Uh, did anyone catch the physics error? When the phaser was ejected, presumably it was through a port on the same bulkhead( shortest route) and so would have been ejected towards the direction Kirk was facing when he dropped it in the chute. The force of the explosion would have pressed against that bulkhead propelling the mass of the ship in the opposite direction. They would have been "thrown" against the bulkhead with the garbage chute, not against the opposite wall.

The evacuated that entire deck...but did they tell the guy in the garbage room to evacuate? Didn't think so.
