I think it's because of the personal space boundary ( about 6-8 inches, most Americans expect and respect.
Any touching of bodies is purely accidental.

Yes, but one comment Carol made was that you never get jostled in the crowd. We all move along like a school of fish it seems (that was my comment to his).
