  • @Cedricfollyman It's such a shame you have to be such a perfectionist that it ruins just plain ENJOYMENT. Strange that the crowd enjoyed it immensely while you were picking gnat shit out of pepper. I always enjoy listening to Anna sing, and I have never once heard her "ruin the mood". Perhaps you can do better?

  • So she sings this piece with her own interpretation and her style of rubato. So what of it. Stop complaining. She's out making millions and having the career of her life, and you're sitting at home "knowing more" than the professionals.

  • @iltenoredramatico You have a point about free interpretation. However using the excuse of "musical interpretation" is no excuse for sloppy singing (I'm speaking as a singer who is currently learning the lied in question), and admittedly there is a fine line between artistic interpretation and soiling musical integrity. Everyone is entitled to a bad performance, it happens to the best of us, but making millions is no excuse for passing off sloppiness as art.

  • The lead violinist is quite annoying being in her face like that. Her voice could've sounded better, if it weren't for her poor phraseology. Her tongue is all twisted with too many differrent languages; from Italian to French, to Rusian and English-it's no wonder that proper German phrasing is lacking here. Often these singers try to perform in too many idiomatic reportories. Her German here doesn't sound authentic.

  • Brava!

  • WUNDERBAR !!!!

  • She's incredible ! Bravo BRAAVOO!! NETREBKO!

Schade :(

  • I tried to give this my best shot - it's a crowded field with the likes of Te Kanawa, Norman and, still, the sublime Gundula Janowitz. Netrebko's version is annoyingly under-rehearsed. Her phrasing is haphazard and, surprisingly, she has intonation problems. This is little more than a performance by a capable student. It's pretty but in the end meaningless and therefore eminently forgettable.

  • @Comodusprimus Oh thank you for saying this! I couldn't agree with you more.

  • Very pretty but i wish she would stop breaking the phrasing...she needs to take better breaths

  • This is so breathtaking!

  • If she had started up a fat monster and then transformed into a Swan in the progress like Callas she would be worshiped like a Deity.

  • This woman was the greatest victim of her Natural Beauty.

She is extremely talented musically and people have been over-looking that because she looks like a super model.

  • Strauss Lieder requires a singer who is in complete control always, A singer whose rhythm and timing is exact and in perfect syncopation with the Piano/orchestra. If the singer loses his/her timing for even the most brief moment, the whole phrase falls and the mood is ruined. Miss. Netrebko constantly falls behind the Orchestra- At times, taking pauses which do not apear in the written score, so she may indulge in the moment, thus ruining the mood. Her diction also leaves much to be desired

  • @Cedricfollyman I agree for the most part, however I find no issue with indulging in the moment or improvisation as long as it doesn't amount to inserting some "variations on a theme of" mess AND, more importantly, if it doesn't affect the phrasing, which she absolutely butchers in places here.

  • @tasteslikechicken55 For example the slight hold on "sonne" as opposed to observing the written 8th is not egregious and if executed correctly can be beautiful (a la Björling). However she holds it and, I'm assuming as a result, she cant even phrase it to "scheinen". This is all without mentioning the absolutely inexcusable break in the middle of "sonnenatmenden" and the break in the phrase at "stummes schweigen..."!

  • @tasteslikechicken55 I not all familiar with Netrebko's track record, but this performance tells me that something wasn't right, whether it was just not her day, not her song, general breath support issue, or jut biting off a little more than she could indulge in.

  • Her gown is gorgeous.

  • Die sängerische Darbietung ist geschmacklos

  • anna anna anna ppprrraaaccchhhtttiiiggg

  • I've heard better violinists.

  • JUSSI BJOERLING SURPASSES HER IN THIS SONG!!!

  • Her voice is beautiful. But her line is... well... not good.

  • Disappointed!

  • strange place to have breathe.

    operatic voice and sentencing.

    dress like Manon or Carmen.

in general, quite a bad taste for this beautiful lieder.

  • very kitsch...

  • Gorgeous woman!

  • Brava!

  • I love her voice and manner, she is unique, it's important, she doesn't need to be like others

  • @deeas89 Well -- it's true she doesn't have to be like others, but most of the others aren't like each other either. Difference alone is to be expected. But she does need to have an artistic feel for lieder, and she is lacking in that finesse completely. I don't think she understands the song musically, and the way she breaks phrases is only the beginning of it. And with this song any flaw is so exposed . . .

    (Her voice is delicious, though.)

  • @deeas89 But she needs to sing on pitch, which, in several places, she doesn't here

  • I have a feeling that if hear this live that it would be much better. You could hear it. It is still beautiful though :)

  • @spunkiesag12 I agree it's beautiful. I also like Wunderlich and Schwarzkopf renditions of this beautiful song. You also might want to listen to Nicholas Spanos's Morgen for comparison. It's very beautiful too.

