This might sound silly to you, but the best mindset to have when defending your home is to pretend you're breaching someone else's home. Move fast, stay low, weapon at low-ready.

@BALJIT147 nah, there was a man who stabbed a burgular with his own knife in self defense who was recently let off the charge, however, the law is strict on excessive force, a man shot 2 robbers in the leg with his shotgun, the robbers were unarmed and under uk law a gun must be kept unloaded in a locked gun safe and its recomended the ammo is kept seperate, if he followed these laws he would've been unable to use a gun in self-defense, once a gun is used in self defense its illegal to own

@2010blackhawkdown There are still social boundaries and prejudices - people tend to prevent others from progress, especially when you are at work. Sometimes the superior people are overbearing - they just dump their weight on everybody and kick people about, just because they can. Society seems to support the oppressor and blame the victim. In defensive situations, never, ever, hold a flashlight directly in front of you. This includes a flashlight mounted on a firearm. Many perps will fire at a flashlight, which is not good if you're standing directly behind.
Instead, obtain a highly directional flashlight (one which does not throw a glow to either side which can also illuminate you), and then hold that well to your side (arms length). Thus, if a perp fires at the light, there's very little behind to hit.
I believe in home defense. Mine starts with keeping the as s holes out of my home first. Last line of defense is all the family in the bed room and a 12 gage. It would take swat 20 minutes to brake in.
For some reason I don’t want to have nightmares from shooting some one if I don’t need to for years and years.
DO NOT wrap a cord around your neck just before a possible fight as shown in this video. I'd rather snap a fanny pack around my waist. If someone really feels that they need something around their neck, at least make sure its a "breakaway" material that can't be used to choke you like the cord shown in the video.
@ridah925 thanks for the comment! Whats really interesting is that Thunder Ranch JUST came out with a modified version of what we are talking about! Have you seen it? search for "thunder ranch chest rig" From what I've seen so far, it looks much better. Its like a tactical vest, but smaller, and it secures around the waste and the shoulder straps aren't as close to the neck as what is in this video. So, apparently Clint improved on his idea already!
My Benelli SuperNova sits right next to my bed loaded with 00 buck 3 1/2 shells. My brother has his MossBerg 590 right next to his bed, with 00 buck 2 3/4. I feel pretty safe at night ; )
@TafTabTah I usually carry my Model 1858 Remington New Army with the barrel in 5-inch "Gunfighter" configuration as a truck gun all the time. There is nothing like the thunderous blast from that old smokepole and a 200-grain soft lead bullet traveling at 1100 feet per second to take down deer and antelope for my campfire. I also feel as safe as a frontiersman in his wood cabin :)
@TafTabTah I use it for Cowboy Action Shooting matches. It is accurate, powerful and rugged, a revolver which would have made a Turko-Mongol mounted hunter proud! I don't have a camera but you can go to CASCity site and see pics there. It is a website all about Cowboy Action Shooting.
He also suggested having a pop-tart in that chest fannypack, but edited that out. Also that fire extinguisher he held up was actually a big bottle of hot sauce. Hmmmm.
I really like this setup, simple, cheap, and effective. A home alarm would also be a very good idea, scares them off or at least gives you warning; and the police will be on the way.
And dont forget, if you find yourself with no weapons facing a attacking intruder, you can always stick your thumbs in both their eye sockets and push as far back as you can displacing the eyeball.
Most intruders are just some guy that wants to get in, grab a few things and get out. They USUALLY dont carry guns so a (pump-action) shotgun has a hidden advantage so to speak. Everyone and their mother knows what that "CHAK-CHAK!" sound means and unless they came in looking for a gun fight, that sound will send most guys running.
The best home defense weapons are .22 semi-autos. (I can just hear the groans.)
The .22LR is one of the most underrated cartridges of all time. Most people believe it to be almost toy like. They're wrong. A .22LR is lethal out to 300 yards! At 650 yards it is still traveling at over 500ft. per sec. In the home, it is an extremely effective tool.
Easy to shoot, no recoil and accurate!
If I could only own one gun it would be a Ruger 10/22 with a 25 rnd mag.
@9streets See, that's true in an ideal world. In HD, I expect to be shooting from crappy cover, potentially wounded, and miss a lot. That's just human performance under stress. I want a caliber that will put them down even if I don't get perfect hits.
@9streets Trust me I love my .22's but when in a HD situation, a .22 might not have the ft/lbs capable of causing someone to stop in their shoes. If someone is really determined to get at you or your family a .22 might not cut it unless you hit them in the vitals, which when the adrenalin and blood is really pumping you might not take a great shot. .22's are great for hunting, they can even take down deer, don't ask me how I know, but your going to need something more devastating.
@jerryboy219 This is a really valid point from another perspective as well. If you have a gun, even just a .22 pistol a lot of people might get scared and run, and they still hurt and they still kill. But if you come up against someone on PCP who will literally get shot in the stomach and not care enough to stop chewing on your face, you need something that will cause major damage instantly.

