I feel like the condoms at the end of the episode signify the reason for why the girl was suicidal, she was a mistake and therefore probably abandoned or something, which is why she says she doesn't want to be alone. The old man is suicidal because he probably has lung cancer or something from smoking cigarettes and has to take daily pills, and the other man is suicidal because he's homosexual and something probably happened to his lover.
@sonichedgh0g, they're there for two things. First, the title is always SOMEWHERE in the episode itself. Second, you can't kill yourself if you're dead, just like you can't plan or have a family by using condoms.
@GaaraCreed i think if i'm not mistaken it was at the construction yard... when the took the pills... they just didn't realize that they're dead already/..
No one will never figure out how they died. I had expected them to have survive. After seeing the three without shadows, they turn out to be dead. We will never know how they died. The fun part of this episode is enjoying seeing how they interact.
The three are now ghosts who seem to appear to most people as normal people. Even if they realized that they are dead, they will continue to haunt the Earth as long as they don't try to harm other people.
@sieyk In terms of the whole body texture shadow thing; I just figured that unlike regular shadows, which impact the normal world for living people to see, those shadows only help reflect themselves to other paranormals. Just like the last pill, they see what they expect to see, not what's real. Just a theory really, and I suspect a little inspiration from the Sixth Sense. lol
"Happy Family Planning" simply means condoms in Japan, because they can be used to control the timing of birth and adjust the number of kids. Also, it suggests that these lonely people finally made a happy (pseudo)family after they died.
Umm... it ended with "Happy Family" & Zebra's gay (& from the locket) maybe he'd enjoy acting as the mom, so it's like they're dead... this's the most mentally stimulating anime I've EVER seen. I hope whoever created this won something for it. (Even if is a mind fuck.)
as usual, the comments section makes me lose faith in humanity. When the old man realized they weren't casting shadows it was like "holy crap! they're dead!" and I felt dumb I hadn't noticed it before. But there are loads of people who saw it all and *still* didn't figure it out. And some who don't even get it after reading comments D: D: We are inching closer to idiocracy
If you look for their shadows, you can pretty much figure out when they died. They still have them when Kamome chases the guys through the park near episode's beginning. They don't have them while walking along the sidewalk during part to, in the train station, or any time after that. It's possible they all died from their first attempt from the sleeping pills and carbon monoxide poisoning.
At around 1:05, Fuyubachi, the old man, realizes they're all dead. His first indication seems to be the fact that he still has the last pill, even though he already took it. He then realizes they're not casting shadows. A few hints: Zebra sees the man walk away from a very definitive suicide; they all see they're friend Fox, aka Makoto, as Lil' Slugger, even though he already died in his cell; and finally their appearance as ghosts in the photograph taken at the end.
If you hadn't explained this, I'd probably still be thinking of this episode 40 years from now going "What the F*CK was the point?! Why would you insert an episode like that into the middle of a series?!?!"
@scarycatsscaringcats wow, youre a genius! i never thought about that, and what you said makes it more creepy... so when did they die? or were they already dead to begin with?
@scarycatsscaringcats but how would they have broken the branch when they were attempting to hang themselves? And are you presuming that they died in the abandoned building then?
The condom machine says happy famly planning? now why would it say that condoms are supposed to stop you from having babies right? its a way of saying you cant kill yourself if your already dead. You cant expect a baby if you keep fucking with a condom.