  • The German she sings is ABYSMAL. This woman is a disgrace. Why the heck is she destroying all the phrases by breathing in the middle? What an awful technique. ORRORE!!!!!

  • @AfroPoli, Even by the first phrase one could tell… incredible. Truly terrible. But at least she is not partnering Calleja

  • Schmaltz, pure and simple, and it started with the fiddler.

  • @Onegiin

MORGEN is a very sensual and heart touching song, if you follow the lyrics. Noboby is able to sing this peace adequately as long as they are not able to understand and master the German language. There are a lot of recordings of MORGEN. Lotte Lehmann, Christine Schäfer as well as Jessy Norman grasp the essential message of this peace. (by the way, Norman speaks and understand German)

  • Anna is a breath of fresh air in the operatic world. Callas had a lot of enemies at her time too... only time will tell. I like Netrebko, she has a pretty voice and she a gorgeous woman... that makes people mad!

  • I can't even watch this.... OMG.

  • Absoluter Hörgenuß und Augenschmaus in einem !

  • @IaPfeffernase

  • i give anna credit..she may not be the best technical music but i think her dramatic intensity and mysteriousness makes up for it to some degree...always thought she didnt have any depth but ive changed my mind after hearing this.

  • This is an example of a terrible Lied singer. Hmmm try Felicity Lott. Only in Germany/Austria could they find this acceptable.

  • well the lied comes from germany so i guess they'll be right

  • nice and relaxing. joshua bell and anna netrebko sounds nice together.

  • A perfect pair.

  • What a beautiful composition!

  • A pure pleasure to listen from this song.

  • Genius!

  • Her tone floats from her mouth like a bird. Quite nice. Thanks for posting.

  • she's awesome!

  • Is this for real? Is this a dream? She's really one of a kind. Awesome!

  • Amazing! Her voice is so beautiful!

  • Two legends!

  • I'm inspired to watch her sing.

  • I'm deeply enchanted.

  • Gotta love youtube, where else can you find a great footage like this.

  • Yes, thanks to youtube.

  • i still don't know what to think of Netrebko...sometimes i really like her way of singing, sometimes i can't stand it. in this case, i don't really like it...

  • what a kitsch !

  • Las Vegas,sorry girl.

  • I don´t believe Strauss would have enjoyed Netrebko very much...

This is a poor version. Though it will probably be loved at the Proms, and in most opera pubs...

  • @ChristopherSPedersen How sad that you should think so little of Anna's rendition. You think all promenadas are not very selective ?

  • Stunning

  • beautiful woman, great violin Good Ana, Good....

  • If you want to hear somthing good you should watch renee´s version

  • Netrebko's performance was certainly better than i expected, though she appears not to give a great deal of attention to the relationship between the soprano/violin voices. This is especially obvious at "Werden wir still und langsam" (2:06). Way too much unnecessary 'rit.' - pure, egotistical indulgence.

  • I recommend vesione of Renèe Fleming.

She is so elegant and Feminine.

  • On comparing most of the YouTube's Morgen, even at 4 min, a number of comments deem it too fast in tempo. 3'40" was definitely on the fast side. Nevertheless, the work is a masterpiece, just enjoy it.......

  • She is vulgar

  • I agree, She just looking for her sensuality.

She is too vulgar for some opera.

She don't have belcanto technic and I think for that reason she can't sing in Italy.

  • This is so shallow, depthless, poor diction and no variety. Time for me to listen to Jessye Norman Morgen.

  • could´nt agree more with you. I think Anna Netrebko is over-rated. I just Morgen with Renee Fleming and it was by far a better version

  • Oh yeah, the most overrated and she's not even good enough. RIP Opera!

  • Yes Renée is a marvelous singer. l have heard her here in Barcelona, Lieders and operas.. Netrekko was over rated for being good looking. There are some MORGEN much, much better, , but she has very good managers, l don't believe that she is going to sing for much more, . But she is still a beautiful woman...

  • Hmmm. We all know the conducting power of Gergiev.

  • Yes. very known, but life is like that.

  • Gergiev is not the conductor.

  • blondzuher, Who do you think he is? mr Gergiev is one of the directors of Maryinsky theatre responsible for the artistic and musical performances, he is the most famous and talented conductor in the world as well.

  • She look beautiful.

  • idiots, it is a conversation between vioce and violin, dont make comments unless you really understand it.

  • She has to face the violin for the conversation.

  • I have never read such stupid comments, even on youtube where stupid comments abound. Obviously, it is important for them to stay together and the conductor needs to follow them. So what the hell is wrong with them looking at each other? This is the way she always looks.

