  • just love this !!!!

  • why only 4 minutes long...i miss it now.

  • this is #1 in my list of Getaway Driving All Time Tunes.

  • when i worked on railroad out of hoboken terminal there used to be a chick who was kind of a railroad groupie, i guess. anyhow, i took her down to the old ferry head-house (aptly named) and went at it on one of the old ferry bridges. upon finishing i hear applause. who knew the engineers crew room looked out on that slip. man, i couldnt show my face in terminal for months!.. ths tune ALWAYS reminded me of that night.

  • Yeah....love it. When i lived in london my flat was about 500yards from the 'waterline' (thames). Dire straits had a flat in Deptford about half a mile from my flat.

great song with a moody start. This takes me back, still, to times i had then.

This first album along with 'making movies' represents, for me, their highs. The only time he gets near this sort of rythym is on 'what it is'.

  • What a great band

  • does the phrase "playing a guitar like ringing a bell" come to anyone else when they listen to the MOST EXCELLENT MUSIC!!!

  • Very good song-smooth as hell!!

  • Best part of song...the whole FEELING of this change up section (and lead break of course!)......2:40

  • sht is deep..

  • With songs like these what was Rolling Stone mag thinking by not including Dire Straits in their 100 best of all time music artists list??

  • long live Mark knopfler

  • COWBOYYY BILLLYYYYYYYY

  • Voznja tramvajem kroz Beograd dok je jesen na pomolu... :))) Hvala vam!

  • superb

  • rock and roll hall of fame please.

    nothing less.

  • @MrKnightcastle at least songwriters and guitar players hall of fame, if not

  • Good Job Mr Knopfler...Brilliant Job!!!

  • one of the best ever!!!!

  • Hard to believe the Beastie Boys made it into the rock and roll hall of fame, but no Dire Straits, or Moody Blues. WTF

  • @dtennow

I totally agree. WTF. Don't get me started.

  • @dtennow LOL I didn't know that. Anyway Deep Purple isn't in the rarhof either, very unfair; but when I heard that Abba or Madonna were inducted, I couldn't believe it. I mean, no disrespect to Abba or the others, but I though HOF is for rock artists only.

  • @dtennow The Beastie Boys? Are you kidding me. Say it aint so.

  • Tis music to me hearing holes :o)

  • wish i had the biggest sound system of all time to show how i feel when i listen to this gold

  • @EsKe4201

    My thought exactly !!!

  • NO COMMENT other than TOTAL PERFECTION

  • ripped this and got my ring tone starting at 0:54 - shit hot

  • simply perfect!

  • i love how on EVERY video sum1 says this is my favorite song LOL

  • In this song Pick Withers play the drums like a master

  • Come si fa a mettere non mi piace!!

  • @AlessioSpeed2 Orecchie anali, si chiama così questa malattia.

  • anyone else gets an eargasm each time they ear the flanger on the rhytmn when it kicks in?

  • @plpicher do shiver bumps or levitation count? bet you havent got this one on a decent disc...

hm maybe even better on no disc..!

  • @jutubaeh Got it on Vinyl with a hell of a sound system.

  • One of my best albums that makes me feel very nostalgic. Reminds me of my record player....

  • Isto que é música!

  • I used to listen to this all night long..when you lifted that little arm on the record player, andit would play over and over..yep

  • "She can see him on the jetty where they used to go

She can feel him in the places where the sailors go

When she's walking by the river and the railway line

She can still hear him whisper

Let's go down to the waterline"

  • mark knopfler is the best !!!! (dire straits

  • Love this and the drumming ...he really pounds them

  • if you tube was there in 1978, THIS would have had 500 million views.....sigh....good technology comes too late....this song is special....got me into rock roll....

  • This first album was excellent.

But it didn't take long for Mark to relish being America's guitar king of MOR arena-rock and the smelly banks of Deptford Creek might as well have never existed.

  • Best song on the album and the one that got me to buy it.

