A woman who is breastfeeding doesn't have any responsibility to the people around her, her only job is to feed her child. Anyone who is uncomfortable with public BF or who has a negative reaction to this has a responsibility to examine why they feel that way. It isn't the mom's fault you're having that reaction. I simply don't cover because I am not doing anything wrong, but ask my husband if someone can actually see anything at all? I simply don't need to take my whole breast out, but if I am in that situation and my baby is hungry I'll do it.
I always carry a light blanket with me in my diaper bag. That way NO ONE sees anything while I breastfeed in public. (but with this method, I always make sure my baby can breathe)
This is a debate nowhere but in the US. People who are nominally adult need to get over the idea that mammary glands are sex organs, or that feeding a child in public in a discreet way is remotely provocative. Is it only in the US where breastfeeding is "controversial"? I live in Canada and I see plenty of breastfeeding areas in shopping malls etc. I dont get why people are uncomfortable or offended by this... its not like its new or anything.
I breast feed my 6 months old and my 23 month old in public. I refuse to cover them up to feed. A blanket will go over their heads when they eat when everyone else starts putting a blanket over theirs.........if its inappropriate for 57% then maybe its time for an attitude adjustment. I totally agree with the guy in the blue shirt. If half the people in America are upset about it, it is probably the half that were never breastfed! I breastfed each of my three boys in public only when I had too and I am NOT a natural exhibitionist. I didn't just whip out the boob and stick it in the babys mouth. I did not know how discreet I am till i went to my WIC appt, while in the waiting area (under an August is national breast feeding month banner) I was nursing my son, who did not have a blanket over his head, when the lady called me to the desk. I told her i cant , she got little pissy asking me "why not" my husband looked her dead in the eye and pointed at the banner and said she is doing what ya'll recommend! She apologized , I wanted to laugh, but thought it would be in bad taste

I was the breast-feeding warrior when my daughter was a baby. With the huge amount of nursing clothing out in the market, there is no reason why a mother should feel uncomfortable feeding her child while out inpublic. That being said, there definately should be places where a mother can have privacy if that is more comfortable, which is afterall necessary for the milk to "drop". All this hoo-ha about public nursing is infantile.

From a breastfeeding mom: Thank you, not only were you guys fun, but you really made sense. It is hard to breastfeed in public, and I honestly think people should be for open to it. Asfar as covering thebaby as it nurses it not always a option. My daughter is 5 months and panics when shes covered, but with the nursing tops that fold down you don't see any of the breast. The baby's head is covering it, and generally thebaby's head is already in the position to nurse so you don't see anything.

But two years ago I was at the mall and this woman whipped her breast out so everyone could see then she proceeded to feed her child with her breast fully exposed to anyone walking by. Ladies, ever been to Macy's? Department stores in general? They make special ROOMS for nursing your baby. Big plush couches for mom to sit on, dimmed lights, and an overall quiet corner for mom to breastfeed discreetly in the privacy of the "women only" restroom. USE IT.

I'm currently nursing my 13 months old daughter (we believe in child led weaning), and we nurse in public. How am I to run errands and NOT breastfeed. I'm a supposed to tell my hungry or up set child that mommy can't comfort you right now, some people think it is obscene. I choose my child's needs over the insecurities of adults.

First of all, I am for breastfeeding in public. However, yesterday I saw a lady with a toddler sucking on her entirely bare breast on a department store bench right beside a ladies restroom (it was very clean had a nice separate room with a love seat apart from the toilets she could have used for feeding. People were blatantly starring at her. I just feel she is the kind of person who makes people squeamish a/b nursing in public. Do I have the wrong mentality about this?
Tough one. I personally think that nursing moms should be aware of other people's squeamishness, but that might make me a wuss. Maybe she should fight the power and sling that boob wherever she wants.
I think if more women breastfed in public it would not be such a big deal. It would just be normal. My kids have been around breastfeeding and they know that breasts are made for feeding the babies, they don't giggle about breasts, they think of them more scientificaly. My breasts are for my infant and if she's hungry, no matter where we are, she's going to eat and I'm not going to lock myself away in my house forever because people are so childish that they can't handle it.

