I agree with her, they are real kilts and real tartans, any highland dancer knows that. and sorry i just had to agree with what was being said my MissDavidsonBabyyx.
Sorry, I was going to correct what you said on the film but it looks like most people have! But there is one point ill say, Sometimes a dancer will see another dancer in an outfit they like and so when its time for them to get a new oufit.. thats the colour theyll choose. Or, some dancers get intence reds and blues in order to get noticed.. hope this helps :]
the white background is so the BLACK ghillie (dance shoes) can be more easily seen by the judges... they ARE also a tad bit less distracting as the traditional or modern tartans, the dancers look more uniform with the white backgrounds... NOW you CAN still wear the traditional tartans it's just generally considered a disadvantage as the judges can't see the intricate footwork as easily as with the dress tartans. you're more likely to see the traditional tartans in the pre-premier levels though.
old alister, highland dancing kilt's are real kilts, made form real tartan, they are based on a white background (dance tartans) which is the only difference. dance tartans come in all different colours and many are named, i.e Cunningham dance tartan. Sorry but i had to comment as what you were saying was untrue!
The point has been made by other commentators and is well taken. As a Scot who used to wear a Campbell kilt (until my waistline expanded!) I was influenced by my experience of the heavy MALE kilt and assumed wrongly that the girls' kilts were inferior imitations.
They have the dancers use the white Dress background and the rules are VERY strict. The only creative outlet for dancers is the Choreography, and the Dance teachers hate it because they don't really have a say as to its content. That is what my daughter loves most so her teacher won't teach her. There for no other teacher will teacher will either so she dances for everyday entertainment and makes it exciting again. Take a look at one of her choreography's.
Thanks to OldAlistair for posting this. The commentary was helpful, too. I hadn't seen Scottish dancing before, only Irish, which is significantly different, even the attire. This was a real education for me. :)
I liked your video;higher calibre dancers.I danced in the 60's,and kilts were not all Dress tartans then;entire dancing dress is very specific now;even hair is mandated.I would NEVER want the old full outfits back, but, ancient tartans, for example, would add some interest,as many dancers look the same.MacLeod is no longer seen, and, most of the tartans I knew as a dancer. Even the small lace at the wrist cuffs is gone.

I was referring to the competition dancing, as this is, the participants have no freedom to express their own individuality. As the commentary seems to suggest; blandness rules.
I'm not sure why people gave this thumb's down. Yes, like most folk dancing of this kind, there is a good amount of order that can make it seem a little drab. But, I have to agree with craigowl. There wasn't all that much spirit, here. No Scottish bite, you know? What Craig said wasn't spam, either. He was providing criticism of a cultural practice that has definately changed significantly, and he doesn't agree with it. No harm, no fowl.
These are all real tartans, but yes, they are mostly made for highland dancing because they have more white in them, See my moms kilt was a dress stewart tartan but it had a white background- so it was a DRESS stewart- most highland dancing tartans are real tartans just dress tartans
nobody knows what real tartans look like modern and clan tartans were invented by a couple of polish con men in the 1800s after tarten had been illegal for decades
Hey HighlandChris - if these are real Tartans - which Clans are they from? I don't count "Dress" as "real" because they are only worn for shows etc and are about as real as the costumes worn in plays.
Tartans are not necessarily from clans. Families and Districts also have tartans. The historical tartans tartans are muted in colour, this is largely due to the technology available at the time. i.e. heather, berries and such like were used for dying the yarn. These dress tartans have evolved as the methods have.
Actually Chris, if you look at the "ancient" and "modern" kilts offered by the kilt makers you will see that "ancient" are often much brighter than "modern". By the way, I prefer heavyweight for dancing rather than medium - it is less exposive when doing reels and jigs (swings better too).
Can I ask? What are your qualifications to make such judgements?
These are very much real tartans. And also, these are medium weighted materials. The Jackets are made to match the kilts, not the other way around as is mentioned at around 2.20
I retired from national dancing when I was about 10, in 1955.. we used to wear a hat with a huge feather and brooch on it.. as well as a plaid with a huge brooch. .. for the little ones, the kilt would be on its way up, when the child was on its way down.. much heavier than these ones.. with layers and layers of lace bodice, and lace cuffs..
LOL - comments on video are funny!! I guess they dont look very colourful to the traditionalist. But to us dancers, if they are too colourful then we DONT WEAR THEM! lol
I love this video...we're not allowed to film at most comps so can't get any.
By the way, to the guy talking about the tartans...these are real tartans, they are just Dress Tartans (ie. they have a white background) - most dancers will have a dress tartan now as they make you stand out more on stage

Most modern day tartans were invented in the 19/20th Centuries and continue to be so.
