  • @necrocoprophilia Wait, you are teaching me about hacking? LOL !

  • I could be mistaken, but i do believe that Berkeley is where BSD and GTK were born right? The GIMP was created as a proof of concept supporting GTK and User Interface Design too if I wasn't lied to. Therefore the purist would probably ascertain that GTK being the foundation of the Gnome Desktop Shell Environment would be the real BSD front end.

It becomes apparent that there's a lineage here and a timeless one that only gets stronger through the years.

  • @Houndx6 GIMP and GTK are GNU Projects.

  • @MagicSysRqKey

Yes, and the GIMP was a study supporting GTK for GUI design back in the day. Many seem unaware that GTK and the GIMP were actually funded along time ago. This explains why they are actually comprehensive comparing them to other similar items. The GNU project are purists to the extreme and in my opinion still on track with the real message behind OSI where it is actually meant to educate and not be commercialized/stolen.

  • If you are a gamer, use Windows, if you like movie editing, use Mac, if you are a programmer, use Linux, but if you are a hacker, use FreeBSD...

  • @AtomMp3 If you want to have continual problems regardless of your software, use a computer.

  • I've heard that Gnome is going to withdraw its support for non-Linux (BSD) Unix-like systems.

  • I'm a GNU/Linux user, but I have tremendous respect for FreeBSD and Unix in general and I prefer kde over gnome nowadays.

  • World most powerful operating system!

  • @hck112 not really!

  • it's funny how some console freaks would like beryl... see the irony in the movie: that guy types in quite a few commands on the console, just to get the beryl working. Either you like the mouse & beryl, or you like the console. 2 different things!!!

  • @cornelava cuz either you see the world in black and white, or you see it in colors. 2 different things!!

  • Linux = Unix-like

    FreeBSD = Unix

Therefore Linux wants to be like FreeBSD. That should tell you something.

  • @petegiant Linux was created as a free alternative to minix, Learn your history. Linux is just a kernel and freeBSD is a complete OS. You can however just use the BSD kernel and drop the GNU userland on top as the developers of debian have done. (GNU/KfreeBSD) I'm getting tired of people like you spreading false info.

  • @soulknifehunter BSD fanboy?

  • @DMBoyCloud Depends on what you mean by that. I am a fan of BSD and what it is capable of.

  • @soulknifehunter I am a GNU/Linux user and I think both are pretty good for hacking and software develop!

  • @petegiant wrong, freebsd is unix like too. They are both great too, and I use them on a daily basis.

  • Please explain me what the fuck is "modular Xorg" and why that guy said "freebsd hackers best friend" why linux can't be hacker best friend too wtf i dont undestrand please explian thanks

    genosklill

  • @GenoSkill also people with your intelligence shouldn't get into tech it will just confuse your simple mind. Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds would kick your ass out of any meeting your closed mind showed up to anyway.

  • @SuperGangstaGeek Why do you give a fuck about the status of my mind??? Mister "Gangsta Geek" oh, it's SUPER gangsta geek. what a great and down to earth name.

  • @GenoSkill just go work at staples and stop trying!! lmao fuckin noob

  • @GenoSkill Backtrack is a script kiddies best friend. It puts machine guns in the hands of monkeys.

  • (@sheepo399 )Free bsd in not linux or unix its way older. and it used to have alot of the same code as unix but they had to change it all awhile ago for legality. So learn more about computers fellas.

I really don't like people talking crap about windows when its probally what most of you are using. I use linux mint juliet dual booted w/ windows 7 the rest suck in my personal opinion. I do like Ubuntu but they have to work out there real players before I switch back. just my opinion

  • @SuperGangstaGeek Hey mister "gangsta geek" you're just a fag.

  • @GenoSkill at lest im not askin stupid question noob

  • FreeBSD sucks, I don't get it why so many sheeple think using a text based OS is so cool....sure you can add crap to it to make it look like windows, OR just use windows instead....this thing runs like a retard in the special olympics, it doesn't recognize half the hardware out there... it's basically Dos that takes up several Gigs of space and has compatibility issues with just about everything, even itself...

