Entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 on 07-07-1973, it peaked at No. 94 and spent 5 weeks in the Top 100...
On 08-09-1947 Tex Williams' version reached #1 {for 6 weeks} on Billboard's Best Sellers chart, he also made #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart and was in the top spot for 16 non-consecutive weeks. In 1960 he re-recorded the song in stereo for an album. He was the co-writer of the song with Merle Travis...
George, I was lucky enough to meet you guys at the El Mocombo in Toronto backstage & got to meet Bobby Black...what a great guy!!! Loved your band back then...my favourite!!
Hey George, nice job on the video. Always loved this song....remember me "Kid Curry"? We did a couple of gigs, and some good times at various places. Drop a line,.....
A great rendition, but it was a little juvenile to put the F-word into the last chorus of the song--like a naughty boy saying, "See what I can do?" (F--, f---, f-- them if you f--- yourself to death!) I don't think it's terrible--after all, this is a comedy song-- but the song would be better without it.
Had to go outside to smoke smoke my cigarettes at last night Commanders gig.
Great show though, really down to earth yet talented people who are not afraid to mingle with audience between sets. I highly recommend their show I saw them once in 1980 and they were just as good last night as they were 30 years ago. A good time is guaranteed for all
good amusing song, can"t remember who was the original was well over 40years.He sings about 48 states, its been 50 for a while that can help date the original
Great,!!! In the middle eighties, in Flagstaff AZ, I got on stage with the Commander and had a whole pack of cigs lite in my mouth...While they played this song......

@RaananVolesPianist It's not the F-word, it's ... "puff, puff, puff, them if you puff yourself to death". You know, like puff the cigerette.

That guitar solo after the first verse and chorus is one of my favorites of all time. So funky.

Aimmarked you sound a little wound up, perhaps you should relax and have a smoke.

A very funny song - definitely un-PC, which is probably why I like it, and I don't even smoke!

@rc08dhrm Merle Travis and Tex Williams co-wrote it. You can hear some fine 'Travis-style' picking by Kirshen at about 1:00 to 1:30
