It's not Arnel's fault that the band is asking him to try to sound like Steve Perry. They did the same with Steve Augeri. Watch the Behind the Music show, when they said that they were amazed when they first heard Augeri singing because they thought it was Steve Perry with a perm. That's been the sound they've been looking for after Steve left. They are creating the illussion that Steve is singing. That's why I feel sad for Arnel, because even when talking he's trying to sound like Steve.

Soul isn't purely from the frontman (vocalist) it comes from the band too. Without the rest of the band Steve Perry would not have been as successful. Look at his solo career flatten. That's why he came back with this song. No Singer defines a band its a combination of them all.
I always laugh to myself when I read 99% of the comments on videos that are Arnel Pineda videos so you would think most people would praise him. They almost always write that Steve Perry is so much better than Arnel which in my opinion is so true. bottom line, he's NOT steve perry. He is an amazing singer with an amazing voice. unless steve perry goes back in time 25 years, its not gonna get any better than that. he's a great replacement for one of the greatest singers in rock history. always been a Journey fan, since their debut album. love the changes and i'll always liste to them.
Perry sent materials recently to Journey. Still sings with the same voice. Journey rejected. Don't want to go through hell again with SP. Steve Perry gave the band such a hard time. Heck, he fired everybody - two drummers (one Steve Smith - Berklee-trained - can't get any better than this dude), the bass player -Ross Valory - you can't get any better than this guy, the Manager, etc. So moody. Journey proved Steve Perry was not bigger than the band.

There are songs from Journey that Steve never got to sing live...like this one. I love Steve in the 80's..but would i pay money to see him live now...not a chance. Arnel is the best journey frontman now..and from what i've seen so far..he can hold his own. True that an original is irreplaceable...but to hear something live as close as it was then...its a treat.
I have listened to the Steve Perry Journey for far too long to enjoy hearing anyone else sing HIS songs. Arnel may be good but give me SP anyday. If he was still in the group I would definitely buy tickets to a concert.

Well, come to think of it, Perry was a good Rober Fleischman cover singer so I guess Arnel is in good company. Study the band's history first before making any comments.
Fleischman wasn't necessarily kicked out because he didn't have any talents. It was more like they had disagreements with whatever issues they had. And even if he only had a short stint he definitely contributed to the band's storied history. And besides, the major point is that Perry himself also "MIMICKED" his predecessor to use his own fans' logic when they diss Arnel, coz he recorded Fleischman's co-written songs on the Infinity album and even sang them throughout his career w/ the band.
It's laughable for all Steve Perry fans to suggest that he's still have the "voice". The reason he's not singing or recording these days is because he's done...his voice is "cracked". It happens as we all get older. I would love to see Steve come out with new songs...but I think it would be a big mistake. His legacy is made...just walk away.
I wish people would stop dumping on this guy. He's a good singer. Think of the position he's in, trying to replace Steve Perry, a singer who's epic voice made these songs famous. I think he's a good replacement, even though he lacks the emotion Perry brought to the table.

Perry's only performance of this song was in a studio with master recording. What you're hearing with Arnel Pineda is a LIVE performance. He made the song sound too emotional coz he's singing from the heart. Good Job!

I studied music though I must admit I need more room for its mastery. Need to point out 2 things with regard to AP:1) u can"t control vibrato. Ur vocal cords become constrained if you try, thus, your voicebecomesvery unnatural. He sings with good vibrato because that's the quality of his voice. It's innate in how he sings.2) "since the whole point is to sound like Perry"--I love SP. But in this situation, this poor guy is now left in a damned if u do & don't situation.

@cridecar arnel pineda can sing with his natural voice since he was 4 years but he must sound like SP because it is his job to hit the notes of SP old, Arnel Pineda can morph his voice into exact copies of hundreds of the greatest voices in recent history of music. . When he sings a cover song, he is able to convey the emotion of the original artist. As for me, I just love hearing the golden voice of Arnel singing any song.

I think Journey is in great shape with Arnel at the mic. I saw them live at the third Honolulu show back in March before I moved, and let me say that Arnel is absolutely awesome live.
I might get to see them again in August, and I am crossing my fingers that they'll play this song and Why Can't This Night Go On Forever. I REALLY want to hear that song played live, although I don't think they've played that song since the Raised On The Radio tour.