i think its wrong to assume that all liberals are "anti-gun". true libertarians should stand for all liberties- including the liberty to own firearms. My plan is to keep the people out of the house at least 10 to 15 minutes. The reason is so I can call the 911, get my family to a some what safe room. So I can get my guns out and me to my concealed ambush. It is not just surviving the assault by evil it is surviving the after math of criminal court so you don’t go to jail. Its also surviving the civil lawsuit for the half Million or so. I also don’t want the nightmare of have to kill.

Your murder rate went up notably in the 10 yrs post ban and serious assault against women went from less than half that of the US to over 2x that of the US. The crime rate in the US has been going down for that same 10 yrs. What happens if you actually get all the guns out? The criminals go after women, elderly, and children. You dont actually lower crime rates you just change the pattern. Exact same pattern emerged with Australias gun laws.

Spend some time on the Ammo Oracle before you rely on #9 shot for self defense. I'm not saying it can't be lethal, but I will say it might not be reliable in a defensive encounter. #1 or Single 0 is generally thought to be the way to go. In a fight, there are a number of variables you may not be able to control...why not control all of the variables you can beforehand?
I own a security camera business, and most people wait till they are robbed before they call me.Dont wait till ur house and ur family are violated before u put in security measures. Invest in a shotgun and or a camera system.When I am called robbers usually have struck. They mostly take guns, jewelery, small electronics like cameras, and tools. Stuff the can carry and easily hide on their person. The family is usually always pissed, and they dont feel comfortable in their home anymore.

for those of you that believe either a tactical shot gun or no shotgun let me tell you something, that model 870 is one of the best goddamn weapons for home defense there is today, it doesn't matter if its tactical or not cause if there is someone in your house and its pitch black and you hear the action of a 12 ga. you WILL go the other way. Not only does this weapon have some serious fire power, it is known best for the psychological affect it has on your attacker
While I agree with your position that it doesn't matter whether a shotgun is "tactical" or not, the idea of putting a "bad guy" on the run with nothing more than cycling the action is wishful thinking at best. If you expect it to work, by all means, keep yours unloaded and pump away.
As for the best weapon for home defense, that's simple. The best home defense weapon is the weapon you have when you need it. Any gun will do if you will do.

@joshua10002008 believe it or not the great thing about any pump shotgun is that ITS A PUMP shotgun manually operated is the way to go in home defense and choice of brand comes down to personal preference some people like the mossberg because its light because it is made from an aluminum reciever. but it also doesnt have the weight to mitigate recoil for a fster follow up shot . some like the 870 because it is made of a steel reciever making it heavier but you can make a quicker follow shot

Add half a pound for 5 rounds, under a pound for 8 rounds of 12ga. Lengths c38" 18" barrel versions. Less muzzle blast than 223 indoors.

@BigBulgeInThePants what kind of shotguns are you talkin about? the remington 870 with a 18-20 in barrel only weighs about 7 pounds which is why the fucker hurts so damn much when you unload 2 3/4 in. 00 buck in it. a shotgun is a freakin CQB weapon which is why law enforcement use a shotgun when clearing rooms or breaching doors. an assault weapon such as an M4 or an ak weighs about 9 pounds and has far less knockdown power. however, i'd take my .45 over a shotgun any day. but the Rem is next.

You don't know everything. 5.56 works well with mil/police applications but in a hd scenario, It is likely to overpenetrate and kill innocent people. Have you ever even fired buckshot? @MikeHoxbigg1 Actually, 5.56mm with the right loads will penetrate a heck lot less than handgun or shotgun fire, fragmenting in interior walls. Pistol bullets and shotgun pellets are dense, slow moving rounds - they don't shatter inside walls and keep tunneling through.

In defensive situations, never, ever, hold a flashlight directly in front of you. This includes a flashlight mounted on a firearm. Many perps will fire at a flashlight, which is not good if you're standing directly behind.
Instead, obtain a highly directional flashlight (one which does not throw a glow to either side which can also illuminate you), and then hold that well to your side (arms length). Thus, if a perp fires at the light, there's very little behind to hit.

I believe in home defense. Mine starts with keeping the as s holes out of my home first. Last line of defense is all the family in the bed room and a 12 gage. It would take swat 20 minutes to brake in.
For some reason I don’t want to have nightmares from shooting some one if I don’t need to for years and years.

