  • Badass as fuck

  • damn that beginning is slick and as always Opeth IS THE BEST GROWLER IN A PROGRESSIVE METAL BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'll hunt those 4 motherfuckers!!

  • 0:17 Lopez pushes the little Divx logo out of the way

  • ahhhhhhhhhhh incredibly brutal!!!

  • Grande Opeth lml

  • Everyone bitching about Axe, check him out in the new Opeth song "The Devil's Orchard", he is definitely extremely talented, and couldn't showcase his full abilities on Watershed

  • Well if you have seen the live @ wacken 2008 version, its a bit faster and lamentations has a dvd quality too, it has been triggered afterwards. So i wouldn't blame axe, this song is extremely difficult

  • Comment removed

  • 3:26 - Watch Mikael shake his in disbelief of the awesomeness of that riff!!

One of the BEST headbanging songs ever made in my opinion *moshes*

  • what album is this from?

  • @LyricsArFun Deliverance.

  • @MrMike0113 Actually, now that I think about it, technically it's from Lamentations.

  • 4 people aren't apprentices

  • G Damn! this double bass is tight.

  • One of the most Stunning reefs ever made, so simple and yet so amazing! this one and the ending of A fair Jugment should be on your "collection" of heavyest riffs ever made!

  • 8:10. 'nuff said.

  • if you don't recognize this song, you're a fuckin cunt!

  • stumbled upon this song unintentionally in 2006, caught my attention, been living in a bubble before that I guess! I now have all of Opeth's albums, they havebeen my favorite band since, I love revisiting this song!

  • Lopez has a better technique than Axenrot!!!!! but he is a good drummer though

  • triggers don´t make you faster!!!!!! amateurs don´t understand that

  • 8:56 - when mike screams i almost have a fucking orgasm

  • drumming is fucking perfect.

  • One of the only songs that can pull off heavy to melodic transitions in a way that makes it all fit. So awesome. This song is too good.

  • Great song! Does anyone has an idea wich pedals martin uses?

  • @Joskethefarmer

    Iron Cobras.

  • @avgweber Does he trigger them?

  • omfg this is the BEST band LIVE !

no other band metal live sounds so perfect and flawless i think!! this sounds just like the studio version unlike million other live bands!

  • @themask786 Opeth is amazing, yes, but "no other metal band live sounds so perfect and flawless"? Go and see The Faceless next time they're around your city, you will NOT be disappointed

  • @ahg337 also LoG are amazing live:-)

  • Holy fuc*ing Mother Mary! Can u hear awesomeness of this sound? Perfect.

  • I love martin's badass face at 3:20

  • axe is good but lopez kills with a lot of feeling and variation in is drumming...in conclusion axe will never reach this level of coolness:-P

  • Best metal singer of all time !!... Mr. Akerfeldt :)

    /m/

  • @hejeval777

He is good, but let's not forget Mr. Peter Tägtgren

God can't imagine if they where to work together on an album

  • @UltimateGamerNerd92 yeah, I this would be awesome, but really, Peter > Mikael when we talking about growl.

Peter is master, Mikael is apprentice :)

  • @mrdeathamore hahaha indeed :)

  • apprentice(s)?!

  • some of the most awesome drum parts ever!!

  • This song crushes! Yeah, Martin Lopez is amazing & one of my favorite drummers. Long live Opeth. Thanks.

  • This video should be renamed "Martin Lopez shitting all over Axentrash".

  • BRUTAL!

  • this is THE shit! :D

  • AMAZING :D

  • my faggotry level detects many faggotry in this youtube insertion, my count is 4 faggots. I can't locate them though. Can someone hand me a gun and point those silly and funny bastards that disliked master's apprentince ? So i can blow them brains off. Thanks

  • better quality than the other one, thanks mate

  • martin lopez was... and will be the best Opeth's drummer ever...

  • martin lopez is god, when he used to play drums :D

  • Opeth´s drumming is unique. i hope one day i could play like him or like axe.

  • Could this sound any better? Really I mean, could it?

  • @bravo075 no it couldnt, Opeth is AMAZING live

  • @Flaggius True, true

  • Anybody have any idea what the lyrics are about?

