People talk so much s-h-i-t about these instructional videos but they don't do anything about it; as an amateur, i want to learn how to throw properly, so this is a call to action:
Looking For -----> Experienced Professional-Made Frisbee Throw Video
If you're stall count is like 8, your dump is nowhere and they're cupping, then a scoober or a hammer, even a thumber, depending on your defender, can be a good idea. Sure they're showy, but they wouldn't be in ultimate if they didn't work.
Hammers aren't a bad throw but overall not worth throwing unless someone is very open or on an obvious mismatch. I find that if you're going to throw a hammer, especially in the redzone then you might as well just swing it around and reset till you can get another good cut at a corner. A hammer over a cup definetly isn't a bad idea if your handler is accurate.
I find that using a thumber in a game is like handing the disc to the other team, because it has no benefits when compared to a hammer, although, having said that, every throw has it's situation. Personally I prefer throwing a high-release flick over an overhand or "wristflip" throw. As far as hammers are concerned, I find that a handler with a reliable and accurate hammer and a reciever that can read a hammer could be the difference between a loss and a victory. My 2c.
A hammer can be quite accurate, but it can be unpredictable if you don't know how to read it. They can also get caught by the wind pretty easily. They're awesome when thrown well and very frustrating when they aren't. I typically prefer flicks and backhands.
I do feel like this guy probably knows what he is doing, but I do agree that he doesn't seem like he's an especially good player.
Actually, if you are used to throwing in the wind, like any other throw, you can put the hammer right on someone's feet, lead them with it or anything else you may do with a normal throw. I see it as a more difficult, but equally effective and reliable (once you have it mastered) throw. It lets the handler throw over a defender and gives you that deep option even in a straight up mark.
@LastSecondHeroics I agree, he knows the throws, but his techniques are bad for in game. All of his throws are lofty and his hammer turns over way too soon. Oldschool players learned most of the throws, but they used them in different ways. As an ultimate player I never use anything other than backhand, flicking, and hammer. I feel that the other techniques are not needed if you have those three.
@Fashkill I'm the same way. Those are the only throws that I ever use in games, except I don't really even use hammers. I like knowing the other throws, but in a real game I'm going to rely on the more dependable throws.
@LastSecondHeroics Yeah, I enjoy playing around with the other throws...like when I'm just playing a pick up game. But in a real situation where I'm trying to win, I would never use anything more than my base 3.

the hammer isn't unpredictable at all. the only way it would be is if you didn't know how to throw it. i think it's one of the most accurate you can throw if you know what you're doing.
i'm also pretty sure that the names for these throws are regional. names vary from place to place.
There are a lot of throws that have different names depending on where you play. My school team calls it a thumber and a catch-toss (as opposed to a wristflip). We call the side arm throw he was referring to a forehand throw or flick. It really just depends on the people who taught you and who you play with.

Its not called a thumber, its called a tomahawk (spelling) and not the wristflip, its the chicken wing. ive been playin ultimate for over 4 yrs, and no one call's it a thumber or wrist flip.
im tellin u, its not the thumber, and the hammer and tomohawk are different, u have the disc flipped from a normal hammer and that is what a tomohawk is... it will then rotate over in the opposite direction, and allows it to go the opposite direction as a hammer.
z2a, you are correct in that the thummer is thrown right side up. What he is demonstrating is the INVERSE hammer. Its essentially the hammer just with the opposite curve. The thummer is thrown flat, not upside down, and it's generally a skilled high release forehand throw.
That is incorrect, the throw he demonstrates in the video was correctly named as a thumber. There may be other throws people refer to as thumbers as well, but I know for a fact that what you call an "inverse hammer" is a thumber
question: I've played ultimate for a few months now, twice a week, and I've always been told(and have read) that in the thumber, the disc is thrown right-side up and flies right-side up(unlike the hammer which is thrown vertically and then curves to end up upside-down). looked like you were showing it upside-down. thought i'd check
nope, thats the right way here, the only thing is that you really shouldn't even use it. all you really need is the straight up backhand and flick, then the hammer
Hammer and the Wrist Flip (Ridge Hand or the Chicken Wing) are actually two very helpful throws.
However, even though the Hammer is a good throw, it is much more difficult for your target to catch.
And the Ridge Hand is a difficult throw to master, but can be helpful, especially if you break your hand and can only play with one hand. (Yeah, cannot hold back a true frisbee player... Even when he broke his hand he played for 1-1/2 more hours)
Ultimate was the first time that I ever felt cool playing a sport. It was a bright spot in an otherwise miserable and esteem crushing three years of middle school phys. ed. It was fun in college and now that I'm in shape again in my 30's, I'm psyched to play again.
If you can throw a frisbee, you can play it and have fun, even if there are some people far better than you out there on the field. I can kick a ball, but haven't the skills necessary to really enjoy soccer, imo.

Hey Captain logic, I said I played Ultimate for several months on a University team, that means I have probably played with and against HUNDREDS of ultimate players, all of which made me cringe. I am not judging the sport after throwing a frisbee once or twice with some stoners. For Hammers, Scoobers and Thumbers you want to throw in a fashion that it does not flatten out as if your throw becomes flat and then switches (the curve) then curves further losing control (AKA Double Helixing) .
The hammer curves to the right and the thumber curves left assuming you are right handed.
the wrist flip is not BS. I have difficulty throwing a forehand or flicker but I can throw a wrist flip accurately and over long distances to compensate. It's just not a comfortable throw for most people.