I've been thinking the same thing! Stores like Babies r us and Motherhood Maternity have nursing places (not restrooms) for moms to go if they need some privacy. Especially in the early days when baby is learning to latch on, having a clean place to go would be a nice option. After latch on, less breast is visible than if I were wearing a low-cut shirt. This is including having rather large "girls"

Another thought: I think we (supporters of NIPing) should be careful when we stress a woman having to be discreet. That can mean very different things to different people. I'm Canadian and breastfeeding in public is not as big of a deal here. I honestly don't see the problem. My daughter was breastfed for about 9 months, often times in public. We aren't doing it for attention and it's done VERY descreetly, so descreetly, in fact, that most people can't even tell what's going on. And if you can tell, you're looking too closely at the woman's breasts, quite frankly. I really don't see the problem; everyone else is eating in the restaurant, why can't the babies?

I nursed six kids for a total of ten years, and I nursed in public, in the USA, and Europe. I never needed to expose my breast. I guess, if someone had been less than a foot away, and stared real hard, they might have gotten a brief glimpse, but if someone had done that, I would have gotten away from that person!
I did not usually nurse toddlers in public. It is more difficult to keep from being exposed with a toddler, and a toddler can wait until later, anyway.

@pineappledee its because America is filled with people that just can't be mature about it... you see sex everywhere. On tv and in music... this is disgusting sexual references. People freak out over a mom feeding her baby. I wouldn't necessarily do it in a diner or anything like that but if it is discreet.. there should be no problem.

Is it only in the US where breastfeeding is "controversial"? I live in Canada and I see plenty of breastfeeding areas in shopping malls etc. I dont get why people are uncomfortable or offended by this... its not like its new or anything.

I breast feed my 6 months old and my 23 month old in public. I refuse to cover them up to feed. A blanket will go over their heads when they eat when everyone else starts putting a blanket over theirs.........if its inappropriate for 57% then maybe its time for an attitude adjustment. Besides if you don't like watching women breastfeed people are free to look away.

I totally agree with the guy in the blue shirt. If half the people in America are upset about it, it is probably the half that were never breastfed! I breastfed each of my three boys in public only when I had too and I am NOT a natural exhibitionist. I didn't just whip out the boob and stick it in the babys mouth. Most women who do this in public usually, like me, have a blanket draped over the baby while feeding it.

Yea but usually thats the big deal. I totally don't have a problem with women breastfeeding in public as long as she isn't exposed. But I do hate that some women think that just because they have a baby that means they can just whip out their boob anywhere. Just as long as there is a blanket covering the womans breasts, then its totally cool. The babys gotta eat after all.

I did not know how discreet I am till i went to my WIC appt, while in the waiting area (under an August is national breast feeding month banner) I was nursing my son, who did not have a blanket over his head, when the lady called me to the desk. I told her i cant , she got little pissy asking me "why not" my husband looked her dead in the eye and pointed at the banner and said she is doing what ya'll recommend! She apologized , I wanted to laugh, but thought it would be in bad taste

I breastfeed my & month old baby in Public all the time, I did all my four kids, but I have never took my breast out and I make sure I cover myself, I Tried not to show anything as possible, I used a cover before I take it out..

I was the breast-feeding warrior when my daughter was a baby. With the huge amount of nursing clothing out in the market, there is no reason why a mother should feel uncomfortable feeding her child while out inpublic. That being said, there definately should be places where a mother can have privacy if that is more comfortable, which is afterall necessary for the milk to "drop". All this hoo-ha about public nursing is infantile.

Thanks for the video. I agree. Feeding your baby is so natural, it shouldn't be a question as to whether or not people are comfortable. People flock to Hooters to eat, don't they? You'll see way more breast there than when most moms breastfeed. They don't ask people who druel in public to leave because those around them are uncomfortable. I think EVERY human has the right to eat in public. Breastfeeding is so natural and it's the best thing for your baby. People really need to get a grip.

From a breastfeeding mom: Thank you, not only were you guys fun, but you really made sense. It is hard to breastfeed in public, and I honestly think people should be for open to it. Asfar as covering thebaby as it nurses it not always a option. My daughter is 5 months and panics when shes covered, but with the nursing tops that fold down you don't see any of the breast. The baby's head is covering it, and generally thebaby's head is already in the position to nurse so you don't see anything.