yea you're right it's a metaphor..the title of this episode is "Happy Family Planning" which is wat it saids at the end saying tat u cant plan to have a family wif condoms just like u cant die if you're already dead
i read all comments of you, if I didn't i think i wouldn't understand very much now, but it's the first episode I watched from this anime maybe it's got to do something with that. I will watch the other episodes. Think this is very entertaining.
I am not sure what this episode is about, ether the possible, the ending, or the circumstance. But it defenately has something to do with the fact that they liked Lil Slugger, but he refused to "help" them. But it is happy that in the end they continue in theyre 'Paradise'
You know, I never noticed the missing shadows until after the scoop digger tore the building down on top of the trio. Very clever. This series is brilliant.
I remember this episode and it was my favorite too. The Happy Family Condoms Extra Thin, threw me off as well. You can't commit suicide after your dead. You also can't prevent a family while using extra thin condoms. Man, I love the use of imagery, metaphors, and symbolism in this episode!!!
OMG--why didn't I notice they were dead the first time!! I'm thinking that they actually never really existed, since they show the vending machine at the end. Maybe they would have existed except for the "Happy Family" condoms . . .
Yeah, I think they really died when they breathed the carbon monoxide and took sleeping pills. In fact I'm sure of it, because they all had shadows when they first met in real life. It's never stated explicitly why they want to kill themselves, but I'm guessing it's because they're lonely and rejected from society. Kamome yells "Don't ever leave me alone!", Zebra has a picture of his ex-boyfriend, and Fuyubachi may have health issues.
Fox is the imitator of lil slugger and was killed in his holding cell by the "real" one. The chat room is a flashback of conversations they had online before they met for their suicide pact.
this show is sooo intelegent, it makes me angry because all american cartoons are, is getting more and more stupid. and japanese cartoons are just getting better and better... "SIGH" oh well, guess i have to stick with anime. :)
They didn't die from the monoxide poisoning they died from the construction watch when they are lying on the ground no shadows itd also explain how the girl would die, the ultra thin condoms is an analogy to how precious life is think about it neither of the three can give live an old man a small child and a gay guy hint hint
It seems suicide is prominent in many peoples' lives. You'd think they'd be extremely depressed or something. Either that or like some people having a twised curiosity of death.
its a satirical look at how affluence and social isolation is driving us to suicide. Its very ironic. These people are lonely, and want to kill themselves because they have no one. But they're meeting together with other people just like them, only to off themselves (even though they have what they need!)...this is real. ppl in japan meet online and form suicide pacts.
Whoa... I didn't understand this episode at ALL when I first saw it! I had to read about it on wikipedia! That's when I actually figured out why the old guy was freaking out... lol...
haha i watched it one night at a hotel, then had to wait til adult swim replayed everything so i could watch it again. i kind of understood it then, but then i also bought the dvd's and everytime i watch it, i notice something different!
this episode is the most meaningful to me. it reminds of the news i've heard from japan. there are in reality a lot of people to search other ones in chats to plan a meeting. and there to commit suicide together. it is a sad thing. but the japanese have black humor too, haven't they? this ep was so black humored i couldn't so anything at some minutes. ...
I'm not exactly sure the meaning at the end, but I do know that my lowest point, some aspect of this episode, along with a few other things, kept me from fulfilling the same goal as its characters. Why? A part of me was like that girl, who's fascination with the world and innocence somehow kept screwing up the plans of the other 2. Perhaps such a person is inside all of us, and perhaps that's a very good thing.
OMFG EVEN AFTER READING THESE COMMENTS I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND! Me and thegreenjelousy watched this episode at my house and we played the end over and over again. WE STILL DONT HAVE AN ANSWER!! GAH!! ::lil' slugger knocks me out:: stfu...
Title Appearance: At the very end of the episode, the camera pans to a vending machine selling "Happy Family Planning" extra-thin condoms. Given the Paranoia Agent's social commentary, this may be a comment on the low birth rate in Japan. It's just as likely that it's an existential metaphor--just as you cannot commit suicide when you're already dead, you cannot conceive a family while using condoms.
they were alive in the beginning look for their shadows i think they died in the old building, the one time they diddnt actually try to commit suicide
Maybe there lives were ruined as a result of defective condoms? Did anyone think of that? Lets say the girl was born unexpectedly and therefore her parents did not want to keep her. The gay man..well he most likely transmitted the disease from gay sex. The Old man, may have sexualy transmitted the disease at an earlier age and the pills were his perscription.
i wasn't really paying attention to this episode, how the one true thing that let me knoe they were dead was when the girls took a photograph and were horrified by wat they saw
Okay, here's the deal, the 3 are already dead, fox was the lil' slugger double, and horse is the detective that lost his mind finding out that lil' sluger isn't human. also, please post the next episode!