  • @FaNoLoX The purpose of using a text-based OS isn't to be cool, it's to have the simplicity and flexibility that a text-based OS offers. I'll agree that if you want a full desktop experience, you're better off using Windows or Mac OS. Also, i run FreeBSD on an old PC and i've actually had better hardware recognition than i got on Linux (which isn't saying much). The responsiveness that i'm getting out of this machine is much better than i had when i installed windows on it, as is the uptime

  • @FaNoLoX - DOS was a ripoff of Unix. MS-Windows is a ripoff from Apple/Macintosh, Excel was a ripoff of Lotus 1-2-3, Word a ripoff of WordPerfect. Microsoft was never innovative, only steal from others and take credit.

  • @evilunixuser1 how is windows a copy of apple. learn about xerox parc project with the alto. It is one of the best Pieces of computer history ever. gates and jobs stole the whole gui from xerox they stole the network card later became internet and object orientated programming. these were all made in 1977 and later we're stolen and nvr made search it!! cheers

  • @evilunixuser1 indeed

  • what's the difference between FreeBSD and Linux?

  • @eldaguinio google that question, dumb ass.

  • @jhonnyboy2050 ok.. dumb ass!!

  • @eldaguinio there are like 2 programs for freeBSD :D

  • @unrealjeff

There are like a shitty file-system and kernel for Linux. :-D

  • After installation there i have only text mode. How can I get/install windowed mode?

  • @mareq133 the text is freebsd...

  • @mareq133 with root privileges 'cd /usr/ports/x11/xorg && make install clean' (if memory serves me correctly), add hald_enable="YES" and dbus_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf. If you want a full desktop environment, cd into /usr/ports/x11/yourdesktop environment && make install clean. If you want a window manager, cd into /usr/ports/x11-wm/yourwm && make install clean. If you choose to install gnome, create a file in /home/yourname called .xinitrc and add to it 'exec gnome-session'.

  • @Justaguy1010

I started with rh3 and then went to fedora then when i went to freebsd i was bashing myself because in freebsd things actually make sense. It was so easy to install freebsd, even if you slice your own disk. As a matter of fact ubuntu and other distros make it hard to configure your pc because include their own configuration tools like debconft instead of for example the xorg configuration programs.

  • @missingxtension In this case u have to use KDE Interface. For example, openSuse, because KDE is easy to configure. That's not the problem of Ubuntu, not deb makes it hard to configure but Gnome. KDE is considered easily configurable.

  • @aliancemd

well in my opinion make and the bsd packager manager are easier.

But thats what i started with, kinda like the partition tools in bsd.

It makes more sense to call partitions slices. Then the disk labeling scheme, it makes it easier to find out what is what. But like i said its what i started with.

Its nothing to brag about (specially its no big deal), but i do like to ee /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  • not boring. go back to vista.

  • its true..freebsd is every hackers best friend..

  • @313c7r0idPu153 try backtrack and debian.

  • @313c7r0idPu153 why? :O :)

  • I mean no disrespect, but what you've made is a common mistake. Linux is unix, just like BSD. Mac OSX is a unix platform as well, combining aspects of the linux kernel with BSD. This is what Apple calls the "darwin" kernel. But yes, BSD has some promising aspects. However, for now, linux performs better in almost all fronts in comparison. I use ubuntu linux mainly, but i also use Open Solaris. Both are wonderful, however all operating systems using unix are suitable replacements for windows.

  • Hmm I think you're wrong in some parts iyanome. Linux is not UNIX; Linux is UNIX-like, meant to replace MINIX. MacOSX's XNU kernel is free and open source, but it incorporates more components from FreeBSD as opposed to Linux. FreeBSD's roots come directly from UNIX and is it's own complete OS; Linux is simply a kernel that relies to heavily off of GNU in order to make an OS. To top it off, companies like Yahoo and Sony use FreeBSD for their needs. Linux doesn't necessarily outperform BSD either.

  • @iyanome

Aloyalgamer is right and you're wrong, Linux is a Unix-like system but it's not Unix based, it's not Unix.

  • wtf command do u use to install a enviroment

  • Google is your friend.

    # cd /usr/ports/x11/gnome2

    # make clean; make install clean

  • ports for freebsd, apt-get for debian/ubuntu yum for fedora, rpm for redhat, zypper for opensuse/suse

  • @WeedingWaimbow: ports is not in the same category as the others. FreeBSD's equivalent here would be packages.