I totally agree with you. As long as they are discrete it is fine for a woman to breast feed in public. But two years ago I was at the mall and this woman whipped her breast out so everyone could see then she proceeded to feed her child with her breast fully exposed to anyone walking by. I did find that very disrespectful of everyone at the mall and woman like that are the ones that cause the outrage we hear about when it comes to woman breast feeding in public. she didnt evan try to be discrete

Ladies, ever been to Macy's? Department stores in general? They make special ROOMS for nursing your baby. Big plush couches for mom to sit on, dimmed lights, and an overall quiet corner for mom to breastfeed discreetly in the privacy of the "women only" restroom. USE IT.

My comments to anyone who has a problem with anyone who breast feeds in public regardless of whether they are showing the whole breast or not: If you don't like it, turn your head the other way. This is AMERICA and no one is FORCING you to look.

I'm currently nursing my 13 months old daughter (we believe in child led weaning), and we nurse in public. How am I to run errands and NOT breastfeed. I'm a supposed to tell my hungry or up set child that mommy can't comfort you right now, some people think it is obscene. I choose my child's needs over the insecurities of adults.
Note: if the baby is crying mom missed the earlier "hungary" Q's, and covering with a blanket is a red flag for nursing. A mom can latch in a child w/ no blanket.

First of all, I am for breastfeeding in public. However, yesterday I saw a lady with a toddler sucking on her entirely bare breast on a department store bench right beside a ladies restroom (it was very clean had a nice separate room with a love seat apart from the toilets she could have used for feeding. People were blatantly starring at her. I just feel she is the kind of person who makes people squeamish a/b nursing in public. Do I have the wrong mentality about this?

Tough one. I personally think that nursing moms should be aware of other people's squeamishness, but that might make me a wuss. Maybe she should fight the power and sling that boob wherever she wants.

I think if more women breastfed in public it would not be such a big deal. It would just be normal. My kids have been around breastfeeding and they know that breasts are made for feeding the babies, they don't giggle about breasts, they think of them more scientificaly. My breasts are for my infant and if she's hungry, no matter where we are, she's going to eat and I'm not going to lock myself away in my house forever because people are so childish that they can't handle it.

I was at uni working on an assignment with a partner (an older woman who had brought her child along). While we were working, the woman handed the child a banana, which the child peeled himself and ate. Afterwards, the child came and undid the mother's shirt and began to nurse. It made me very uncomfortable. Previously I did not have a problem, but now I do.

Great video. I'd also like to add, as to the breastfeeding in a resturant. I've not been to one yet that offers a nursing area for Mothers to take their children to nurse.
Give me a nice, clean (aka NON restroom area) to nurse my child and I'll be more than happy to go there to nurse instead. ;)

I've been thinking the same thing! Stores like Babies r us and Motherhood Maternity have nursing places (not restrooms) for moms to go if they need some privacy. Especially in the early days when baby is learning to latch on, having a clean place to go would be a nice option. After latch on, less breast is visible than if I were wearing a low-cut shirt. This is including having rather large "girls"

First I support public breast feeding. And it DOES NOT turn me on. But let's think of this. If 50% of the restaurant patrons don't want to see women breast feeding why should we hold their preference above others? What about the other half. If the other 50% want to (as in support) or wouldn't mind seeing public breast feeding why side with the 50% that are so sexually misinformed (or deranged) and prudish.

Another thought: I think we (supporters of NIPing) should be careful when we stress a woman having to be discreet. That can mean very different things to different people. If we support women BFing then it shouldn't matter if she is 'discreet' or not. I have never seen or heard of anyone who felt the need to be discreet while bottle feeding. Its about feeding the baby the best food possible, discreetness should be a matter of personal preference of the mother.

I'm Canadian and breastfeeding in public is not as big of a deal here. I honestly don't see the problem. My daughter was breastfed for about 9 months, often times in public. We aren't doing it for attention and it's done VERY descreetly, so descreetly, in fact, that most people can't even tell what's going on. And if you can tell, you're looking too closely at the woman's breasts, quite frankly. I really don't see the problem; everyone else is eating in the restaurant, why can't the babies?

Breastfeeding in public is mostly due beacause of an emergency feeding. I doubt these ladies are waiting for a normal feeding to leave the house to feed the baby. I mean these kids eat every two hours, sometimes you just cant make it home. My wife had to do it but it was very discreet.

I am a waiter in an LA rest. and i have seen many women take out their tits and feed their kids. I just want to say. I'm looking. I say, if they are upset that people dont want them to breastfeed around them and feels that they should be more tolerant. I say THEY should be more tolerant of their waiter getting a good look. An engorged breast in a restaraunt is a big tit in a restaraunt and im looking!
