Marketing decision. Brian's back: ZZZZZZ.... I've been on acid these past 39 years and I see through this. Not a mark for the Beach Boys, nor the Beatles, nor the DC5. So there!
Sadly, the Beach Boys were never for real. They were a group of kids called The Pendletones playing $15 gigs in San Diego. Surfing was becoming a popular sport at that time, so their abusive, domineering father forced them to change their name to "The Beach Boys" and sing songs about surfing. Except for Dennis, none of them surfed (Brian was actually afraid of the water) or even cared about the beach. It was all an act.

Out of all the Beach Boys, Mike Love is the least influential and should be the least likely to comment on the band. He's still around and he still has that arrogant disdain.....that irritating personality that made me dislike him from the very beginning. I think I would have made better music w/ the Beach Boys than Mike ever did.
@RetroAndrew I think it was Mike's tenancity ( and maybe his ego as well) that kept them going through all the bad years. I give him due credit for that.
@violetrod I'm no Mike Love fan but surely you have to be in awe of some of his great lyric writing. @johnrunion Check out the internal rhyme on: She's got her daddy's car and she's going to the hamburger stand now/She forGOT all abOUT the library like she told her old man now. Dylan makes one internal rhyme and you'd think the world of literature stopped in its tracks to listen to all the old raggedy Beat Poets sing his praises. I was a freshman in high school in 1961 when the Beach Boys hit the air waves. It was a very powerful movement here in Huntington Beach, ca. Wow! What a time! Surfing is still big here. Lots of guys are still surfing the beaches of Southern California!