  • Haha, geek flame war. So fun to watch.

  • hahaha you faggots remind me of the never ending windows vs apple argument now it is between linux vs unix fuking geeks haha

  • I'll be downloading FreeBSD onto Virtual Box to check it out.

  • not true always

  • Both of you stop cursing at each other!

@bogoid: you should be proud someone else uses C. What you are doing is as if I cursed at someone speaking Italian just because my greatgrandfather fought in WWI on the Italian side.

@diegoedv: BSD is a "true" descendant of Unix. And you shouldn't spit blood at someone who expresses a feeling, even if wrong.

  • If I could ever figure out how to configure GRUB without shitting things up, I'd be on BSD in a heartbeat

  • google it, there's plenty of tutorials out there.

  • and you who searches youtube for videos related to people who "have no life" have an even more worthless life.

  • linux forever.

  • I don't get it, its using gnome, which is also on linux, so how does that define how freebsd looks

  • @sheepo399

That's because GNOME is a desktop enviroment for every unix-lile OS that uses X11.

  • @sheepo399 freebsd is only the kernel, gnome is desktop manager.

  • @elchippe Then what's the userland? And Gnome is a desktop environment.

  • FreeBSD looks like whatever DE it's running.

  • flash player?

  • Name one advantage of freeBSD over linux kthxbai.

  • You mean besides the business-friendly licensing?

  • I think GPL is fine for businesses, unless of course they want to mod the free software a bit, and then sell it to unsuspecting victims at unfair fees. And besides, I was thinking more along the lines of how freeBSD is better then Linux in terms of functionality. I can't think of any ways it is, perhaps you could enlighten me?

  • GPL, I seem to recall, taints any derived product.

Which means if I write a completely new product which just happens to use on GPL lib, all of my source is now GPL.

    Its not very business friendly.

  • While I do understand your point of view, I do disagree with it. GPL doesn't taint, it just (forcefully) protects. If I was to release something open source, I wouldn't want some company using my code for their proprietary shit. If you don't mind people doing that with your stuff, go ahead use the BSD license, but don't say that GPL sucks just because it has a different purpose/philosophy.

-Btw Gnome and Beryl are GPL, why use them when you can use stuff under the superior BSD license instead?

  • Sockman16, please quote me where I said "GPL sucks". I believe what I said was, "not very business friendly", and I stand by it.

I don't care WHY GPL was made as it it, I just don't think its business friendly (for the better part, of course we could both name exceptions).

  • Okay so you didn't say that GPL sucks, however it seems that you believe that the GPL licence is inferior, or perhaps it's just a misunderstanding on my part. GPL in some situations can be used for business, but I suppose that the BSD license is better in the situations where GPL isn't suited. I guess the point is that both licenses have an environment in which they are best suited. And then there's LGPL which I don't feel like getting into.

  • I really dislike how BSD hypocrites like you try to make the GPL to look inferior.

If you really have so much against the GPL stop using our GCC or anything that comes from the GNU project in your BSD systems, and GTFO.

  • Actually I'm a Linux developer, and spend most of my time in either Fedora or Debian.

Now, do you have anything else stupid to say?

  • Comment removed

  • relax.. pcc is coming ;)

  • stability, and a better license kthxbai

  • Comment removed

  • Drak, it doesn't have a "better" license. The word better (in this situation) is very subjective. It may be better in some respects, but GPL can also be considered better in other respects.... And you bring up stability? If you want to see unstable, go buy a copy of any Windows OS, I've never had a problem with stability in Linux except for when I alpha/beta test stuff.

  • ive never had a problem with windows. never gotten the blue screen or viruses

  • Comment removed

  • Stop lying to yourself, please.

  • frankly speaking, im a person who doesn't take sides with operating system. i have used windows, linux and mac os x. and i know all about these bsods but iv only ever had one once at a time when my comp was as slow as an elephant. so all these people who get bsods just need to keep their computer clean of viruses and thats that. period.

  • I see...

  • I agree, just go to the trend micro website, then perform a full system scan in safe mode :).

Or, use a floppy-based/cd-based AVC and you are all set :).