  • This is really bad taste. She is a wonderful singer and more beautiful than one is able to comprehend AND I'm a big fan of her. But the concept of flirting with the violinist is so embarrassing I could hardly watch it to the end. Ultimately, I had to push the "pause" button. Save it for the opera, please.

  • She is not flirting with the violinist. She is just facing towards him.

  • She is gorgeous!

  • She is a great actress too.

  • she really is gorgeous

  • I can hear the nose clip.

  • She always sings with a nose clip. People can't see it but they can hear it.

  • whats this about a nose clip?

  • It's there, the air is trapped with a nose clip.

  • is it inside the nose?

I have never heard of this. can you presume i know nothing about it and explain...please?

  • it's there, it sounds tight. the air is limited and it sounds awful.

  • i think i see it...on the bridge of her nose...flesh coloured so difficult to spot.

  • R.I.P. STRAUSS

  • oh for god's sake

  • Ela conseguiu não me despertar nenhum sentimento.Parabéns a eles!

  • She didn't make it through the first phrase, took a catch breath there, The diction is pretty lousy and mooning to the violinist looks pretty stupid -it is not a duet and looking at the audience would make a tremendous difference. Maybe even the conductor, too.

  • She took a breath before the end of the first phrase! Her diction is lousy and mooning to the violinist really stupid it is not a duet, you're supposed to look at the audience, and the conductor once in a while might be a good idea too.

  • Bravo for Bell, Netrebko sings with too much Show an in Mimí or Violetta style!

  • People, she is flat in the first phrase!!!! I like her singing Puccini,WTF, her vibrato is too big for Strauss....and German diction means everything, because the composers cared just as much for the poem lyrics than the music that goes along with it....so ENUNCIATE so we know what the fuck you're singing about. god, she really frustrates me in this piece; and i hate the huge applause she gets. Zafireh, you are right. Elisabeth Schwarzkopt is my favorite singing this

  • @emilysd88 too big for strauss? Jessye Norman sings a lot of strauss and she is a true dramatic soprano. She has a much bigger voice than Anna.

  • from russia

  • I'm sorry, but I find it insufferably arrogant of her to stand on a stage and do that to Strauss.

  • This is not Rachmaninoff's Vocalise. You can't sing every song just going aaarararrraaarrr.... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suppose it's a German song, so you sing it in German, right?

Netrebko is treating Strauss's 'Morgan' like Ella Fitzgerald singing Weill's 'Mack the Knife'. This is not jazz, so forgive me for being mildly annoyed.

    :-(

  • Even native German people knowing the lyrics of that song by heart like me are not able to understand what she's singing here. Simply an inacceptable performance of a "Lied".

  • I don't know much about German diction or whatever, but I do enjoy this performance. There is always something to criticize in every performance. But there are definitely other things to appreciate.

  • what a strange performance

  • Netrebko ruined this!!!

I'm just appalled with how bad this really is!

  • Netrebko and Joshua Bell made love with Strauss, they created something unique and magic. That's art. Who cares about german diction? Does people around world all understand italian diction in opera? NO! But they are able to apreciate voices, art and vibe of singers.. So pls, less superficial comments and more ear MR Dem24utube, otherwise you cold appear ridicoulos..

  • No. Netrebko and bell had sex with each other and she was filled with hot cum at the end of the performance. :))

  • Who cares about german diction???? It´s everything!! Do you know Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, or Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau? please listen to them singing, or what they say in their masterclasses! Netrebko isn´t a good singer, and i just hatet her for her italian diction! but that she now sings (ruines) Strauss, is incredible! i think that a singer must be speak the language that he´s singing!

  • It's as if you believe that there is this absolute PERFECT voice, or an absolut PERFECT woman. But you know what: There is no such thing existing in the world, thank God! And Anna Netrebko is "perfect" because she has a VOICE, a human voice with all its flaws and beauty. When you define what a human being really is, maybe then you can truly enjoy this wonderful talent of hers.

  • Can't believe ppl's racism and snobbery in most of the comments about Anna Netrebko or other talented young singers. Is this some kinda club going around commenting bad thing of every single video of her on youtube? nothing better to do? You guys are so rude. I try to enjoy this wonderful singer's performances captured on film, I absolutely adore her. You are all jalous cause she is beautiful and has an encredible voice and stage presence. What else can the reason be?

  • The German is atrocious, the vibrato loose, and the intonation on the high side (because of the vibrato).

What chutzpah to touch such a jewel as this song.

And guess what--she's not that good looking either.

  • voice , her interpetation. Chutzpah ? Shes wonderfull. Snob

  • people who think they know everything are silly

  • I totally agree..

  • First, I confess to being a great fan of Netrebko & agree w/Her0sfan that musically this is one of the finest interpretations of this beautiful song!