Stopping Life (Family Planning Condoms) - Starting Death (The Family of Ignorant Suicidal Ghosts) Moral? None are within mortal grasp. They cannot be forced. All in all, the makeshift family were content in their never-ending search for death, this was the conundrumatic solution to their collective problems of their former lives: loneliness.
Xiales, I'm so confused. So is bat boy a ghost, ay mi cabeza. And what do the condoms have to do with anything...condoms...family planning...mmmmm, interesting.
Did they ever say lil slugger became a ghost? No, just their acquantiance, Fox, in the chat room was killed. The condoms though, well, it's stupid to think you can prevent having children with an extra-thin condom, right? Just like them trying to kill themselves when they are already dead is completely foolish. The last pill that he had was a sign
When made you think lil slugger was a ghost? Didn't they just say that Fox, their internet acquiantance, was killed by lil slugger? Keep watching to clear up who, or what, lil slugger really is.
The whole condom thing, from the way I see it, is that it's stupid to think that an extra-thin condom will prevent you from having a family. (Notice how the three of them became a "family" of sorts. This compares to just how foolish it is to try and kill yourself when you are already dead.
Okay then chica, so this bat boy, is he real or not? Man this sounds like philosophy class jejeje. Also, if these three people were dead, how were they able to see bat boy? How was he able to see them? Think about it eh.
Lil Slugger is semi-real. He is a figmit of imagination by someone who is very paranoid. The three are already dead. They were able to see him because Lil Slugger isnt really real. More like a standing shadow. Vise versa for lil slugger.
now...they are not dead...lil slugger couldn't attack them because they wanted to be dead ...lil slugger is a methapore for...you must find out yourself
throughout the show they make it just a little more appearent that they are dead with the whole shadow thing. in the end of this part when the old man is just figuring out that they are dead it shows a close up of his and the girls feet and earlier them walking next to the shadow of a fence and in all three cases them not casting a shadow, hence his saying "dillusion".
though the condom part and him repetitivley taking the last pill has me baffled
The last pill almost seems like the medicine for he to stay dellusional, a sign that he's always going to be in this cycle of trying to achieve an impossible death. At the end, it certainly doesn't seem like he feels the full impact of knowing that he is figuratively going nowhere as they depart for a new trip.
ya this is a really confusing show. im seein comments here saying there already dead? i dont understand how everyone knos that. its jus me whos confused. lol. but y is the old guy takin pills then? idk. and the condoms thing at the end confused the crap outta me lol. anyone who can help me out here, tell me please lol
O.O WOW! I NEVER ACTULLY RELIZED THEY WERE ALREADY DEAD! Well, I've already seen the entire series, but I'm still apperintly learning more. Thats just cool. And I feel bad for shounen bat, AKA Lil' Slugger. That must have been annoying. xD Falling on his butt half way down the stares, and prolyl thinking "This is my worst job yet!"
From Wiki. At the very end of the episode, the camera pans to a vending machine selling "Happy Family Planning" extra-thin condoms. Given the Paranoia Agent's social commentary, this may be a comment on the low birth rate in Japan. It's just as likely that it's an existential metaphor--just as you cannot commit suicide when you're already dead, you cannot conceive a family while useing condoms
Possibly the thin condems represent how so many living people live a shallow life, of no substance and all they care about are trivial things like sex without love. Also displayed by the fact that these dead people are living far more evventful lives than most of the living fools. Perhaps there reasons to commiting suicide is because they already wasted there lives, and beign dead, they perhaps beleive dieing again would bring them back, letting them start a new
Lil' Slugger is a demon I think so he is not necessarily dead, but that explains why he could see them. But did he run because they confused him or because they were ghosts?
They didn't cut the scene. There's actually different explanations to how she died. The bridge is one of them and another is that she died from the carbon monoxide like the other two (it takes less poison to kill a smaller person). But it's never actually said when she dies.
when they were running away from the little girl they were alive... when they inhaled that crap thats when they died... so the girl obviousl;y died sometike after they lost her... and nobody said lil slugger is "dead"
but when they were running away from the little girl they did have shadws and lil' slugger had a shadow when they are chasing him you can see it so he is not dead
when they were in the the hot spring boys and girls arent supossed to be in the same room together.. they call that being a pervert. now the lady did stop, but that was just a coinsidence, another is when the two maids stoped from goin down the stairs.
its not a coinsidence because it's an animation. i dont understand though because the two maids wait for them to pass but the maid on the right's head follows slugger but the one on the left moves her head when the others go by
As with the photograph, ghosts are not entirely 'not there', they just aren't alive. Ever heard of a wind or cold breeze brushing past and some say it's an unrested soul? Also, Slugger isn't dead. He wasn't alive to begin with. Where as our trio, were alive, but are now apparently dead.
I have never in my life seen a set of people that were happy trying to get themselves killed.