  • im not lying, i have never gotten a virus or blue screen

  • You're a LIAR! You can get viruses with knowing it and without antivirus's detecting them. So HA!

  • > sockman16: Name one advantage of freeBSD over linux kthxbai.

Well, how about /usr/local/etc for a safe way to override the package maintainer's version of the files in /etc ?

Or how about up to the minute userland apps but with a stable set of core OS files :) Sure some distros have backporting, but that is generally doesn't have a lot of apps. And yes yes, Gentoo + portage is similar, and that's fine.

mergemaster is nice (to they have similar in Linux yet?)

  • I'm thinking about checking out FreeBSD (Or should I start with PC-BSD?) and possibly making the switch if I like it.

I'm pretty familiar with Linux and use Slackware as my main OS.

How difficult is it to learn FreeBSD?

  • I have actually been using FreeBSD for a couple months now. It's really cool if you can get it working with the internet. If you want to install stuff, you just go to a ports folder and install. I find Unix-Like OSs are much more fun than GUI OSs. Just one opinion, though.

  • FreeBSD is quite easy wants you get ports down and all your hardware works

  • The truth is out there.

  • linux is better my linux only takes 15 seconds to boot

  • And for Others BSD loads faster, so BSD is better!

  • Are you for real?

I used NetBSD for years and my boot time was all.

I tired OpenBSD but it was slow as balls.

All the BSD are good, but they need more work.

    Linux is better, for now.

  • what is this shit? why you open command prompt?

press win+e, is a nice tip for you guys :D try it and see.

  • That's Linux he is opening the Gnome Terminal. I tried it on my Linux Laptop Win+E it actually does something cool. I won't tell you!

  • ? sry but i couldn't see anything better than linux...

in linux ubuntu i have that but i don't need to enter a single line of code to put effects to work, im not saying that bsd is bad i'm just comenting because of your description Fancy FreeBSD desktop using Modular Xorg. This stuff isn't just for Linux kiddies! ...i didnt notice the reason why you put this...

  • love how you misspelled every word you put on here. Priceless. OHHH!!! Were you trying to do that?

  • Cinema display FTW

    Best moniters ever

  • most overpriced monitors ever

  • HMM..

  • I thought being smart was a good thing?

  • Yepp it's to geek for linux kids. BSD Live long!

  • Is that a Cinema Display....

(Grinning at the sight of one)

  • ubuntu, in my opinion seems better. more compatibility and power because since it's more popular theres much more things to download and much more sources when downloading things.

  • actually, I was stunned by freebsd's excellent hardware handling, cross-platform tools (runs linux binaries and many windows drivers can be easily wrapped to run natively).

plus, the collossal ports collection which is consistent and provides packages, cvs, source,

    whichever install/update method you prefer.

i needed korean stuff so i just went to /usr/ports/korean and typed

    pkg_add -r *

went to make myself a sandwich. 20min later, logged into a fully korean-friendly X session.

  • rockwizclown - "ubuntu, in my opinion seems better"

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, I will refrain from using terms such as "fuck face" etc. But you sir, are way out of your depth making that comment.

  • why r u getting all anal about it?

  • It all depends on what you're striving for. I'd be inclined to agree with you for a desktop installation, but all my servers run BSD. 2 years without a reboot!

  • Been playing with FreeBSD for a few months now, I definately still prefer the linux distros I use but BSD has nontheless won itself a place in my home.

  • I prefer console. :P

  • Windows rules!!! (sarcasm)

  • >Debian GNU Linux is based on BSD

Whoa! Genius! At last all of us deluded stupid idiots who thought that Debian was based on Linux kernel with GNU kit and while BSD systems on 4.4BSD-Lite are enlightened by your eternal wisdom!

  • He's wrong, but no need to be acthing like that.

  • What is Debian?

Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux.

  • HAX

  • That guy's awesome ^

  • Your wallpaper is so cool man, where can i get it?

  • its fuckn freeBSD omg morons xD

  • anyone who says "OH THATS UBUNTU" are complete morons. First off thats freebsd, you can tell by the "WELCOME TO FREEBSD" or if you have ever even booted up freebsd before, you could tell. Second both Linux and Freebsd can use X11 with gnome, kde or xfce. So for your questions... Yes, its freebsd. No, it's not ubuntu. Yes, freebsd does indeed "rock." and Linux runs a lot of Different package managers where freebsd has a port system.