  • @Benteiron the lyrics are about dying, (suicide possibly?) and going to hell

  • @snowboardingfreak94 I thought that too, but then again, masters apprentices? What does the name have to do with the lyrics? Especially since it is in a plural form and there only seems to be one character in the song.

  • @Benteiron master's apprentices is named after some australian rock band that Mikael is a fan of. same with blackwater park

  • @snowboardingfreak94 LoL. I knew that BW park is named after an old rock band but didnt knwo of masters apprentices.

  • goddamn this song is awesome... I would make love to it if i could :P

  • Det här är tung häftig musik när Opeth är som bäst

  • love that acoustic intro

  • did anyone else think they were about to go into hammer smashed face at the end?

  • @snowboardingfreak94 Ya, I see what you mean. THAT would be funny. Or what if they just busted out and played Bloodbath?

  • @snowboardingfreak94 you mean hammer smashed fist?

  • things change get over it, Opeth are still gods !!!!

  • Martin is so amazing. And here is a official explanation explaining Martin's department - he got tired after 10 years and wanted to concentrate on Fifth to Infinity. That's it. Nothing more or less. Stop spreading rumors about him, show some respect. I love Lopez with all my heart and hate Axe, sure, but everyone have to accept Martin's decision.

  • dear lord Lopez is a god amongst men.... love axe as well tho.

  • its live what do you expect?

  • Perfect Shit!

    Luv This Song

  • This song is perfect, end of discussion

Martin Lopez > everyone else ever

  • @passinginyourwords are you kidding me? There are NO THE BEST DRUMMER. I know minimum 15 drummers who can be the best in my opinion, but for me there is no the best, ALL THE BEST...

  • @passinginyourwords song is perfect, drummer is quite perfect. portnoy, roddy and kollias are better imo.

  • No question dude. Portnoy would walk all over Martin Lopez technically speaking, which is really the only non-opinion based way to judge a musicians skills (separate from songwriting skills).

  • I was talkin to the drummer and guitarist from Dark Tranquility. They told me martin (the old drummer from amon amarth) had to stop playin with opeth due to bleedin from his stomach.

  • @theralpha No, he had anxiety, and he couldn't keep his food down, so he started to get weaker, and he left, and said he would come back, but didn't yet. It says in the Ghost Reveries Special Edition.

  • @theralpha

I've met Martin in person a douzen times. Im meeting him on a regular basis and I, for once know the REAL answer to why he quit. Sure, alot of fans like the "Opethmystery" but the fact is - there is a reason.

Martin quit the band because he felt that it was enough, as he said, and I quote: "10 years... that's alot." Its as simple as that.

That's the ONLY reason. Show him some respect and leave it alone. He is currently focusing on his new band, Fifth to Infinity. Listen to them!

  • The way he switches between the growl and the melodic singing...

  • heehee good shit, this even better than the album version.

  • I fucken love his hair, its like its from a commercial. Such an awesome but simple song. I still cant play it while growling :(. Reminds me when i saw them live

  • He has the greatest hair ever!! :-)

  • Lopez's double bass is this song is alot tighter and consistent than axes at least judging from the few videos i've seen of axe, though he was good when i saw them live.

btw they are both awesome drummers, way better than i am

  • i agree. i saw them live with axe, hes amazing, but its not the same

  • @tandersn9 It's kind of odd. I am such a young fan of music, that I never got to see Death live, or Pantera, and I never got to see Metallica or Slayer in their hayday, and I never got to see Exodus with Steve Souza and all of that stuff. But I've seen these guys with Martin Lopez and I've seen them with Axenrot too. I have a lot of bands to regret missing, but these guys are one of the few bands that I have seen in their good days, which I hope continues until Akerfeldt dies!

  • @tandersn9 Axe does it A LOT faster than Lopez. I have no idea why, but he does. That's why it sounds so sloppy. That's at least what I've seen.

  • @ConElPancake Its not sloppy really, its just that one video from Wacken. Check Live At The Royal Albert Hall, he is pretty much flawless even very fast.

  • @tandersn9 eventhough lopez's double bass sounds better u should notice the tempo is a little slower than when axe plays it but axe needs more time to settle down thats what i feel and i will agree with u by sayin both are good...