Great information as usual.
One important thing to keep in mind:
DO NOT wrap a cord around your neck just before a possible fight as shown in this video. I'd rather snap a fanny pack around my waist. If someone really feels that they need something around their neck, at least make sure its a "breakaway" material that can't be used to choke you like the cord shown in the video.

@ridah925 thanks for the comment! Whats really interesting is that Thunder Ranch JUST came out with a modified version of what we are talking about! Have you seen it? search for "thunder ranch chest rig" From what I've seen so far, it looks much better. Its like a tactical vest, but smaller, and it secures around the waste and the shoulder straps aren't as close to the neck as what is in this video. So, apparently Clint improved on his idea already!

@TafTabTah I usually carry my Model 1858 Remington New Army with the barrel in 5-inch "Gunfighter" configuration as a truck gun all the time. There is nothing like the thunderous blast from that old smokepole and a 200-grain soft lead bullet traveling at 1100 feet per second to take down deer and antelope for my campfire. I also feel as safe as a frontiersman in his wood cabin :)

@TafTabTah I use it for Cowboy Action Shooting matches. It is accurate, powerful and rugged, a revolver which would have made a Turko-Mongol mounted hunter proud! I don't have a camera but you can go to CASCity site and see pics there. It is a website all about Cowboy Action Shooting.

I really like this setup, simple, cheap, and effective. A home alarm would also be a very good idea, scares them off or at least gives you warning; and the police will be on the way.
And dont forget, if you find yourself with no weapons facing a attacking intruder, you can always stick your thumbs in both their eye sockets and push as far back as you can displacing the eyeball.

Most intruders are just some guy that wants to get in, grab a few things and get out. They USUALLY dont carry guns so a (pump-action) shotgun has a hidden advantage so to speak. Everyone and their mother knows what that "CHAK-CHAK!" sound means and unless they came in looking for a gun fight, that sound will send most guys running.

The best home defense weapons are .22 semi-autos. (I can just hear the groans.)
The .22LR is one of the most underrated cartridges of all time. Most people believe it to be almost toy like. They're wrong. A .22LR is lethal out to 300 yards! At 650 yards it is still traveling at over 500ft. per sec. In the home, it is an extremely effective tool.
Easy to shoot, no recoil and accurate!
If I could only own one gun it would be a Ruger 10/22 with a 25 rnd mag.
I'd like to hear your comments.

@9streets See, that's true in an ideal world. In HD, I expect to be shooting from crappy cover, potentially wounded, and miss a lot. That's just human performance under stress. I want a caliber that will put them down even if I don't get perfect hits.

@9streets Trust me I love my .22's but when in a HD situation, a .22 might not have the ft/lbs capable of causing someone to stop in their shoes. If someone is really determined to get at you or your family a .22 might not cut it unless you hit them in the vitals, which when the adrenalin and blood is really pumping you might not take a great shot. .22's are great for hunting, they can even take down deer, don't ask me how I know, but your going to need something more devastating.

@jerryboy219 This is a really valid point from another perspective as well. If you have a gun, even just a .22 pistol a lot of people might get scared and run, and they still hurt and they still kill. But if you come up against someone on PCP who will literally get shot in the stomach and not care enough to stop chewing on your face, you need something that will cause major damage instantly.

i think its wrong to assume that all liberals are "anti-gun". true libertarians should stand for all liberties- including the liberty to own firearms. I'm as liberal as they come but i believe its every american citizen's right/responsibility to own and properly know how to use a firearm. if you truely care about your friends/family- wouldnt you want to protect them? i own a couple 22's (because they're cheap) but im looking into getting a hi-point 995 and some hollowpoint rounds for them.

My plan is to keep the people out of the house at least 10 to 15 minutes. The reason is so I can call the 911, get my family to a some what safe room. So I can get my guns out and me to my concealed ambush. It is not just surviving the assault by evil it is surviving the after math of criminal court so you don’t go to jail. Its also surviving the civil lawsuit for the half Million or so. I also don’t want the nightmare of have to kill.

Your murder rate went up notably in the 10 yrs post ban and serious assault against women went from less than half that of the US to over 2x that of the US. The crime rate in the US has been going down for that same 10 yrs. What happens if you actually get all the guns out? The criminals go after women, elderly, and children. You dont actually lower crime rates you just change the pattern. Exact same pattern emerged with Australias gun laws.

Spend some time on the Ammo Oracle before you rely on #9 shot for self defense. I'm not saying it can't be lethal, but I will say it might not be reliable in a defensive encounter. #1 or Single 0 is generally thought to be the way to go. In a fight, there are a number of variables you may not be able to control...why not control all of the variables you can beforehand?