We do all know the SP is the best, that's a fact.. But i think Arnel did a good job singing this song.. As long as you had a heart singing the song it will come out good.. Arnel himself said he used to sing Chaka Khan's, "Through the Fire" in his younger days( imagine how high his voice were, singing in a female pitch) but he couldn't do it anymore coz he's older now. Figure it out with Perry now that he's 60. I don't think he's still capable of singing the way he did before. I love Perry too and will always do but he's gone.. hope he'll come back though! Right now, its Arnel I adore, coz he's bringing back the music of Journey even better... so let's enjoy it!

it's just a sad fact that Steve Perry did quit and left the fans wondering what happened.Journey on the other hand has it's own share of mistakes by doing endless and tireless touring which took its physical toll to some former members(Perry and Augeri).I just take my hat off to this new guy doing a great job even though he is being bombarded with scrutiny and unfair criticisms.
I agree axel, but I think that pple. forget the criticism that SP had to also endure, probably even more-so than AP. W/ the addition of SP, JRNY's sound took a DRASTIC turn, alienating the majority of their fan base, albeit small...but nevertheless loyal. Critics saw this as 'selling out'. And by their own admission, even the band (at first) didn't want him there. Comparatively speaking, 'his' JRNY initiation was even tougher. Not saying that's a reason for AP's scrutiny...it's just life.

It's not Arnel's fault that the band is asking him to try to sound like Steve Perry. They did the same with Steve Augeri. Watch the Behind the Music show, when they said that they were amazed when they first heard Augeri singing because they thought it was Steve Perry with a perm. That's been the sound they've been looking for after Steve left. They are creating the illussion that Steve is singing. That's why I feel sad for Arnel, because even when talking he's trying to sound like Steve.

Soul isn't purely from the frontman (vocalist) it comes from the band too. Without the rest of the band Steve Perry would not have been as successful. Look at his solo career flatten. That's why he came back with this song. No Singer defines a band its a combination of them all.

I always laugh to myself when I read 99% of the comments on videos that are Arnel Pineda videos so you would think most people would praise him. They almost always write that Steve Perry is so much better than Arnel which in my opinion is so true. As someone else wrote without Steve Perry there would not even be a band called Journey for Arnel Pineda to be the lead singer of because before Steve Perry they were not getting radio play.

Perry sent materials recently to Journey. Still sings with the same voice. Journey rejected. Don't want to go through hell again with SP. Steve Perry gave the band such a hard time. Heck, he fired everybody - two drummers (one Steve Smith - Berklee-trained - can't get any better than this dude), the bass player -Ross Valory - you can't get any better than this guy, the Manager, etc. So moody. Journey proved Steve Perry was not bigger than the band.

There are songs from Journey that Steve never got to sing live...like this one. I love Steve in the 80's..but would i pay money to see him live now...not a chance. Arnel is the best journey frontman now..and from what i've seen so far..he can hold his own. True that an original is irreplaceable...but to hear something live as close as it was then...its a treat.

Fleischman wasn't necessarily kicked out because he didn't have any talents. It was more like they had disagreements with whatever issues they had. And even if he only had a short stint he definitely contributed to the band's storied history. And besides, the major point is that Perry himself also "MIMICKED" his predecessor to use his own fans' logic when they diss Arnel, coz he recorded Fleischman's co-written songs on the Infinity album and even sang them throughout his career w/ the band.

It's laughable for all Steve Perry fans to suggest that he's still have the "voice". The reason he's not singing or recording these days is because he's done...his voice is "cracked". It happens as we all get older. I would love to see Steve come out with new songs...but I think it would be a big mistake. His legacy is made...just walk away.

Please folks, dont make this a competition between Journey and Steve because it is not. If the original guys from Journey can still sing and sound just as great as they did 15 years ago I do believe Mr Perry would too. Or are you guys telling me hes the only one that cant sing anymore from Journey. The others are up there in age too. Arnel is the same age as perry was when they did the trial by fire album and his voice was amazing. If it wasnt they would of not been ready to go on tour and they were!

Perry's only performance of this song was in a studio with master recording. What you're hearing with Arnel Pineda is a LIVE performance. He made the song sound too emotional coz he's singing from the heart. Good Job!

I studied music though I must admit I need more room for its mastery. Need to point out 2 things with regard to AP:1) u can"t control vibrato. Ur vocal cords become constrained if you try, thus, your voicebecomesvery unnatural. He sings with good vibrato because that's the quality of his voice. It's innate in how he sings.2) "since the whole point is to sound like Perry"--I love SP. But in this situation, this poor guy is now left in a damned if u do & don't situation.

@cridecar arnel pineda can sing with his natural voice since he was 4 years but he must sound like SP because it is his job to hit the notes of SP old, Arnel Pineda can morph his voice into exact copies of hundreds of the greatest voices in recent history of music. . When he sings a cover song, he is able to convey the emotion of the original artist. As for me, I just love hearing the golden voice of Arnel singing any song.

I think Journey is in great shape with Arnel at the mic. I saw them live at the third Honolulu show back in March before I moved, and let me say that Arnel is absolutely awesome live.
I might get to see them again in August, and I am crossing my fingers that they'll play this song and Why Can't This Night Go On Forever. I REALLY want to hear that song played live, although I don't think they've played that song since the Raised On The Radio tour.