  • @qaswwedfrrtghyy hmm yeah maybe that's part of the issue. I used to this then to the studio version and this is pretty close to the original tempo.

  • @tandersn9 who gives a fucking shit. They had to replace him. Lopez is good, Axe is good. They couldn't have found a better replacement or a "new lopez" anyways, so shut the fuck up with this retarded discussion

  • @Sargatha can I give you birth day spankings while we listen to opeth together!?!?!

  • @tandersn9 True, I've noticed that as well. But in all fairness, it seemed to me that they played the song quite a bit faster in the vids I've seen with Axenrot.

  • Reveries was the last album Lopez did. He quit due to stomach problems.

  • Stomach problems? loool go and get better information dude.

  • Lol techincal drumming, ur a clueless kid my freind. its called playing in rythem to the music, u saying that if there was a 4/4 riff being played, and u hit everything in off time and do some fancy shit and wahtever that it will sound better, then ur wrong, get a clue

  • this is such a sick live recording

  • OPETH!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah I just saw them live in toronto last night

    Holy fuck amazing of course

But yeah I underestimated axe hes got a great feel for the sound which is really important in this band as you probably all know

Lopez's drumming on Reveries was just spectacular

I mean baying of the hounds

He couldn't have been more perfect

    I will definitely miss him

Yet I suppose they're moving on

Still though I hope to see him in another band sometime soon.... wait is he?

  • lopez didnt play on reveries i thought

  • I agree, but I don't think fans give Mendez enough recognition. He writes some really catchy and stylish bass lines. His style totally fits both the metal and progressive rock feel that Opeth embodies :)

  • I love mendez. He shines pretty bright in tracks like Wreath and Heir Apparent (that ending is amazing).

  • I love both drummers, but I think it's unfair to say that Axe is only good at death metal drumming. I think he has shown that he can play stylish, progressive rhythms throughout Watershed, along with brutal, technical drums. I will miss Lopez's spicy flare though. Both truly are master drummers.

  • Mikael = GENIUS!

  • OWNAGE, Friday 10/04/09 all to Ellinikos Kosmos !!! Cant fucking wait till then !!

  • I can't stop watching this, Akerfeldt has such an awesome death voice!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OPETH THE GODS OF DEATH METAL

  • wow how he can sing like that in a live show!!! awesome!

    love this song.

  • yeah baby..

cannot wait for their gig in romania this summer :X

  • The intro to this song is pure head banging nonsense, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this band ruless so much .total ownage , theres no other band like this

  • best song of theirs in my opinion. no band campares!

  • wow i got the tickets to opeth show in warsaw ,poland on the 21'st of march......iam so excited....yes yes!!!!!! :) :)

  • The beginning part reminds me of something I'd hear on a Nile CD. Great song too!

  • reminds me of morbid angel

  • When it come to top notch Progressive Metal Drumming...Martin Lopez is on top of the list!!!God damn Opeth,I love there sound.

  • God I miss Lopez on drums. Don't get me wrong tho, Axe is great. But Lopez just seems to play with a lot more passion, live especially :)

  • You my friend are not wrong at all!!!!MARTIN LOPEZ IS A DRUMGOD FOR SURE.Axe I think is more a black metal/death metal drummer? When it comes to progressive metal drumming...ML is the man!

  • You're definitely right. Axe can wail when it comes to punishing death metal beats. ie. Bloodbath :) But when it comes to the softer parts, Lopez's style just can't be mimicked or copied. God I love that man lol.

  • you are not the first one who thinks the same way.

Lopez and Axe are in a same technical level, but they are very distinct at the same time...

  • what is "technical drumming"

  • mmmmm..... all the tricks that you learn by books, classes and practising.... that's technical.

now, the big difference between lopez and axe is the feeling....

    that's my point

  • Technical is using more than regular 4/4 that's in 90% of music. Whip out some off beats, odd timings, hitting every drum and cymbal you have, and confusing the hell out of listeners.

  • i think thats the best deffinition of technical druming ive ever seen haha. i guess its going out side the normal paradigms of conventional music which is hard becaude western music has drummed in (no pun intended) conventions we cant help but abide by - ie 4/4 metre, tonality of intervals...

