I believe it's somehing like this:

The young woman is a composer who is writing her masterpiece: Divano. The man is another composer who knows that her work is way better then everything he ever made, thus it has to be destroyed. he steals it but before he can bring it up to destroy it Hitler's troops march into prague and there is a book burning and he has joined the SS as an officer and uses the evenmement to burn Divano. he fails and she recovers Divano.

Now see how she is wearing moaning clothes: she is moaning about the loss of her child the badtised kid in the beginning and the girl near the middle on the bridge (then we learn that she is dead). She dreams about meeting her lost child on that Prague bridge and apperrently she loses Divano again. After much searching she and he find out that divano will be sold. He is no time and nearly buys divano, but before the hammer falls she can over bid him and gains Divano.

Another possibilety is that she is also dead and that explains why divano is sold and is bought back by her ancestor aldough I don't know who that would be.
