He encourages people to use one light (he uses Alienbees which are not sold at B&H), to buy used old stuff like a Canon 5D Mk I, to do the best they can with what they have and not run around with their credit card buying stuff they might not need...
B&H is a sponsor of this workshop, but it doesn't make it a weekend long commercial program.

If you learn to light with continuos lighting, you don't have that problem, learning to light with flash is like learning to paint with invisible ink