  • what a way to tell a sad story, amazing lyrics.

  • Two people need to be drowned at the waterline

  • could play these rhythms all day, too sweet

  • amazing guitar...

  • the intro is so cool, so such a sense of foreshadowing!

  • Cold, foggy winter's night on the dimly lit steps leading down to the Quay Side in Newcastle. Weak light shining on wet cobbles - this song captures it all.

  • it is my favourite song... the best in the world i will say

  • i like it.

  • Absolutely one of my all time favorite tunes!

  • @somuchtoseeanddo It's one of my all time favourite albums, never mind just this song. The best Striats album of them all in my opinion. As the band got richer & more successful, I thought their work suffered. This first album has bite to it that the likes of brothers In Arms lacked.

  • @whitbyjet65 Thank god there is someone who think Brothers in Arms is overrated. Me personally I prefer their debut and Communique to any of their albums that came after the 70's. Dire Straits is like Queen they were at their peak in the 70's and lacked the guitar based songs in the 80's when cheesy synthesizers and keyboards overtake the market. They sound like a dance band in Brothers.

  • @TheGoldenPS1 Yeah they're later stuff is good, I give credit where it's due but like you my favorite albums are their first 3, classic late summer 70's stuff.

  • @isthisit4me BANG>>>BANG ur dead.

  • The best song on thier best album

  • The intro reminds me of being a cowboy about to duel an arch rival

  • @Isthisitforme How the hell can you remember that? Have you ever been a cowboy??

  • @mariodeadk i am not a cowboy but i like playing with cowgirls

  • Fucking Aye Mark, Your Guitar sounds so great ......

  • Guitar work is... just amazing ;)

  • I love when Mark says "Let's go down to the waterline... come on".

  • really cool mate!!

    And nice lyrics.

  • yep, that is how to play a Strat, wow was this really over 30 years ago?????

Where's pancake house? I'm hungry now ya know. Stuff like that and shit.

  • I have this Album i love it (i'm italian)

  • The beginning guitar intro is so magical and mysterious, ideal beginning for a fantastic album!

  • Sounds like Gilmour on his Strat at the beginning...God, I love that sound!

  • @lptomtom Indeed ;D

  • @lptomtom yes..., except Gilmour does not write songs.....

  • good stuff

  • soulful..genius

  • genius

  • sublime. roll a fat 1 and chill to this

  • I've never noticed this before but his vocal style is v. similar to Bob Dylan

  • @74Jupiter Dire Straits used to be the backing band for Dylan on a dew albums, including ''Blood on the Tracks''

  • @daddy12345 no, Mark played lead guitar on Slow Train Coming, and played and produced on Infidels, Bob's my god, Mark is also one of my gods, best guitarist ever.

  • great great band......without a doubt one of the best albums all time!!!!!!!

  • eargasm.

  • TY amin.!

  • 9:40 in the morning here. This made me crack a beer, light up a smoke and look at my guitar and realize although I will never be as good as Mark, his music will keep me striving for that perfect beautiful sound.

  • Knopflers technique is so tasty.......

  • @MyJohnny59

Makes me salivate more than eating a dozen greasy cheeseburgers with french fries and a root beer!

  • THIS was Dire Straits. It was a totally new guitar sound. Dunno what happened. Not that they turned bad, but they turned NORMAL.

  • @justjohnjj

  • Mark Knopfler...Sultan of Rock n Roll

  • @heavychevy631 ay-fuckin-men

  • cold hands/warm lips perfect

Come'on Mark, get the group together and give us some more!!

  • Rock Hall of Fame is a joke. Last I looked The Moody Blues weren't in either and yet there were a half a dozen C&W hacks in. Rock doesn't get much better than the way these guys do it.

  • I dont listen to this song since 1995, when I was five years old. Gave me the chills when the rhythm section kicks in.

  • mark knofler is one of the greatest who played with a guitar
