he wouldnt be penalized for that however since he lost the place through it. maybe villeneuve turning in on him? but again it's questionable because he probably just didnt see him. arnoux ran very wide at the last corner and villeneuve got through, shame, i think arnoux drove superbly.
This is F1...the real racing where braging rights come first and championship second. This is the kinda racing i grew watching...not the crap i saw on sunday in the Belgian grand prix.
The only other race that's worth mentioning -- Schumacher's 5th place win after being penalised and starting from the back of the pack in the (2005??) Monaco Grand Prix.
If they'd only remove the stupid fuelling from the racing. Then we would see more action on the racetrack. Nowadays majority of the passes is being executed via pitstops, which is highly GAY.
The last year before refuelling came along (1993) was some great racing. Ever since then it has gone more and more towards tactics with fuel and passing in the pitlane.
Good old time when what was really important was great mad pilots like Gilles and the immense creativity and geniality of designers like Chapman. Not this UHT low-fat F1 of today: what is really important is a bunch of hitech stuff, and a big team to manage all the details: big show, low emotion...
yees they should never have gone away from slicks - that was stupid. And they should go back to 3.5 litre v10's - not small v8s revving to 20000 rpm - they actually cost more to run as they are so stressed out.
And they need to go back to big fast corners like lesmo 2, 130R, tamburello etc (just increase the run offs so no more accidents like Senna's.)
i wasnt around to see these brilliant drivers but just by watching these clips i know F1 is nowhere near as excitin as it used to be,back then it wa just Arse,Machine and Tarmac,no electronic nannys

those days are back? you got no clue mate not a fuckin clue, f1 today is shit, kids in expensive cars being told how to drive by old men making money.
However, I think that it can't you compare. We're talking about the f1 without electronics helps, where the only help to race is the driver ability, and in this, Gilles es the best...
Is strange, you're canadian,... You should know your it...
It's not just the tracks that are easier today. Back then the cars where more difficult to control (primitive suspensions and brakes, no computer designed aerodinamics, etc). It took balls to push those things like Senna, Piquet and Villeneuve.
Today FIA keeps limiting engine size, while the brakes and everything else keeps getting better. When cars are incredibly stable at 300kph and brake in 50 meters, there is no place for overtaking.
Brakes and suspensions were not primitive, not the standards of then, on the contrary 1979 was the time when Brabham introduced carbon brakes, and the aerodynamics ground-effects produced even more downforce on some of the cars than today, but without the turbulence.
I agree that the cars need more power, but they also need to bring back slicks and a clean aerodynamics solution (they should bring back the ground-effects).
ridiculous idea, a return of ground effect cars would be lethal. They were banned for a reason (crazy low ride heights and any disruption to air flow underneath the car would be lethal) What they need now is to get rid of rear diffusers and clean up the air flow coming from the car infront so other cars can slipstream easier. Also making brakes less effective and thus increasing braking distances would make overtaking easier.
^The ride height wouldn't have to be so crazy low and there's no need for sliding skirts, and with some active/reactive/semi-active suspensions and failsafe movable wings they'd fix these issues.
back in the day when men drove f1, not blokes who look gay, and do what there told by bernie fuck face ecclestone, and drive round tracks designed to stop close racing and constant overtaking, worrying if your hair gonna look could for the interview afterwards why ur bullshit 2/3 stop strategy didnt work, borrrringgg. come back mansell and senna, never send boys to a mans job
Awsome battling. I've primarily followed MX over the years and i'm curious if the same kind of racing exists now in F1 as well- someone runs away with it and every else sits back, content with the position they run in.
I saw Gilles Villeneuve and Keke Rosberg do this same dance in 1977 at Edmonton International Speedway in Formula Atlantic. At the end of the race, Villeneuve's car had a large black circle on the left side of the cockpit that he acquired from Rosberg's car in Turn 5.
Rosberg and Villeneuve were the most exciting drivers I ever watched.
They could race like that back then because the cars had ground effects and they didn't lose down force when directly behind another car so they could follow closely while going through turns.
even if they could stick close to each other, they wouldn't do it, because lose or win they still get their huge salaries, so they choose to race safely. money drove away the passion.
That's the most incredible footage I've ever seen. Within inches of each other at over 180mph, neither one backing off, just insane. Where are men like this today with the much safer cars??
I think you completely missed the point. He was making fun of his coworker for liking NASCAR, not saying he agreed with him. And if "you're" going to call someone a "fucking idiot," make sure you spell "you're" and "where" right when you do it. P.S.: Punctuation and capitalization are your friend. Idiot.
Sorry, I apoligize for what was said a week ago apparently my younger brother that likes F-1 Racing was on here. I personally dont like racing to begin with. Please excuse him. and he definitely does need to learn to spell lol. Again, sorry about that.
The only loser in that race is Jean-Pierre Jabouille because he scored the first win for a turbocharged car and no one remebers that. Most only remember the greatest scrap in F1 history.

That's the most incredible footage I've ever seen. Within inches of each other at over 180mph, neither one backing off, just insane. Where are men like this today with the much safer cars??
RIP Gilles :(

And a Redneck I work with says,"there is only one great form of racing and that NASCAR."
akearney47 5 years ago
your a fucking idiot nascar is a race were little cars go around in fucking circles...you are a freaking redneck for liking tht garbage
RRod22 5 years ago
I think you completely missed the point. He was making fun of his coworker for liking NASCAR, not saying he agreed with him. And if "you're" going to call someone a "fucking idiot," make sure you spell "you're" and "where" right when you do it. P.S.: Punctuation and capitalization are your friend. Idiot.

Sorry, I apoligize for what was said a week ago apparently my younger brother that likes F-1 Racing was on here. I personally dont like racing to begin with. Please excuse him. and he definitely does need to learn to spell lol. Again, sorry about that.

Not only Gilles at his best, Arnoux at his best too.

Just the greatest duel in F1 history!
GirafaEmChamas 5 years ago
The only loser in that race is Jean-Pierre Jabouille because he scored the first win for a turbocharged car and no one remebers that. Most only remember the greatest scrap in F1 history.
Poor Jean-Pierre :(

Amazing, in a duel like that, there's no looser
