wnayhting about paratroopers, they fight without heavy guns backing them up. Thats why they have to carry much more than normal troops and be far more fit and aggressive than normal troops.

They had better guns equipment better training but they hadnt faith! the greeks defendet crete even without guns...! The Allies knew from the attack in Crete , than they had decode the codes of the Germans.
The Germans fight without guns!!!!!!! The guns were in special containers . In the first two days of the operation the germans were almost WITHOUT weapons.

Thrasi2 my mistake... what ever in the occupation period the german paratroopers are not n Crete , but they fight against the Red Army in the Eastern front. Crete stayed in occupation until the end of the war and only with the capitulation of Germany became Crete free. In the last months of the war the Germans were in Crete without help from the continent but they still stand there!!!!

Almost 8000 Cretans were killed during the 4 years of Nazi occuptation of their beautiful island.
For German tourists it is better to stay away at the south coastal line near Viannos and Sfakia etc. The Cretans prefer English and Dutch tourists.

matapan. I know quite a few people who were involved in the war. None of these people who were at Crete hated the Germans. in fact they all only hated one thing - war itself. My father and uncles never attended remembrance day parades, as they caused too much pain for them, and were normally attended by politicians and others who craftily avoided fighting and dieing. All we can do now is to teach younger people that war is crazy, and that they should not go anywhere near one.

I have not seen that movie but will certainly try to. I confess I did not know about this affair with the German General; guess I'll be finding information about that tonight! Thanks for great video. The Greeks, assisted by their friends from UK, Australia, & New Zealand fought very hard and may, I repeat MAY, have been the difference between victory & defeat for Russia. Hitler's invasion of Russia was delayed, and 1 of the reasons was because it took longer to defeat the Greeks & their allies than the Germans thought. After the battle? Of course the Nazis acted like animals. They acted like animals everywhere they went.

matapan. My father and uncles fought in this battle. Many people called them cowards as they lost. It wasn't easy though. My father had to walk to the beach. The beach marshall then pointed to the ships. He had to swim out to the ships about 12 miles out, and they picked him up using the nets going past at battle speed. He was picked up by HMS Ajax, which was a small English patrol vessel and given a welcome cup of cocoa. He was also bombed by Stuka, a terrifying experience.

They were not cowards. I'm glad your father survived. They lost the battle but caused such heavy losses to the Germans that no major airborne operations were ever carried out by Germany after their experience on island of Crete. If your father is still alive best wishes to him. If he has passed away then Rest in Peace. What you said about battle speed; I believe thats because the Royal Navy was hit very hard by German Air Force, took heavy losses. Bad time for the Allies.

matapan. My father and uncles have all passed away, as you would expect, My father never blamed the RN for going past at full battle speed. He knew the ships were in great danger. He was just pleased to have been rescued. My father was also very sorry for all the Germans who lost their lives. He said they had no chance and thought that it was such a great loss that such fine men would die needlessly. My father was always anti-war after he came back - he was badly wonded in Libya. .

My mother was from Southampton UK. She was 12 when WW2 began. Her city was bombed, sometimes heavy, sometimes not. People died no matter. She hated the attacks that came at night. Years of war. Finally it ended. And just like your father she was anti-war for the rest of her life.

After Libya, my father was sent home. He was operated on by the same guy who got the bronze medal in the Chariots of Fire race, then a brigadier general. After my father got home, he was presented with the feathers from young ladies, which he accepted. When they were told he had been badly wounded and lost his eye, the young ladies withdrew the feathers. You see, men not fighting were considered cowards. Note carefully that the ladies were not fighting themselves!

Indeed they were not. Seems to me your father certainly did his part. One day I would like to visit Crete. But I think in winter. I've heard it's very hot there in summer & being from Southern California I get enough heat.

The British and their Commonwealth allies fought very hard on the german balkan campaign and they had many loses.... In Crete the British and the Commonwealth allies were numerical much stronger than the greek army . The enigma-codes were decoded from the British and they fought very bravly with us ....
