Donkey Kong looks like he's frowning. he's all like: "Oh, I know Jumpman is going to kill me so i'm just going to throw barrels and just stand here like a puts and do nothing. :( "
@daninotmyself Becuase this is Classic Game Room . . . CLASSIC Game Room. He reviews classic games along with with new ones. Besidees, this game was freaking awesome back when it came out, and it was the first game Mario as ever in.
2600 version better? OUTRAGEOUS! I can play this version for hours on end - It's a good cart to play for Hi Score - I can do 4 hundred thousand + on a good game. The only thing I can fault this for is missing 3rd level. I like the controling of Mario here.
@phrixil True, and that reminded me that back then, Arcade games were what PC games are today. Think about it. Back then, every company was trying to match the power of the average Arcade Cabinet, and in general Arcade Boards were more technically impressive than any system on the market. Now, the PC is always one step ahead: If you have an ultimate PC it's more powerful than a PS3 or Xbox 360, neither of those could run Crysis on max settings. Newer consoles will probably try to match PC too...
Besides being packed in with the ColecoVision, this is a bit of a history making game in another respect. RetroVGamer is right. Since the ColecoVision was the first home console to have graphics that truly began to approximate the original arcade version, and because this game was packed with it, Donkey Kong for the ColecoVision is the first home console game ever that looked the way we usually think of when we think of console video games, our first ever sign of hope for good graphics.
I remember being 9 years old and this ad coming on during the break in Happy Days. Now remember at that time no Arcade home ports looked even close to the their Arcade counterparts. It was just the norm back then. The Arcades were superior and home games were second rate quality. So then I see this ad for Donkey Kong on Coleco Vision. I couldn't believe what I was seeing! That can't be the home version! Now to me back then it looked identical to the Arcades, but today I see the flaws.
Hey Mr. Mark seeing this review it really makes me strongly urge you to try out the Donkey Kong Country Games for the SNES/ Virtual Console or even the new Donkey Kong Country Returns for the WII, I believe you'll like it...
Visually its very good. Its missing the pie factory level and donkey kong is on the wrong side on the first board. I've heard the best version is on the Atari 8-bit computers and has been ported over to the 5200. It supposedly better than even the NES port. Of course the arcade version on emulators is going to be the best non-port.
They should have called this game Donkey Kong Shlong! Great game review. I liked the commentary, but it could have been a bit more free association. There also could have been more use of the word "shlong." Thanks for putting this together.
Which console version would be the best version to get for Wii homebrew? You can emulate most of the old consoles but I don't know which one is closest to the arcade.
it was way too easy on the colecovision, i go from the store demo to the arcade at the mall & get killed easily. Mario's movement is rough & that 2 note sound for his movement was brainwashing, you'd go to bed that night & still hear it.
@vargulf19 anyone indeed can complete a game today, because theres virtually NO penalty for death. you just respawn an infinate amount of times.....and really cant fail them
older games are much harder, faster and less forgiving with mistakes....give a 14 year old call of duty player a retro game, itll completly kick thier ass. also the fact that you had lives and limited amount of continues in old games, and it wasnt always so easy to earn them, made the already hard game, harder
@AdGarUK It's not mirrored, it's just that the first level has one less platform than the arcade version (5 instead of 6), so Donkey Kong ends up on the right hand side. I think this is due to resolution limitations of the console, in this case meaning that to get the graphics looking ok (not all squashed up) they took the platform out. This was done on a couple of other ports of Donkey Kong as well.
It would be three years before Nintendo's NES hit North America and the company established itself as a console manufacturer here. Before then, it wasn't at all uncommon to find Nintendo titles on the popular platforms of the day. The ColecoVision Donkey Kong was one of the better ports.
Well i do have a 360 so i dont particuly hate new games, but i am a huge retro fan and love games like this. Im 36 so these are the games i grew up with. One question to Mark. If your running out of console games to review, why dont you look at the Amiga, Atari St, Amstrad, Spectrum, oh and do more C64 reviews. Please.
I'm pretty sure this was a launch title for the Colecovision and came packed with the system. In 1982 this was so much better than Atari 2600 or Intellivision.
This version is OK. I used to play it when I owned a Coleco Vision back in 1982, but I don't like the skipping of the little skits that occur when you beat a stage. It doesn't give you any sense of accomplishment. What you get is a repetitive cycle of boredom.
my rating for this game is: 3/10, because this is just plain unimpressive, it doesn't look like Donkey Kong. btw this is on Colecovision? I expected an almost identical version of the arcade port.