  • i guess with the open availability of ubuntu, effective WOM marketing and relative ease of use you begin to get the windows incompetents migrating to ubuntu, then claiming anything that has gnome + beryl/compiz/xgl etc is instantly ubuntu...sad that the open source community has to have imbeciles joining the ranks. soon you'll get them being unable to distinguish the difference between ubuntu and kubuntu

  • > sad that the open source community has to

    > have imbeciles joining the ranks

there were plenty of imbeciles in the linux community before. there are also a fair number of elitist assholes.

  • yeah lol

  • no, your wrong beryl can run on both operating systems which makes them almost look the same:P

  • Beryl runs on any unix based open source system

  • You best be trolling.

  • lamer

  • Bad troll,

It's BSD running Gnome, you can see the FreeBSD loadup in the beginning.

  • Please tell me you were joking. It says FreeBSD in the video's title, and the boot screen is completely different.

A Unix-based OS isn't just automatically Ubuntu, you know.

  • You're 100% wrong.

    "lulz"....

  • blah blah blah...

that's FreeBSD. you won't change the fact by repeating the same bullshit even 100 times.

  • just as i am 100% sure that you use windows

  • hi i have been using linux and windows on dule boot but can someone plz tell me do u get the package manager that comes with linux?

  • i meen is the package manager in bsd the same as the one in linux?

  • Free BSD is AWSOME!!!

  • Parabéns pelo video.

  • > it's win 95 ;)

you mean it's installed in your brains?

  • I have Windows Vista with Crysis installed in my brain. Whenever I'm bored, I just power it up and play Crysis.

*sigh* I really need a new computer.

  • jelly!!!!!!

  • ljonny@youtube:~$ you can see it by different points of view. these guys, who from the beginning use Mac OS X, say FreeBSD is hard to work with(but in fact, it isn't). other guys, working since their beginning with FreeBSD, say Mac OS X is today idiot friendly, because the system does really evereything for you(i think this is not good..). it's like every OS: one time you are familiar with FreeBSD, it isn't difficult to work with.

  • I'm sorry but I see no purpose in using an ancient operating system that's over-complicated and even harder to use than an OS that shall not be named here. Rhymes with Frito's. Stick with your stoneage BIOS and ridiculously overused Terminal. I'll stay with Mac OS X and occasionally pop my head into Windows via Virtual Machine. It's almost scary watching you middle-aged UNIX fanboys arguing over BSD and Linux. But I wouldn't understand.

After all, I'm just some ol' whippersnapper anyhow.

  • lol, just so you know OSX is base of freebsd.

So that would make OSX what you call 'middle-aged UNIX'

  • OS X is not based off FreeBSD. It evolved from NeXTStep so STFU and learn what the fucking real deal is dumbass.

  • hate to bust your bubble leodime. Would you happen to know where NeXTStep forked its code from?

  • Yes, I know that NeXTstep has the Mach kernel and source code from BSD UNIX but that technically does not make Mac OS X a descendant of BSD. And even if we were to say that it is, does it even matter? Mac OS X made all the GOOD things about those operating systems like the Terminal and the Dock and the Windowed environment and made it better.

  • Mac osx is for simpletons that use there computers for sending photos to other simpletons enjoy your limited software choices

  • 1. Sending photos? Have you used a Mac for 30 days or are you just mindlessly ragging on it?

    2. Chris Pirillo said himself that Mac OS X was the best user-friendly operating system to come out from any OS vendor. So I'd rather do things simpler in Mac OS X than spend all my time typing in a black window.

    3. Limited software choices? You DO know that FreeBSD owns NO OS MARKET SHARE right? None. Period. Go look it up. Acting like you BSD guys have more software than OS X is just...

  • 1. well ok, you can also listen to music

2.i dont know who chris prillo is, but user-friendly doesnt negate that the os is designed for simpletons

3.yes much more limited choices than an OS i use such as windows, i was merely browsing this video to see what freebsd was capably of. i dont represent them. Apple = simple computers for simple people
