  • brilliant, ill just have to keep practising

  • thats awesome dude, i can only just manage Flower of Scotlland without looking at the Tabs :L

  • James - you are truly talented. You know your tradition, and you have dedicated a lot of time and effort to perfecting your art. By the time we get to the Gravel Walk... it's inspired, and inspirational

  • The thing with good harp players, they are blues players. When they play Irish reels the tradition goes into the bucket. It's a reel with a blues accent.

  • nice. Do you find that your harp is in G for the majority of Irish tunes as well as traditional Bluegrass tunes (ie red haired boy etc).

  • Love this video,im trying to learn some irish reel jigs,do you have any tabs for this you would share with me and is it a normal diatonic or a slide harp?

  • wunderschön, ganz großartig, mit genau dem richtigen drive und gefühl interpretiert, der für reels typisch ist

  • Awesome!

    It's tongue blocking, isn't it?

  • deadly

  • I can only think that the 2 "thumbs down" must be from really jealous people

Well played James, well played indeed!

  • amazing

  • well done mate...love it...

    cheers....

  • I am an Irish Dancer. These Reels are incredible, make my irish heart beat :) What are the names of all these reels? I just bought a harmonica and want to learn this trade! You are very talented James.

  • Thank you! I start off with Gallagher's Jig into the reels: Dawn and Gravel Walks. Good luck!

  • its good !! im play violin .. im from mexico its good ... but my english is bad :P but good song !

  • your cross harp is in C ?

  • harp is in G

  • Thanks!

  • I first spotted this video about 3-4 months ago and have had it flagged as a favorite and seem to keep coming back to view this video. I am somewhat of a musician myself but am no where near the caliber of the exceptional talent that you are. You are a remarkable player. Though I can't read or write music, I have composed several tunes over the years...and man...would love to hear you perform them. By far the best harmonica playing I've ever heard.

  • James, this would be impossible to play without the Paddy Richter tuning, correct?

  • You and Brendan are the kings of the Celtic music....I'll NEVER be able to achieve this level of playing.... People like you make the human being more interesting. Love Christelle

  • Thank you, Christelle! But a king, I am not. I am just a humble minstrel with a fife in one hand and a mouth box in the other, that's willing to play for a shilling or two or a mere crust of bread.

Great vids on your site, Christelle. Excellent playing and variety! We shall meet in Sacramento!

    Cheers!

  • Hey James, being humble is something great for a human being but your type of play is forcing admiration....

I can't wait to meet you at SPAH 09 to drink a couple of beers (and to steal some of your tricks LOL)

    Love

    Christelle

  • See you then!

  • Sh*t that's great!!

  • Excellent playing, very smooth and flowing from one tune to the other.

    well done.

    john

  • Klasse!RESPEKT!

  • You are an amazing player. Great stuff!

  • Great playing James.

    Thank you very much.

    Steph.

  • oh, you are amazening, what harmonica do you use??

  • You is wow

  • Great playing !!what's the name of the first jig?

  • Gallagher's Frolics

  • Unbelievable !! is that a diatonic? if so you are a master!

I hope more people find you on youtube.

    Andy

  • Not just a diatonic. It's an XB-40, which is like an upgraded diatonic since it bend more.

  • Wowzers .. Go Go Gadget Harmonica ;)

    Great stuff James!

  • That was fantistic James, gosh, you can do wonders with that harp. I love to play but I don't see how do it the way you do. 5 stars for sure. Linda

  • maestro

  • Is this the Australian Jim Conway, brother of Mic Conway? Does anyone know?

  • The Australian Jim Conway has MS and is confined to a wheelchair, however, his is still harpn'.

Saw him in a jig last Sunday night - fantastic! Lookup Jim Conway's Big Wheel.

  • does this have a name or did you make it?

  • Great player and some harp players friend of me who know him he is as well a very nice guy !

  • Traumhaft!

  • truly breathtaking - i almost broke into a river dance - Thank God for The Irish

  • Sounds great. Nice bends.

  • how did you learn that

  • Very nice! The XB-40 has unlimited unexplored potential for altered tunings. Nice to find another intrepid explorer!

  • ohh superbmm that was Gravel walk at the end

  • Fantastic!!! It sounds amazing. i got to get back to using the xb40.

    Thanks!

    Alan,

  • Awesome!!! Now if only i knew how to do the Irish jig, I'd hire you as my percussionist.

  • what tunes where those...

  • The master or should I say Grandmaster.

    Wonderful. Thanks for posting.

  • That's outstanding James. Good grief, I love my XB40's. still trying to transfer my tongue skills to these harps...getting there! what key are you there?

    Cheers!

  • it's crazy! the tongue blocking master!!!

    :)

  • Thanks! I'm using a Hohner XB-40 in G with the 3 hole blow tuned up a step(Paddy tuning).

  • using the XB 40 seems very adapted to the style of music.

You do sound like a bagpipe!

I never heard someone play harmonica like you!

  • Fantastic!!! Love it!! Is your harp Standard tuned or has it been altered? (Paddy Tuning) or are you just bending the lower notes? Keep the tunes coming!!

  • Smokin'!

    Thank you sir!

  • Gallagher's Jig, The Dawn Reel, Gravel Walks Reel

  • Great, what are the tunes?

  • I have no word... I am just checking for my medicines for now !... (Is that.. paradise ?)