@moyoboy At the beginning they had shadows, namely were alive.
First Kamome died alone. That's why Zebra and Fuyubachi didn't notice her when they tried to commit suicide at the building.
Then they both died too, so they got a call from Kamome.

I am not sure what this episode is about, ether the possible, the ending, or the circumstance. But it defenately has something to do with the fact that they liked Lil Slugger, but he refused to "help" them. But it is happy that in the end they continue in theyre 'Paradise'
MJoubes 4 years ago
You know, I never noticed the missing shadows until after the scoop digger tore the building down on top of the trio. Very clever. This series is brilliant.

I remember this episode and it was my favorite too. The Happy Family Condoms Extra Thin, threw me off as well. You can't commit suicide after your dead. You also can't prevent a family while using extra thin condoms. Man, I love the use of imagery, metaphors, and symbolism in this episode!!!
Nioriex 4 years ago 3
OMG--why didn't I notice they were dead the first time!! I'm thinking that they actually never really existed, since they show the vending machine at the end. Maybe they would have existed except for the "Happy Family" condoms . . .
ayv18doz 4 years ago
Yeah, I think they really died when they breathed the carbon monoxide and took sleeping pills. In fact I'm sure of it, because they all had shadows when they first met in real life. It's never stated explicitly why they want to kill themselves, but I'm guessing it's because they're lonely and rejected from society. Kamome yells "Don't ever leave me alone!", Zebra has a picture of his ex-boyfriend, and Fuyubachi may have health issues.

OoO so yeah those 3 are probley ghost...like when they took the picture with those peeps they all were screaming omg xD

Freaky. I love this show.

Hey guys. Notice that the three persons don't have a shadow from the very beginning which implies they were all dead at the beginning.
BTW, who is FOX? What does the chat room imply?
rodin62 4 years ago
Fox is the imitator of lil slugger and was killed in his holding cell by the "real" one. The chat room is a flashback of conversations they had online before they met for their suicide pact.
Method2k5 4 years ago 3
i missed the idea, y did they want to commit suicide in all 3?

They didn't die from the monoxide poisoning they died from the construction watch when they are lying on the ground no shadows itd also explain how the girl would die, the ultra thin condoms is an analogy to how precious life is think about it neither of the three can give live an old man a small child and a gay guy hint hint

yeah, good point... what a great show.

what is with the condom at the ending that always puzzled me when i saw it
ANDREWZAMORA123 4 years ago
It seems suicide is prominent in many peoples' lives. You'd think they'd be extremely depressed or something. Either that or like some people having a twised curiosity of death.
DKFan4Life 4 years ago
the old man has some disease and hes gonna die anyway... probly or hes just looking for an easy way out

