LOVE the old DC-3/C-47... my grandmother was a riveter for Douglas at the plant in Oklahoma City during WWII. She worked on the wing sections. I've been a pilot for a bunch of years now, but before I die, I WILL get typed in the DC!!

there is a DC3 around, I think more than one, that have been re-egined with turboprops. this extends the life of the airframe and lowers the costs of maintenence. They can buy a new motor and fit it for less than the cost of rebuilding the radial. Better fuel economy and lower operating costs another benefit. all that is lacking is the right sound :)

My aspiration, prior to retiring from the military, was to own the cargo version (C-47) of one of these so I could throw a car and a bike in and go anywhere I wished. While I was in Somalia there were two of these provided by the Russians. That was when I learned you could still buy a brand new one from Russia. Thanks to Lend Lease they were permitted to manufacture them under license. They never quit building them after WWII.

Our "Mosquito Control" fleet were all DC3's down in the Florida Keys

up until about 10 years ago and they used to fly at treetop level all

the time. Miss the sound of the old piston-engine "Gooney Birds".

Nothing ever built like them for safety and handling. When you have

planes built in the 1930's that still fly perfectly well and are serviceable

after 60 YEARS its proof these were some awesome aircraft!

i have always wondered... if the gear doesnt go down an a dc3 can you just land on the wheels in the stowed position? i know the props will die...

@gibbo1112 The landing gears on a DC-3 do retract, the bottom part of the wheels are still visible when they have been taken up. So no, you can't land a DC-3 without having your landing gear down unless you want to damage the props, and do a risky belly landing.

Wonderful sound. In 1971-72, I worked in Lae, New Guinea and the door of my workshop looked out on to the inland end of Lae Airport's runway. Everything that flew into and out of there went past my door, including the TAA and Ansett DC3s. I could tell the sound of them without needing to run to the door.

Never hear of this being referred to as "The Gooney Bird". Primarily a nickname for the military C-47 version, they are identical except for the addition of a cargo door in the C-47.

An older gentleman that I used to fly with would let me copilot for short flights around the Midwest. Always referring to it as the Gooney Bird and the cylinders as "Jugs", some of my fondest memories of piloting are of that little gentleman and the Gooney Bird.

My Dad flew this airplane during the Berlin Airlift. When he retired from the Navy he went on to fly cargo for Tiger Air in Alaska, among several other carriers. When he quit flying he had over 17,000 hours as a DC-3 Captain. What an awsome aircraft.