Frisbee isn't a sport, it's for band kids and asians who aren't athletic enough to play football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, hockey, track and field, etc. Whoever see this and thinks it's cool, really needs to play some real sports. Get a life, get out of marching band, get into a gym, and play a REAL sport. Enough said.

If you're stall count is like 8, your dump is nowhere and they're cupping, then a scoober or a hammer, even a thumber, depending on your defender, can be a good idea. Sure they're showy, but they wouldn't be in ultimate if they didn't work.

Hammers aren't a bad throw but overall not worth throwing unless someone is very open or on an obvious mismatch. I find that if you're going to throw a hammer, especially in the redzone then you might as well just swing it around and reset till you can get another good cut at a corner. A hammer over a cup definetly isn't a bad idea if your handler is accurate.

I find that using a thumber in a game is like handing the disc to the other team, because it has no benefits when compared to a hammer, although, having said that, every throw has it's situation. Personally I prefer throwing a high-release flick over an overhand or "wristflip" throw. As far as hammers are concerned, I find that a handler with a reliable and accurate hammer and a reciever that can read a hammer could be the difference between a loss and a victory. My 2c.

A hammer can be quite accurate, but it can be unpredictable if you don't know how to read it. They can also get caught by the wind pretty easily. They're awesome when thrown well and very frustrating when they aren't. I typically prefer flicks and backhands.
I do feel like this guy probably knows what he is doing, but I do agree that he doesn't seem like he's an especially good player.

Actually, if you are used to throwing in the wind, like any other throw, you can put the hammer right on someone's feet, lead them with it or anything else you may do with a normal throw. I see it as a more difficult, but equally effective and reliable (once you have it mastered) throw. It lets the handler throw over a defender and gives you that deep option even in a straight up mark.

@LastSecondHeroics I agree, he knows the throws, but his techniques are bad for in game. All of his throws are lofty and his hammer turns over way too soon. Oldschool players learned most of the throws, but they used them in different ways. As an ultimate player I never use anything other than backhand, flicking, and hammer. I feel that the other techniques are not needed if you have those three.

@Fashkill I'm the same way. Those are the only throws that I ever use in games, except I don't really even use hammers. I like knowing the other throws, but in a real game I'm going to rely on the more dependable throws.

the hammer isn't unpredictable at all. the only way it would be is if you didn't know how to throw it. i think it's one of the most accurate you can throw if you know what you're doing.
i'm also pretty sure that the names for these throws are regional. names vary from place to place.

There are a lot of throws that have different names depending on where you play. My school team calls it a thumber and a catch-toss (as opposed to a wristflip). We call the side arm throw he was referring to a forehand throw or flick. It really just depends on the people who taught you and who you play with.

im tellin u, its not the thumber, and the hammer and tomohawk are different, u have the disc flipped from a normal hammer and that is what a tomohawk is... it will then rotate over in the opposite direction, and allows it to go the opposite direction as a hammer.

z2a, you are correct in that the thummer is thrown right side up. What he is demonstrating is the INVERSE hammer. Its essentially the hammer just with the opposite curve. The thummer is thrown flat, not upside down, and it's generally a skilled high release forehand throw.

That is incorrect, the throw he demonstrates in the video was correctly named as a thumber. There may be other throws people refer to as thumbers as well, but I know for a fact that what you call an "inverse hammer" is a thumber

question: I've played ultimate for a few months now, twice a week, and I've always been told(and have read) that in the thumber, the disc is thrown right-side up and flies right-side up(unlike the hammer which is thrown vertically and then curves to end up upside-down). looked like you were showing it upside-down. thought i'd check

Hammer and the Wrist Flip (Ridge Hand or the Chicken Wing) are actually two very helpful throws.
However, even though the Hammer is a good throw, it is much more difficult for your target to catch.
And the Ridge Hand is a difficult throw to master, but can be helpful, especially if you break your hand and can only play with one hand. (Yeah, cannot hold back a true frisbee player... Even when he broke his hand he played for 1-1/2 more hours)

Ultimate was the first time that I ever felt cool playing a sport. It was a bright spot in an otherwise miserable and esteem crushing three years of middle school phys. ed. It was fun in college and now that I'm in shape again in my 30's, I'm psyched to play again.
If you can throw a frisbee, you can play it and have fun, even if there are some people far better than you out there on the field. I can kick a ball, but haven't the skills necessary to really enjoy soccer, imo.

Not a kid, but a man. And not fat but have played competitive soccer for 12 years. I played in a University Ultimate league for a few months thinking that it would be an interesting change to soccer. But after one month I loathed the game, mostly because of the people who played. Hey Captain logic, I said I played Ultimate for several months on a University team, that means I have probably played with and against HUNDREDS of ultimate players, all of which made me cringe. I am not judging the sport after throwing a frisbee once or twice with some stoners. If you play soccer for 3 months and f_ing loath every person on your team, everyone you played against and you hated the game itself, then I think its valid to come to a particular conclusion about the sport.

For Hammers, Scoobers and Thumbers you want to throw in a fashion that it does not flatten out as if your throw becomes flat and then switches (the curve) then curves further losing control (AKA Double Helixing) .
The hammer curves to the right and the thumber curves left assuming you are right handed.

the wrist flip is not BS. I have difficulty throwing a forehand or flicker but I can throw a wrist flip accurately and over long distances to compensate. It's just not a comfortable throw for most people.