Japanese peaple are killing themselfs thirty thousand people every year.
this is so sad.
nack1228 4 years ago
its a satirical look at how affluence and social isolation is driving us to suicide. Its very ironic. These people are lonely, and want to kill themselves because they have no one. But they're meeting together with other people just like them, only to off themselves (even though they have what they need!)...this is real. ppl in japan meet online and form suicide pacts.
jmugwump 4 years ago 2
people everywhere do it. it's really sad

haha i watched it one night at a hotel, then had to wait til adult swim replayed everything so i could watch it again. i kind of understood it then, but then i also bought the dvd's and everytime i watch it, i notice something different!
kekisme 4 years ago
this episode is the most meaningful to me. it reminds of the news i've heard from japan. there are in reality a lot of people to search other ones in chats to plan a meeting. and there to commit suicide together. it is a sad thing. but the japanese have black humor too, haven't they? this ep was so black humored i couldn't so anything at some minutes. ...
failad 4 years ago
I'm not exactly sure the meaning at the end, but I do know that my lowest point, some aspect of this episode, along with a few other things, kept me from fulfilling the same goal as its characters. Why? A part of me was like that girl, who's fascination with the world and innocence somehow kept screwing up the plans of the other 2. Perhaps such a person is inside all of us, and perhaps that's a very good thing.
whotookchemgod 4 years ago
ok people they died in the building! that is why none of the construction workers yelled or said anything to them!

Title Appearance: At the very end of the episode, the camera pans to a vending machine selling "Happy Family Planning" extra-thin condoms. Given the Paranoia Agent's social commentary, this may be a comment on the low birth rate in Japan. It's just as likely that it's an existential metaphor--just as you cannot commit suicide when you're already dead, you cannot conceive a family while using condoms.
soonpker 5 years ago
uhu,exactly...a metaphor
what kon is using constantly in this series, the whole thing itself is a metaphor
SatoMiyaKon 5 years ago
they were alive in the beginning look for their shadows i think they died in the old building, the one time they diddnt actually try to commit suicide
bladehighwind 5 years ago
Maybe there lives were ruined as a result of defective condoms? Did anyone think of that? Lets say the girl was born unexpectedly and therefore her parents did not want to keep her. The gay man..well he most likely transmitted the disease from gay sex. The Old man, may have sexualy transmitted the disease at an earlier age and the pills were his perscription.
essej 5 years ago 4
WOW I never thought of that!!! OMG that's an entirely different and literal way of looking at things! could be! I like literal things

i wasn't really paying attention to this episode, how the one true thing that let me knoe they were dead was when the girls took a photograph and were horrified by wat they saw
AznZiShu 5 years ago
Okay, here's the deal, the 3 are already dead, fox was the lil' slugger double, and horse is the detective that lost his mind finding out that lil' sluger isn't human. also, please post the next episode!