What alot of people don't realize is that steve augeri was with journey longer than steve perry, Fact. I personally didn't like him as much as the present singer arnel. I don't see what the big fuss is all about! ...SP never even sang this song live ever.. and of course he has more soul in his voice on Trial by Fire, but come on... they wrote the damn thing together, that is where the heart felt comes from.. Arnel does a perfectly good job at this song.. sang every note perfectly, as he usually does with every song he sings. I'd like to see anyone else go up there for 2 hours a night, 6 days a week for a year straight and do as good as him ;-)

Dude, I respect Perry with my whole life as a singer... all I am saying, is that when I listen to the entire Trial by Fire album all the way through... its just not the same.. He sounds like he is struggling the entire time.. When you love a woman is the 1 out of about 3 songs on the album that he sounds non-strained.. that's all I'm saying.. his last solo album tour was tuned down a half step, and most of his high parts were compromised.. I'm just trying to say that Arnel deserves respect.

It's like wishin for the moon for Perry to return. 1) his voice had changed with age, we should accept that 2) he can no longer do concerts in the long haul because of the first 3) he got out when fans still love him than continue touring and hate him when he can no longer sustain that voice quality (that's what he is afraid of, wouldn't you if you are SP?) That's why I love Journey, they want to give us good music and through Arnel they still could.!!!!!

arqwelder, i guess its safe to assume you've been living under a rock fot the last 2 yrs. Their revelation album was a certified hit. Their concert has been very succesful and the band is very in demand.Their currently in their euro tour.Also he did not replace SP, he did however took over for Jeff scott sotto, who took over for STEVE AUGERI,The very person who replaced STEVE PERRY AND did a wonderful job for 7 yrs b4 he got ill. Check your facts DUDE!!!. NUFF SAID.

Oh great what's next, a Karaoke Singer for Rick Springfield to rebuild his 80's career? This new guy may sound like SP, but has NONE of the essence that made Journey rule. Bad move by the band. They should have held out for SP when he had hip surgery & then "Trial By Fire" & every album that followed would have ruled the world again!....Nuff Said...

This people who keeps looking for SP just don't get friggin get it. Say, SP rejoined this group and went on successful tour. Great!!!!!! but its not gonna happen in your lifetime coz SP's vocal chord is done.....meanwhile, the rest of the band are struggling to release new materials and the bills are piling up. They're humans too, just like the rest of us,concerns about your future, family and everything in between and you dont want anyone but SP on the front.

Arnel himself said he used to sing Chaka Khan's, "Through the Fire" in his younger days( imagine how high his voice were, singing in a female pitch) but he couldn't do it anymore coz he's older now. Figure it out with Perry now that he's 60. I don't think he's still capable of singing the way he did before. I love Perry too and will always do but he's gone.. hope he'll come back though! Right now, its Arnel I adore, coz he's bringing back the music of Journey even better... so let's enjoy it!

PakDae Han, you have so much hate in your heart. Of course, Arnel can't sing it like Perry coz he's not him! He was just asked by Journey to sing their old songs to continue the LEGACY, that's why he was hired. Why don't you listen to Journey's new songs in their new album ? That's Arnel's real voice! I bet, even Steve himself can't sing these songs now the way he sounded before. We change as we grow older especially our voices. Let's face it , he's old and no longer with Journey, so move on!

I spoke to many people that know steve and they are said arnel's voice just does not match this song!!!! only steve could sing this song flawlessly!!! not arnel.

ap is a lot hotter...b/c he got a manly voice sound better than the previous lead. thats my prefer to ap is the best for journey...to carry on the legacy without letting it die forever.

Watching Arnel up close and personal felt like your under spell ! There's a magic in his voice that grab and put you in a trance. Heavenly!!!!
The best vids. of this performance is the one by JETTLAG. Pay attention to the very last notes and Arnel's priceless delivery of it. Nobody can top that!!!!!

it's just a sad fact that Steve Perry did quit and left the fans wondering what happened.Journey on the other hand has it's own share of mistakes by doing endless and tireless touring which took its physical toll to some former members(Perry and Augeri).I just take my hat off to this new guy doing a great job even though he is being bombarded with scrutiny and unfair criticisms.

I agree axel, but I think that pple. forget the criticism that SP had to also endure, probably even more-so than AP. W/ the addition of SP, JRNY's sound took a DRASTIC turn, alienating the majority of their fan base, albeit small...but nevertheless loyal. Critics saw this as 'selling out'. And by their own admission, even the band (at first) didn't want him there. Comparatively speaking, 'his' JRNY initiation was even tougher. Not saying that's a reason for AP's scrutiny...it's just life.
