in my karate "bushi-kai" a derivative of wado ryu we do the strike to the centre of the chest at the solar plexus. That way it has greater effect on the attacker, but hurts more - hence why i dislike this kihon.
As I understand it, the strike is meant to break the opponents balance as he kicks (as well as hurt him, if you hit the neck instead). So in your version the strike is similar to wado's kihon kumite 3?
sorry, i misunderstood the video. we do it the same as shown here. the part that threw me was the "strike to the inside of the neck". we have never been taught to strike to the neck (because it is so dangerous) but instead of striking the "hard part of the chest", we aim for the centre where it is softest (unless your fighting a girl - in that case it is to teh shoulder). my mistake sorry