Interesting comments in this clip. Does this mean that Brian and Mike have finally made peace again, after all these years. If so, well, great, man. But Brian always was, is, and always will be, the leader, the maestro behind the B.Boys phenomenon. It's a pity that the Boys couldn't keep up with Brian, from 1966 onwards. And how mystical is it that, after all of those 'demon' years of his, Brian has actually ended up outliving his 2 brothers by a long way. Guess it was just meant to be !!
in my room, surfer girl, please let me wonder, the lonely sun, don't worry baby, kiss me baby, she knows me too well, God only knows, wouldn't it be nice, let him run wild, girl don't tell me, the warmth of the sun...and so many others are not 'fun' songs. john
yeah, you are right. i was wrong. sorry. i just got carried away i guess! lol! but the lonely SUN would be a great companion piece to brian's newest masterpiece. john
I love these guys. They navigated through so, so many difficulties and the turbulent 60's, and they gave so much of themselves. If they've had to be fallible and human in public... to me, somehow that gives their body of work a little more meaning and substance. It's okay that they're not perfect; nobody is, anyway. Millions of people know all those words by heart. There must have been so many days when things were difficult and painful for them.
Love the group. What is nice is I've seen them in concert back in the early 70's (my very first concert). Then again in the 80's when they were not as popular. Now it seems they are back in style. All along the years they have been a great band. Now I enjoy the fact that my my kids (ages 16,13 and 9) enjoy the musical genius of Brian Wilson. But it would not be the same without Mike, Carl, Al, Dennis and Bruce.
Let's give some credit to Bruce Johnston as well.He was hired to be a stage backup guy and he ended up being a very valuable core member since late 65'.
Why does everyone love to attack Mike Love?It irritates me.He was the ambition behind Brian Wilson. He had a very cool voice and I like the dude. His cousin Brian is a talented genius, but Mike don't like the people around him.He has that right.Back off him.
I agree. After reading that new beach boys book I have come to the conclusion that Mike probably was a bit of a creative holdback (not denying the magnificant lyrics he wrote just that after the 60's he became a bit stilted)But he was the only BB trying to get rid of the bad croud that surrounded Brian.
Brutus, I agree completely.Mike is terrific.I saw them about 5 yrs ago..They are still great.I grew up loving these guys and have just about every pc of music they ever put out...I miss Carl and Dennis alot.
brutus: It was Brians younger brother carl who was the true ambition /inspiration behind the Beach Boys.. Mike Love is he one always sets himself up for the ridicule
but ,if it hadn't been for his voice& lyrics.. there wouldn't be a band called the Beach Boys
People attack Mike Love because he is an egotistical liar who sued Brian for millions wanting credit for work he did not do - also he was the person most vehemently against SMiLE and the birth of Brians creative vision and genius was nearly aborted (until he finally released it nearly 40 years later) because Love did not want to stray from the BB formula. His judging basically shut Brian's project and creativity down at that time. Then when Brian finally did release it - Love SUED him for it.
The pressure of the world, pressing high demand contacts which are necessary in music, and the tours left sometimes no time for pers. private time. what composers need, but somehow as we all can hear they would not be inspired to be together muchless would have Brian so elloquently written what he had. Brotherly fellowship and the variety of each members talent are a comfort and support a composer leans on from time to time. Only these fellas could make up the band:
Brutus... -- I agree with that except Mike -- he pushed in front of Carl in a very early tv performance -- he wanted that front spot early and eagerly -- and yes it takes more than one to make a group -- I just don't buy the Mike guy's motives. Just my opinion. Brian talk Carl to sing harmony when Carl was 8 and, I believe, Brian was 12. They were the glue that held them together. Again, in my opinion.
I feel bad for Dennis, why didn't anyone help him out when he was having a bad time? I think the drowning was a suicide, even his boat was in hock. What's wrong with people anyway?
Many people tried to help Dennis. If you to acknowledge that you have a drug & alcohol problem and want help. Dennis didn't commit suicide he just couldn't live with his demons.
Have you ever tried to help out a drug addict? I don't recommend it if you want to remain sane yourself. HELP has to come from the individual himself before any assistance you give can be fruitful. I was around at the time. It was an accident waiting to happen. Oh yes - and a bloody shame. As for those on this post who malign the others for whatever reason - get a life and let's see you do anywhere near as good - it's easy to throw stones from behind your anonimity.
your: no.. one would have to turn their back on the addict before the person can get help...( I know this, because I'm from a line of alcoholics& Helping my mother take care of my father before he died)
We ALL feel bad for Dennis. He had a disease: drug addiction. Dennis was severely abused by his dad as a child -- a recipe for later addiction. He was loved by many people who tried to help him, but the pain he was in overwhelmed everybody's best efforts. Dennis, we hardly knew ye.
I like the beach boys very much, and I feel badly for Dennis also. I disagree with you that drug addiction is a disease. It is not a disease but irresponsible behavior. Everyone alive has suffered some kind of abuse, that doesn't give us all the right to fry our brains on drugs (or alcohol).
If you investigate the topic of addiction, you'll see there's a huge body of research on the topic that says it is a disease. Doctors, psychologists & others who work with addicts all say that. You're right - everyone has suffered some abuse and not everyone is an addict. It's the degree of abuse (in Dennis's case, horrible) combined with physiology that makes the addict. From personal experience I know they're impossible to live with, but they're sick people, not irresponsible.
We all have choices. Dennis kept making choices that didn't help or serve him, including going out on the boat that fateful day. It's a shame, but it's the truth.
Cool song! By the Musical God named BRIAN WILSON!!!! Too bad Mike Love now inisists he is the Beach Boys and continues to go around singing Wilsons songs... Now that Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead. He can sing them all and claim he co-wrote it, hahaha what a joke! What a good strategy. What a "talented" person.
yeah whether we like Mike Love or not and I don't (!) he had his input and contributed a vital integral part of the overall sound that we love so much. As a guy of course, he's a flat out jerk
I say this because I never ssaw Al Jardine talk too much like Bruce Johnston does...when in truth and in fact Al Jardine is an original member with the Wilson brothers!!
his voice is classic and unmatchable, but his character and personality are terirble. he (unsuccessfully) tried to stop pet sounds, and SUCCESSFULLY halted work on SMiLE. i have no reason to like him. at all.
In spite of Mike Love's nasally and rather mediocre baritone, Brian did succeed in making a silk purse out of a sow's ear in, e.g., "That's Note Me", "California Girls", etc.
I love the Beach Boys, all of their songs put a smile on my face :)

in my room, surfer girl, please let me wonder, the lonely sun, don't worry baby, kiss me baby, she knows me too well, God only knows, wouldn't it be nice, let him run wild, girl don't tell me, the warmth of the sun...and so many others are not 'fun' songs. john

Did you mean "The lonely SEA"? :)

yeah, you are right. i was wrong. sorry. i just got carried away i guess! lol! but the lonely SUN would be a great companion piece to brian's newest masterpiece. john

the beatles were not about love; despite what the media has brain washed many into thinking. the beatles were about hedonism.
jhrunion 3 years ago
there is much, much more to the music of brian wilson and the beach boys than 'fun.' john

Wishing Brian gentle and happy days :-)

Haunting, brilliant melody, recorded the evening of Nov. 22 1963-that day Kennedy was shot.

