we have reacted to what she said because there is no way to know what she meant. what she said is racist and divisive and is out of touch with today's social/political Seattle.

most of us aspire to inclusion and diversity but don't agree with these comments to vote along racial lines.

Hmmm, inclusive? That's funny aren't the majority of Seattle City Councilmembers white? "Diversity" is a buzz word that really means sprinkling people of color around to look "inclusive" but white folks really run the show politically on the local and state level. With all that coffee there in Seattle you'd think you folks would wake up and smell it. Grab a clue. Diversity is an illusion. For decades Seattle has elected people with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Sam Smith was black-- and Sherry Harris a lesbian. We've had mothers and fathers, grandparents and people with no kids on there. To try and limit consideration of candidates only to 'people who look like you or come from you' hurts all minority communities and is contrary to our political traditions. My second look at the video confirms that Venus clearly does not understand this.

It may have been clumsy but she's right. We need more people of color on the council, we need a Latina on the counsel, we need a young mother on the council, and we need more women on the council. I look at the make up of the group and give real consideration to those voices not represented.

Following Venus's line of thought--Washington would never have had a Chinese-American governor; Seattle would not have had a black Mayor or County Executive and Deval Patrick would not be the first black governor of Massachusetts. No progress; no plurality and divisiveness.

I was at the forum, and Venus is appealing to the largely immigrant, mostly Hispanic audience. It is a pure, calculated, racist appeal. 'Vote for those who look like you?' If the Seattle mayor Nickels said that, he'd be kicked out of office! This kind of toxic politics should not occur in any city and it should deeply offend anyone who hears it, as I was.
