  • firts i want to apologize for my bad english but this movi is really good why someone say things like "is a sad film or i dont like cause is so hard and rude" nha!!! our life sometime is worse than this movi just we dont take the time for wach this move talk abous the hapinnes the life, that life, that sometime culd be hard but everyone culd change and make a better life!!!!! again sorry for my bad english

  • One of the very greatest movies ever made. Beauty and horror, despair and redemption. This is a film everyone should see.

  • This is a very sad film. I actually felt pity for his father, who was his own worst enemy. It's a tragedy but very inspirational at the same time. The music suits the mood of the film really well.

  • I saw this great movie many many times. Just super.

  • I never played this instrument, but the movie is masterpiece, after I watched he movie I received an enormous wish to learn to play. And gather the strength to say no to all mean fathers!

  • Looks like a Rafa Nadal look alike at 4:50!! lol

  • @MrSamc94 hAHAHA YEAH xD

  • damn this was an awsome movie

  • It is the Rach Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Opus 30, but probably, many parts were perhaps omitted/substituted. I don't know the whole piece, I can barely play past page 4. But, Youtube Martha Argerich, playing in 3 parts I think, directed by Riccardo Chailly conducting, in the 90's? I wish they showed her hands sooner, moving so fast you can't even keep up, but look closely, the piano wires going nuts. Eventually, they do show her hands, WOW. And for 'Shine' fans, Lynn Redgrave, a great loss.

  • great movie. I have always wondered about the authenticity of this scene. If this is a true representation of his performance, then, you might notice that at 1:25, there is a shot of a recording studio and later, there is a shot of his father presumably listening to his performance on reel to reel. Am I to understand that this recording exists? And what of his 'breakdown' and fall at the end of the scene. Any ideas? Anybody know for sure?

  • One of the best movies ever, if you play, you understand.

  • @camus490 i know exactly how you feel lol

  • @jdrms I didn't know you could reply,etc.. to comments on this site. Thank you for yours.

PS - I don't practice anymore, but even so, still can't past page 4 (of 80) , and ever so slowly.

  • Can you imagine having such a song define you?

  • ...and 4:36 isn't even the Rach 3. :)

  • why do you say that?

  • @eltachimetro

Because it's not? I've played piano since I was 8, played the second movement of the Rach 3, and listened to it probably a thousand times. There is not one bar of that music at 4:36 in the piece.

  • I think the film is trying to convey the way David Helfgott was feeling at the time of the performance...his mind was meant to be detached from the performance..hence, the notes sound incoherent.....

  • He didn't actually collapse or have a mental breakdown on stage like this. This movie took a lot of liberties.

  • most movies do

  • @maulcs

    wow, you're right

  • you know when it shows his dad listening to it, is that his son playing or does he just happen to be listening to it at the time?

  • He's listening to the recording of it after the fact, because you can see he's holding on to the medal he won from the performance afterwards.

  • This scene is so brilliantly executed, it SUFFOCATES!! Specially towards the end of it, when David snaps after finishing the piano piece.

  • i agree but david was disconnected for the passion of the song, what a tragedy!

  • fabulous film, best scene!!! simply brilliant!!!

  • i love it...thank you ..

  • Can Tremendous Music Activity affect the brain like that?

  • yeah.... i guess it can.

  • well studied have shown that the Music of Bach and Mozart makes a certain part of your brain bigger (forgot wich one) I saw it on a Documentary, Also in Sweden they made an Experiment with pregnant woman they choose six and they all were made to play piano during the ninth month pregnancy, and listen to Bach, two of the children were born With Perfect Pitch and most of them grew up to be Talented Musicians ;).

  • calling bullshit.

All of those prenatal theories have been debunked.

  • @GalactusPBN no it's true. these theories happen to be true. or would you say that it's all coincidents if just things happened to exactly those children?! i don't think so.

  • The prenatal idea hasn't been completely agreed on. It's likely that these children were exposed to music in the first few weeks of their lives as well, and those might also have triggered such developments - being born with perfect pitch obviously can't be tested. Certain things may happen during pregnancy, but it's debated how much of an effect they have.

Watch the PBS documentary "Music and the Mind," though; it's really interesting.

  • Genial.

  • Una pelicula genial.

  • what happened to the piano player?!! is he dead now due to over exhaustion or what?!

  • no he had a brain anurism. hes still alive today and he still plays concerts

  • Actually... I'm going to his concert tonight! I Expect it to be FABULOUS!!!

  • David's teacher looks like Tchaikovsky hehe!

  • thank you migmed for your ack of this film !!! pls

  • Thank you migmed.blogspot for your arrangement of this music and its context!!!!

  • The movie would be about 50x better if they had the entire concerto here.

  • @LMJ314142 that would be awesome, but it would also add like half an hour to the movie;)

  • It´s te best film that I ever seen in all my life...the story, the direction, the music, all is perfect, sublime, it can affect me in a very deep way...

  • Lejos, la mejor película que he visto en todo mí vida. La historia, las actuaciones, la música, la dirección, cada vez que la veo me emociono hasta el alma...

  • Is this a true story, did this happen?

  • yeah its true

  • Wtf does that mean

  • this is one of my all time fave films, i can listen to rach 3 over and over. awesome. and an amazing story

  • when he closes his eyes and he is sweting, he looks like raphael nadal

  • lol...

  • Zachary Thomas, I think, is the young man playing young Helfgott. He, himself, has amazing presence, and hopefully plays the piano. It was an inspiring movie and really brought my kids into classical music. Helfgott will always hold a place in history, not only for his 'disputed' talent but for his story which drew so much greatly needed attention to classical piano. A masterpiece. G. Rush did a magnificent portrayal of David Helfgott.

  • an oscar well earned

  • Actor Noah Taylor is playing the young Helfgott here.

  • wow+.+

    it's magnificent

  • Shine inspired me to try to play this peice

  • and you wont tell me now, that you re doing well onplaying this piece !!!!!

  • @goldlovingidiot yeah and how's that working out for you?

  • Me encanta Rachmaninov, y su traslación a esta pelicula"Shine" formidable

  • rachmaninov was a fukin genius! at 3:30 is where it gets nuts

  • I´ve met and talked to Helfgott after a concert i Aarhus Denmark, and he is excactly as portraied in the movie, very wierd but an extremly nice and gifted man.

  • He probably fainted because Rach took over his body and then left..leaving an empty shell

  • For those that have not seen the movie, please check it out. Well worth it.

  • I need to see this movie

    Rachmaninov is a genius.

  • @DoddzyKingofSynth I've watched this movie twentyfive times, But not so much the first half. Wonderful. Some of the most touching scenes I've seen.

  • Amazing

  • I JUST see the movie and I love it! I didnt know the story of David and I find it very inspiring....

  • He's not playing the whole thing. It's a arrangement. Some of it is a medley of the whole piece.

  • well it's supposed that he fainted cous' he was schizofrenic, actually we don't really know, what i think is his fanther, i mean in the movie he act like an asshole, maybe all that presure made poor David faint and colapsed, Really Good Movie Shine!!!•••

  • this movie takes your breath away. The Rach 3 is purely for geniuses. And Olga Kern is totally fabulous playing it! ;)

  • why does he faint?

  • Watch the movie

  • he has a mental problem. I really recomend you the movie "shine" (i just saw it) its fantastic!

  • this is an awesome film!

  • My Piano Teacher is the hand double in this!!!!
