i think that if george harrison would invite david to his bangladesh concert, david with "quicksand" and "changes" would rocked more than any other guest
what may make it moving is the strange key changes and unexpected diminished chords -used very cleverly. Well, he was a bloody Beatle after all! (George of course)
Bowie is a one man Beatle, so prolific. Up until 2003 anway..
@kerati51 I thought I was the only one - there are at least two of us! I love the BB original, but don't forget that Bowie's 1984 version is based on the 1973 version he did with Ava Cherry.
I like George Harrison's version better. I think , in some cases, David Bowie does a remake of a song and makes it sound better than the original. But this isn't one of those cases.
Bowie nailed this! Easily the best version. Ronnie Spector's comes in second; don't forget that George Harrison wrote and arranged it for her. His version, I'm sorry, is the one I like the least because his voice strains trying to sing to music arranged for someone else. In fact I found that music to be slow and draggy compared to the much tighter arrangement backing Bowie. But that's just my humble opinion; you're free to disagree.
Im a huge fan of Bowie and Beatles and actually I love all three versions each for different reasons. Purely on the basis of vocals probably Harrisons was the best,
I'm pretty sure this is my favourite version of it. But I think I always choose Bowie's versions of any song because I have such a soft spot for David's beautiful voice.. <3
I've been a long time George Harrison and David Bowie fan, and while I do agree tha Bowie is a better singer (by a mile), I must admit that I was disappointed when I heard his version of this song. George Harrison gives it so much feeling that it makes Bowie's version sound like it was sung by a Robot.
I think this song REQUIRES analog recoding gear. This version, while nice, doesn't have "glue" that the Ronnie Spector version has. Ah..the warmth of analog.
@oogie11 Thanks for the information about Ronnie Spector's version. I checked it out, and it's is good. Naturally, the orchestration is very similar to the Harrison version.
@241357 You're welcome....I do have to agree with you that the George Harrison one is slightly better than the Bowie version, and that is weird coming from me, as I ama big Bowie fan
Always an agony deciding whether to re-listen to a Bowie song I love ...or to try a new rarity. Wait Wait... there's STARMAN in the sidebar...brb afk

I love David Bowie's remake of "God Only Knows", which was a Beach Boys song. He really made it sound GREAT!

I'm a big Beatles/Harrison fan but the Ronnie Spector version is best to me. She recorded it first in '71.

David did justice for this song but no one does it better than George. And I love Bowie!
BOWIEGIRL30 1 year ago
Is this on some album he did. I can not imagine Bowie trying to cover this Harrison classic, any more than Harrison trying to cover Diamond Dogs.
