@Wouter112 Here in Spain, it is not allowed to use blue lights on emergency vehicles excepting on the law enforcement units. Most of the emergency services wants to change his vehicles' lights to blue, but they cannot because of the traffic laws.
@simstorial Not all do, but the idea behind two tones is that the human ear picks up on it better than a "wail" or "yelp" siren.
As it alternates the tones are easier to hear through noise and obstacles. It also travels further than the more modern siren types, which tend to just bounce off things.
Quite a few British ambulances now have directional speakers mounted on them, so if you're directly in front you'll get the full siren blast, or when behind it, you can't hear it much at all
@Someloke8895 Fair enough. I did encounter a British ambulance with a very loud siren from the front. I was travelling down my high street and there was an ambulance lit up and it just seemed louder than any other one that I have heard. I live near a hospital and I take my dog for a walk down there so I hear and see a lot of sirens and ambulances. It's actually rare to see them go down my local high street. Strange. But if you search: UKEScentral, you will find a few ambulance videos on there.
@simstorial It depends which Amb-service you have. Mine's Great Western Amb-service and they've started using these directional speakers.
Italy certainly uses two tones, as does, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Germany, France, Belgium and I think the Russians have a sort of hybrid yelp/two tone.
@Someloke8895 in Germany the normal siren is a two tone, very few got also some kind of wail/yelp and 3 tone. In Denmark you can hear wail/yelp sirens as much as two tones, and in Norway actually just wail/yelp
@malbert34 I think you have no idea ofthe resources of firefighters in Madrid. Has financing according to the needs of the city. Madrid has one of the best emergency services in Europe.
@091Madrid how long is the average response time for the FD in Madrid? I just know for example the Oslo Fire and Rescue Service (Norway) has to be on scene with 50 firemen within 5 minutes

Belgium uses Wail & Yelp by legal prefference but a 2-tone can often be encountered as well.

@091Madrid Except for the fire department of course! Quite frankly, it is a little shabby-looking due to inadequate funding.