Stopping Life (Family Planning Condoms) - Starting Death (The Family of Ignorant Suicidal Ghosts) Moral? None are within mortal grasp. They cannot be forced. All in all, the makeshift family were content in their never-ending search for death, this was the conundrumatic solution to their collective problems of their former lives: loneliness.
habika 5 years ago
Xiales, I'm so confused. So is bat boy a ghost, ay mi cabeza. And what do the condoms have to do with anything...condoms...family planning...mmmmm, interesting.
MaliciaMiseria 5 years ago
Did they ever say lil slugger became a ghost? No, just their acquantiance, Fox, in the chat room was killed. The condoms though, well, it's stupid to think you can prevent having children with an extra-thin condom, right? Just like them trying to kill themselves when they are already dead is completely foolish. The last pill that he had was a sign
nevica 5 years ago
When made you think lil slugger was a ghost? Didn't they just say that Fox, their internet acquiantance, was killed by lil slugger? Keep watching to clear up who, or what, lil slugger really is.
The whole condom thing, from the way I see it, is that it's stupid to think that an extra-thin condom will prevent you from having a family. (Notice how the three of them became a "family" of sorts. This compares to just how foolish it is to try and kill yourself when you are already dead.
nevica 5 years ago
Okay then chica, so this bat boy, is he real or not? Man this sounds like philosophy class jejeje. Also, if these three people were dead, how were they able to see bat boy? How was he able to see them? Think about it eh.
MaliciaMiseria 5 years ago
Lil Slugger is semi-real. He is a figmit of imagination by someone who is very paranoid. The three are already dead. They were able to see him because Lil Slugger isnt really real. More like a standing shadow. Vise versa for lil slugger.
NorikoRoseThorn 5 years ago
If he's just a shadow, then the ghosts shouldn't have been able to see him then. They couldn't even see their own shadows cuz they were already dead.
MaliciaMiseria 5 years ago
now...they are not dead...lil slugger couldn't attack them because they wanted to be dead ...lil slugger is a methapore for...you must find out yourself
SatoMiyaKon 5 years ago
throughout the show they make it just a little more appearent that they are dead with the whole shadow thing. in the end of this part when the old man is just figuring out that they are dead it shows a close up of his and the girls feet and earlier them walking next to the shadow of a fence and in all three cases them not casting a shadow, hence his saying "dillusion".
though the condom part and him repetitivley taking the last pill has me baffled
kerflop 5 years ago
The last pill almost seems like the medicine for he to stay dellusional, a sign that he's always going to be in this cycle of trying to achieve an impossible death. At the end, it certainly doesn't seem like he feels the full impact of knowing that he is figuratively going nowhere as they depart for a new trip.
nevica 5 years ago
I wonder if the cutout scene of the girls attempt is on the DVD? if so hopefully someone can upload it
stuppletrax 5 years ago
ya this is a really confusing show. im seein comments here saying there already dead? i dont understand how everyone knos that. its jus me whos confused. lol. but y is the old guy takin pills then? idk. and the condoms thing at the end confused the crap outta me lol. anyone who can help me out here, tell me please lol
ryot44 5 years ago
MagmaShinya 5 years ago
Feldy 5 years ago
Possibly the thin condems represent how so many living people live a shallow life, of no substance and all they care about are trivial things like sex without love. Also displayed by the fact that these dead people are living far more evventful lives than most of the living fools. Perhaps there reasons to commiting suicide is because they already wasted there lives, and beign dead, they perhaps beleive dieing again would bring them back, letting them start a new
Feldy 5 years ago
Lil' Slugger is a demon I think so he is not necessarily dead, but that explains why he could see them. But did he run because they confused him or because they were ghosts?
comrade106 5 years ago
Lil' Slugger was frightened of them because he couldn't attack them. If you finish the series it'll probably help you out.
pegusus96321 5 years ago
the little girl supposedly died from a cutout scene, which showed her jump off of a bridge, which took place between being ditched and the two OD'ing
Varent 5 years ago 4
Thank you; this is the post I appreciate the most. It cleared up the confusion I had about this episode. You're awesome!!
comrade106 5 years ago
I wonder why they would cut such an important scene??
comrade106 5 years ago
They didn't cut the scene. There's actually different explanations to how she died. The bridge is one of them and another is that she died from the carbon monoxide like the other two (it takes less poison to kill a smaller person). But it's never actually said when she dies.

but when they were running away from the little girl they did have shadws and lil' slugger had a shadow when they are chasing him you can see it so he is not dead

the extra thin condom thing is a social critic to the low rate of birth in Japan
they aparently stop casting shadows after the monoxide intoxication
and yeah, the tall guy is gay
joiri 5 years ago
when they were in the the hot spring boys and girls arent supossed to be in the same room together.. they call that being a pervert. now the lady did stop, but that was just a coinsidence, another is when the two maids stoped from goin down the stairs.
jwizzlefoeshizzle 5 years ago 2
The two maids stopped because Slugger was going down, not them.
Reklawniks 5 years ago
yes, but coinsidentlythey stopped when they were going down too...
jwizzlefoeshizzle 5 years ago
its not a coinsidence because it's an animation. i dont understand though because the two maids wait for them to pass but the maid on the right's head follows slugger but the one on the left moves her head when the others go by
kerflop 5 years ago
coinsidences and irony almost play the same role in this show.
jwizzlefoeshizzle 5 years ago
As with the photograph, ghosts are not entirely 'not there', they just aren't alive. Ever heard of a wind or cold breeze brushing past and some say it's an unrested soul? Also, Slugger isn't dead. He wasn't alive to begin with. Where as our trio, were alive, but are now apparently dead.