BrutusMcCrunch 4 years ago
I agree. After reading that new beach boys book I have come to the conclusion that Mike probably was a bit of a creative holdback (not denying the magnificant lyrics he wrote just that after the 60's he became a bit stilted)But he was the only BB trying to get rid of the bad croud that surrounded Brian.
williamjaba 4 years ago
not only Brian ,but Dennis also, william
especially when Dennis wsilson befriended the manson family
Freyja1313 3 years ago
Try to get it right though. Dennis was investigated by the F.B.I and was found to have no idea what this cult was capable of.

Freyja1313 4 years ago
BrutusÆ itøs because hesetes himself up for ridicule...I never thought of Mike love as a lead singer, but a background vocalist-lyricist
Freyja1313 3 years ago

BEACH BOYS

Carl and Brian WERE the BEACH BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ncarolinaluv 4 years ago
No,idiot.
How about Al Jardine?Dennis Wilson?Mike Love?Bruce Johnston?
That's why it is called a band.Brian is genius, sure, but he wouldn't have gone anywhere by himself.
BrutusMcCrunch 4 years ago

ZIPPTPH77 4 years ago
Many people tried to help Dennis. If you to acknowledge that you have a drug & alcohol problem and want help. Dennis didn't commit suicide he just couldn't live with his demons.
DefMode66 4 years ago 3
Yes,def... Dennis wilson had demons... but,his main demon was a cnild hood of physical abuse
Freyja1313 4 years ago 3
Have you ever tried to help out a drug addict? I don't recommend it if you want to remain sane yourself. HELP has to come from the individual himself before any assistance you give can be fruitful. I was around at the time. It was an accident waiting to happen. Oh yes - and a bloody shame. As for those on this post who malign the others for whatever reason - get a life and let's see you do anywhere near as good - it's easy to throw stones from behind your anonimity.
yourtubeatlas 4 years ago
your: no.. one would have to turn their back on the addict before the person can get help...( I know this, because I'm from a line of alcoholics& Helping my mother take care of my father before he died)

We ALL feel bad for Dennis. He had a disease: drug addiction. Dennis was severely abused by his dad as a child -- a recipe for later addiction. He was loved by many people who tried to help him, but the pain he was in overwhelmed everybody's best efforts. Dennis, we hardly knew ye.
caraphyllis 4 years ago
I like the beach boys very much, and I feel badly for Dennis also. I disagree with you that drug addiction is a disease. It is not a disease but irresponsible behavior. Everyone alive has suffered some kind of abuse, that doesn't give us all the right to fry our brains on drugs (or alcohol).
directsci 4 years ago
If you investigate the topic of addiction, you'll see there's a huge body of research on the topic that says it is a disease. Doctors, psychologists & others who work with addicts all say that. You're right - everyone has suffered some abuse and not everyone is an addict. It's the degree of abuse (in Dennis's case, horrible) combined with physiology that makes the addict. From personal experience I know they're impossible to live with, but they're sick people, not irresponsible.
caraphyllis 4 years ago
We all have choices. Dennis kept making choices that didn't help or serve him, including going out on the boat that fateful day. It's a shame, but it's the truth.

Cool song! By the Musical God named BRIAN WILSON!!!! Too bad Mike Love now inisists he is the Beach Boys and continues to go around singing Wilsons songs... Now that Carl and Dennis Wilson are dead. He can sing them all and claim he co-wrote it, hahaha what a joke! What a good strategy. What a "talented" person.
qazwsx12369 4 years ago
yeah whether we like Mike Love or not and I don't (!) he had his input and contributed a vital integral part of the overall sound that we love so much.