  • fair doos. what i actually meant was you'd have a better grasp of odd times then. i dont know what was going on in my head when i posted that

  • It can still be in 4/4, if you use polyrhythmics. But still, technical elements makes it so much more fun, and gives songs more variation.

  • yes that's Opeth (both drummers ofc)

  • Masterpiece. Holy shit. It's like every time is the first time.

  • I saw this song live!

    WOOOO!

  • The greatest and coolest band in the world, that is for shure!!!!

  • They play perfectly. It sounds like they recorded the video and mixed in the song from the album but they didn't.

  • i love the double kickers!!

  • haha well I gave everyone thumbs up here, just because of your awesome taste of music,

cheers to you all and hail opeth for creating such masterpieces in a row \m/

  • great song...

  • Amazing!!!!

  • the best band in the world no doubt

  • Agreed.

  • Love this song man! Every time I listen to it, it pumps me up! I can feel the adrenaline rush....cheers to Opeth

  • Fucking EEEPPPPPIICCCC!!!!

  • they are pretty much perfectly precise with every song that they play..

its amazing these guys can even remember the songs due to their length, let alone play them perfectly...

  • Yeah I think the same everytime I watch the

    Deliverance vid...

  • Ok well i dono if anyone still wants to know, but the intro track is "through pains to heaven" by popol vuh!

  • holy shit i know how the crowd feels! i was so stoked to see opeth for the first time and they opened with masters. i didn't even know if they would play it.

  • haha...yeah it is awesome to see them live

  • they opened with Demon of the Fall when i saw them, and I know exactly how you felt lol

  • fucking love the main riff.....fucking love the whole sogn.........FUCKING LOVE OPETH!!!!

  • omfg 8:11 - 8:18

  • PLUNGING INTO THE DEEPEST VOID OF BLOOD AND CELEBRATE THE EEEEEEEENNNNDDDD!!!!

    I love that part!

  • to bad martin lopez cant play with them any more..hes one awsome drummer

  • man what's his story...im from chile so not much news about bands come to our country... i did heard he has cancer or something like that :(

  • He got anxiety attacks and stuff because of all the touring and he had a blood disease or something.

  • :( thanks

    :(

  • I think it was just anxiety attacks from performing in front of a crowd.

  • am not really an Opeth fan but godamnt Akerfeld's brutal vocals kick ass!! Plus the song is amazing....

  • you might prefer the bloodbath songs then, mikaels in that band as well.

  • Master's Apprentices is a fucking masterpiece! :)

  • WOW

  • Opeth is the best band ever !! ^^

  • what is the song in the beginning before the song they play

  • "when" i think. its on roundhouse tapes first song

  • nah bro i figured it out its by nosftru soundtrack

  • OMFG!!!! this is even better than the actual album version...

  • right, amazing !

  • i concure

  • love the drums at the verse! much better than the studio version! =D

  • i miss Mr. Lindgren

  • hey, anyone know what mikael uses as a voice processor?

  • lmao mikael akerfeldt has short fingers in the beginning \m/ :P

btw does anyone know what song is playing in the beginning? that's always the opening song and i like it :P

  • popol vuh - through pains to heaven

  • yea lol haha after a posted it i kinda noticed it wasnt triplets, but yea couldnt figger it out any way :P cheers bro, (haha ive only been playing for 1 year and 3/4)

  • Hehe :-) Okey.

  • Man, this is not When, it is from the MAYH album, this is from Deliverance. When is shorter than this the orginal length of this song is 10.32, hile When is 9.14.

  • holy shit, hes using wodden drum sticks, what a beast, and also, the timing around 3:00 dont quote me on it, i am a drummer but, not to sure on this, i think its standerd 4 4 timing its just frazzing and triplets and shizzle, still very amazing tho :) yea im not sure, but thats just me taking a guess at it.

  • What? You gotta practice your drums dude.

There are no triplets at all and no 'shizzle'.

They're playing an interchangable 4/4 and 7/8 pattern. You should've recognised it with ease.

  • which are the parts that are 7/8 ??

  • starts at about 2:50

  • shit god i cant remember the name of the drummer but he is the man!