I own a security camera business, and most people wait till they are robbed before they call me.Dont wait till ur house and ur family are violated before u put in security measures. Invest in a shotgun and or a camera system.When I am called robbers usually have struck. They mostly take guns, jewelery, small electronics like cameras, and tools. Stuff the can carry and easily hide on their person. The family is usually always pissed, and they dont feel comfortable in their home anymore.

for those of you that believe either a tactical shot gun or no shotgun let me tell you something, that model 870 is one of the best goddamn weapons for home defense there is today, it doesn't matter if its tactical or not cause if there is someone in your house and its pitch black and you hear the action of a 12 ga. you WILL go the other way. Not only does this weapon have some serious fire power, it is known best for the psychological affect it has on your attacker

While I agree with your position that it doesn't matter whether a shotgun is "tactical" or not, the idea of putting a "bad guy" on the run with nothing more than cycling the action is wishful thinking at best. If you expect it to work, by all means, keep yours unloaded and pump away.
As for the best weapon for home defense, that's simple. The best home defense weapon is the weapon you have when you need it. Any gun will do if you will do.

@sevensickstrings I agree with you a shotgun doesn't need to look tactical. It just needs to be effective. The Remington 870 is considered the best shotgun around. I own one. I love the sound when racking the action. I agree with your statement "The best home defense weapon is the weapon you have when you need it." @joshua10002008 believe it or not the great thing about any pump shotgun is that ITS A PUMP shotgun manually operated is the way to go in home defense and choice of brand comes down to personal preference some people like the mossberg because its light because it is made from an aluminum reciever. but it also doesnt have the weight to mitigate recoil for a fster follow up shot . some like the 870 because it is made of a steel reciever making it heavier but you can make a quicker follow shot

@joshua10002008 either way i believe a shotgun is the way to go for home defense but 00buck is not. 00 buck will penetrate a human no problem then its course will also make it through solid wooden doors and walls . #9 birdshot is what i advocate. #9 will hit an intruder soo hard it will lay him out flat even through drywall. but not have enough energy to make it through other walls and doors to impact your loved ones or exit the walls of your residence

A legal semi auto version is not a real AR. M16A2/A4 is 9lb loaded, M4 8, AKM 9lb. Win1300 weighs 6.75lb, Rem870/Ithica37 a little heavier empty, due to their steel receivers. Add half a pound for 5 rounds, under a pound for 8 rounds of 12ga. Lengths c38" 18" barrel versions. Less muzzle blast than 223 indoors.

@BigBulgeInThePants what kind of shotguns are you talkin about? the remington 870 with a 18-20 in barrel only weighs about 7 pounds which is why the fucker hurts so damn much when you unload 2 3/4 in. 00 buck in it. a shotgun is a freakin CQB weapon which is why law enforcement use a shotgun when clearing rooms or breaching doors. an assault weapon such as an M4 or an ak weighs about 9 pounds and has far less knockdown power. however, i'd take my .45 over a shotgun any day. but the Rem is next.

@aliefmarinecadet an m4 only weighs 6 pounds, i know because i have used one and been trained on one, loaded about 8, which is a standard m16A2 weight unloaded, and the adjustable stock gives a huge advantage in urban ops because of the shortness it creates, when room clearing a shotgun will only get you and your battle buddies killed by friendly fire, and what if there are innocents in the room? i would rather use a controlled pair to the chest then to spray buckshot all over

@BigBulgeInThePants yea an m4 does weigh 8 pounds STOCK! if there is a tac team going into a house i garantee the m4 aint ganna be stock, once you put on all the attachments ( vertical grip, rail system, lights, and sights) you are taking a weapon that weighs about 9 1/2-10 pounds like i previously stated, i was also trained on an m4 yes going in with civies can be tricky, however my preference is a 12 ga. do to the fact that a freakin balistic .22 wont bring down a coked up drugy. buckshot will

@aliefmarinecadet a controlled pair of 5.56 to the chest will bring anyone down unless they got body armor on, and by the way, the m4 has the rail system already built onto it. its part of the original weight. i have never seen a buckshot round for my m203 even though they make them, because they are ineffective and get a lot of innocents killed. have you ever seen someone get hit by a 5.56 round? that fucking tears them up more than spraying them with pellets

You don't know everything. 5.56 works well with mil/police applications but in a hd scenario, It is likely to overpenetrate and kill innocent people. Have you ever even fired buckshot? It does NOT "spray all over". At hd ranges, It patterns pretty damn tight. Get off your high horse and stop bashing civillians. If you dont believe in civillian's rights, why did you join the military?

@MikeHoxbigg1 Actually, 5.56mm with the right loads will penetrate a heck lot less than handgun or shotgun fire, fragmenting in interior walls. Pistol bullets and shotgun pellets are dense, slow moving rounds - they don't shatter inside walls and keep tunneling through.