But, alas, Ana, usually so well-prepared, seems to have neglected this one. She didn't even know most of the words and just faked her way through it.

I'm sure she got away with it since an English-speaking audience wouldn't know the difference. And her musicality, voice, personality, acting talent, Oh, and looks, are more than enough, aren't they?

  • Nope.

  • I agree

Her looks are not enough at all. It looks like shes got nice tits, but, call me old fashioned, that was a very affected performance. More affectation than art or talent. So I agree with the nope.

  • i agree with you! her german is so bad, her breathing in the wrong places and she actually is not a very good soprano, what she has is a serviceable voice, thats it. and her cheap outfit with matching ghastly necklace, yes they are inconsequential but netrebko has always capitalised on her (mediocre)appearance and not on (her even more mediocre) talent. very bad performance. joshua bell though is wondrous!

  • One of the best performances I've heard of this song, both violin and singer. I don't know German so can't comment on the diction, but musically, she suits this piece, and there is expression in every phrase, just likethe violin too.

  • I think she's an outstanding actress, has a natural beauty, but her phrasing in this performance isn't as good as she could be. She could do better. She's still an amateur in ways, but so much talent!

  • Funny thing is, thats one of the reasons she is so famous. Not for her voice, but for the fact that she looks like a porn star. Gross.

  • Hermoso!!

  • Compare that to Leontyne Price, that sings very well. Price voice is pretty good and refined, but she sings EVERY NOTE with the same intensity. Listen instead Netrebko, with a voice even more refined, how much variation in dinamic and timre, all related to the metric and "gestalt" of the melody. But the main honor of Netrebko is that she sings Verdi and Puccini with this voice too, she sings OPERA like SRAUSS LIEDER, not STRAUSS LIKE OPERA.

  • wow she is great

  • What happened here?a conspiracy of little unlittered? What a plethora of commonplaces:"she sings Verdi she can't sings Strauss".Why not? She already sings a Puccini refined like Strauss, and she can sing Strauss on the same level than Schwarzkopf (and only comparable whith her).Do you have ears to listen the diminuendo at the end? Pronunciation is not ALL for a singer. Study music! :-)

  • Anna Netrebko does't need to be able to do EVERYTHING! She's good at Italian Belcanto and can excel there. Strauss Lieder are a category so completely of their own, that very very few singers have not only the talent but most important the right voice to soar endlessly over a full orchestra without sounding the slightest bit strained. This music is so wrong for Anna N. as Chinese Opera would be. It's the same thing as if TeKanawa would sing Rossini. Unnecessary.

  • No artists have ever delivered Strauss's intentions of character more eloquently than these two. The interaction and conversation between the two is unparalleled. Any gripe that one may have with Mrs. Netrebko's German is excused, in my opinion, due to her exquisite phrasing.

  • Hahaha. Well said.

  • Even Jassye Norman take a breath at the end and Schwartzkopf one word before.Who critics Anna is an unlearned donkey and is against western culture.

  • Please, Anna Netrebko is not prepared for to sing lieder. Sorry, but definitely no.

  • Bravo, Laeliapurpurata! There are the composers and songs that has NOT TO BE TOUCHED by certain kind of singers. If one wants to masturbate he can do it at home.

  • I agree.

  • Funny........

  • Comment removed

  • It was a music from above....

  • The German was absolutely terrible. Even Bell's playing was a bit too self-indulgent for my taste. She has a fine enough voice, and is certainly nice to look at. However, her talent lies in other repertoire. Definately not lieder.

  • Bravo Mr. Bell!!!

  • All I can hear is her inexcusably bad German.

  • It's a pity that her breathing is not good.

(between "wieder" and "scheinen" in line one.

And between "stummes" and "Schweigen" in the last line). Her German pronunciation is not good too. But her voice has a very beautiful sound. Maybe she needs lessons or feedback.

  • ridiculous!

  • Whatever Anna did that evening she held the boisterous, but knowledgeable, proms audience in the palm of her hand. This was just part of an audaciously varied programme, all of which was memorable. Brava Anna! Come back again!

  • audra086 you must be blind and deaf

  • What a clutch of sad people.Netrebko may have a short term career but it is more to do with our disposable society than her.Yes Xqain you will no doubt have your usual say.We demand things of people in all walks of life that are unattainable, what for one person is a joy to listen to is to others a jangle of noise. What I feel is lacking on these sites is what Philosphers term "charity "which allows for others to be right in their own viewpoint even although it differs to ours.

  • Interesting. What I find lacking are logic and punctuation.

  • Interesting .What I find lacking is ethical honesty and integrity.

  • What is that incessant noise that continually interrupts the soloist? Is it a soprano?
