@jnetusil exactly what were YOU listening to??? At the exact point before she stopped singing, right when she moved her fist at 4:51 she went a semi-tone above the intented note....and rly, what i did in my comment was praise her...but ppl with untrained eyes like yours, only see what they want to see in other ppl's comments....so sad...
wow! sumi jo going out of pitch on last note! didnt expect to witness this! But we wudnt be human without our bloopers right?! she's still head and shoulders above certain other "divas"
I think that there are many sopranos can do it, but no one do the biggest passage with legato, only Callas DO it, I think it must mean something, but she's a great-now I'm speaking about Sumi Jo-
I've listened to several different versions of this aria now, and they all seem to do something different with the end. In this one she almost seemed to perform a "coloratura scat." I'm not really able to find much about this piece--is the soprano directed to improvise at the end? And please, no snide comments. Yes, I'm a newbie.
I think the sopranos themselves choose how they improvise their coloratura at the end as a way of showcasing their talent! Ombres legeres provides an excellent way for the most talented sopranos to do this, however I'm not sure whats written in the score! Coloratura scat is a great way to describe it, but a cadenza would be the technical term. Another example would be Ardon gli incensi for Lucia's mad scene...Sills cadenza is soooo different from Callas!
her voice actually does suit light lyric roles like this quite well, but something she does a lot that i dont really like is that she likes to hold her last notes for a really long time, all the way until the orchestra cuts off. That kind of blew up in her face here, because her cut off after the orchestra stopped is really awkward and she went really sharp haha
What is this speculation about Sumi's technique? I think everyone who has any experience of classical singing can hear that her techinque is EXCELLENT!
Hey, it's so fun to watch the people behind Sumi! Their expressions... :D Especially the man who plays oboe or something like that on the right (in the middle) at 4:32. :D
Yeah, and Sumi's singing... Just enjoyable! Simple, pure and flexible voice, so natural! :)
ME MATO DE LA RISA CON ESTE COMENTARIO ,EN VERDAD ELLA ES UNA BUENA CANTANTE,NO LE DES TAN DURO ,TAL VES A TI TE GUSTE MAS Anna Netrebko ,PERO NO COMO CANTANTE,JAJAJJAA
this would be like the worst role ever for maria callas to be singing, her big harsh tone with wobbly unmusical vibrato is far from fitting for light lyric coloratura roles.
Nonsense. She sang the aria perfectly and I'm absolutely sure that She would do the whole part as well.. surely She was best in Norma, Medea or Lady Macbeth, because she had more dramatic voice but her coloratura technique was absolutely GREAT.
She's certainly able to sing it, but it's not my favorite on her voice. The tone is just too harsh for something that I find so...French. A lot of French stuff is VERY light which is certainly something that could never be applicable to Callas' voice.
@Iareto well i think the tones being harsh is probably the pronounciation. you have to understand, she is not french and probably doesn't even know the language. think about how incredibly hard it is to accurately sing something that isn't even your own language like this. either way, I thought the performance was great~
Callas herself made a very bold announcement saying that any light roles (i.e Butterfly in this case) should never be sung by her immense voice. (or did she say she deigned not to sing those roles ?) And I'm not going to assume you'd think Dinorah is dramatic, would you ?
She is, indeed, the best soprano ever!!! BRAVISSIMA!!!Thank god I`m not a soprano... It must be frustating to know that you (or any soprano) will never beat her! hehehehe
But as an "in love Sumi's fan": thank god she exists!!! :D
The voice-control is bad. Technique is worse. It seems that her voice doesn't feel this beautiful music. I ADVISE ALL OF YOU, TO LISTEN MARIA CALLAS:)
And I advise you to listen to Callas's late recordings where voice control was non-existent. ;). Really though, why listen to other videos if you're just going to say that Callas is better? If you can't see the beauty in other artists, then why watch other videos?
agreed, what really irritates me is how Callas fans are blindly fanatical about her, ignorantly professing her vocal superiority, when even in reality, she could never sing light French lyric roles like this tastefully, even before her voice started to decline (i.e., when she got thin and hot). Some of her later recordings are just aweful, on could drive a truck though her vibrato its so wide and slow and unmusical.
good is subjective, i would disagree, buts thats irrelevant. what is not subjective is that this role, and other french coloratura roles like it, necessitate lighter voices, callas is not a light instrument.
I like Sumi Jo but a young soprano named Erika Miklosa whose performance is available on youtube is much better in this aria.

I don't understand why everyone is in love with Maria...She's sings the notes correctly, yes, but her voice is just so...artificial.
I've always loved voices like Sumi Jo and Angela Gheorghiu. Fresh and beautiful voices.

Sumi - surely she is wonderful. But I wonder how someone who likes Sumi, can like Mrs Gheorghiu... anyway Callas is LA DIVINA. And always will be.