With the NES version. They had it ported to the GBA too. That or if you just happen to have Animal Crossing (for the GameCube in case no one else knew that themselves), it has that in it once you get it.
I don't have anything against it, but I've never really liked the Coleco Vision. I didn't like the ataries except asteroids. I LOVED the NES. I still have one and I play that more than I play the wii. But my fave donkey kong is th arcade version. That one I fell it the hardest of them all, which makes it fun. But like I said earlier, I have nothing against Coleco Vision.
Dunno why, but I always liked this classic version better than the one on NES and Gameboy Advance. Even though the color on the ColecoVision wasn't as bright or shiny, and the characters were a bit more pixelated... I just remember having so much fun playing the Coleco version of it... perhaps classic just never die! Q:)
'in many cases the Coleco dominates the Atari and in many cases the Nintendo versions of arcade games' - what games does the Coleco do better than the NES ?
This title was sold separately during 1983-84 for those people who already bought a Coleco Adam computer and wanted this title on cartridge, even though there was already the so-called Super version (with the pie factory board) on data pack available for the Adam.
I agree, Game and Watch, man that brings back memories. Need to track one of those down again. I love the old commericals. " a cigarette case?" no it's a Game and Watch!
Yeah, I thought this version of DK was the shiznit when I was nine, but now I can see that 7800 had better graphics & gameplay (although Coleco's sound still crushes the 7800).
What's surprising is that Nintendo never made a 100% arcade version on their own systems. Instead, time and time again, it's just a rehashed, inferior version of the NES port. The best home port I know of (for the day) was for the Commodore 64.
I never remembered a version where Jump Man...err...Mario (showing my age, there.) could fall off a platform and survive. (At least, until Game Boy came along.)
the reason why the two versions are inferior to the intelivision is because the company who was responsible for the ports was the same company that made the intelivision just to let ya know
Yeah, the controller's joystick was just too stiff.
I was going to say the 5200 controller was bad, but then I got into Intellivision and Colecovision. The controllers on both of them just... well, I'll leave it at that. It makes me greatful for the NES controllers, lol.
Yeah honestly I don't understand why it was so hard for them to develop decent hardware. A keypad should be an obvious no no. It's a videogame not a calculator.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
One point here: You mentioned that the Atari 7800 version "outperforms" the Coleco version. Keep in mind that the Atari 7800 was much more powerful and had more memory than the ColecoVision, and programming techniques had improved significantly since then.
That's true of a lot of Coleco games that were also released on Atari platforms. Coleco's sound chip was arguably more primitive than the sound chip in the 7800, but the programmers tended to put it to better use. I never really liked the "Atari sound" that much, honestly - not until their arcade games started using the Pokey + FM Synth combination.
this is so fucking funny i am watching a documantary "king of kong" about a man who wants to take the new world record of the arcade version ofthis game xD
The game is especially touchy when using an original Colecovision controller. That controller is almost like the Wii remote: it takes ALOT of practice.
Donkey Kong, Pepper 2, BC2 Grogs Revenge, Tarzan, ect ect, colecovision had so many great games! I have a system that still works, though it acts up a lot. Just age. I found a game store in my area that deals with these old systems. Gonna get it repaired! I really dislike online emulators! They suck and it's just not the same! Anyone gamer born between 1975 and 1986 who doesn't appreciate these old systems should die and go to hell lol!
You need to find the Adam Computer version of Donkey Kong. It was the best and hardest version of all. It had the most creative levels and best gameplay with better music.
I had nearly all of the Coelicovision games and this cartridge was among them.. The reviewer is right in what he says, there is something not quite right with this version of DK. Still a good game at the time and a good retro game now.
Well, yeah, the NES version is better, but this game came out 3 years before the Famicom did. Both consoles had Donkey Kong as their launch title.
As for the Colecovision, it most definitely didn't suck. At the time it was the best console on the market, with tons of great arcade ports. The controllers are a bit stiff, and hurt your hand after extended play sessions, but you get used to them.
What, did you just watch AVGN too much, or something?

One point here: You mentioned that the Atari 7800 version "outperforms" the Coleco version. Keep in mind that the Atari 7800 was much more powerful and had more memory than the ColecoVision, and programming techniques had improved significantly since then.

Boy, try to address a point of weakness in the video and everyone jumps down your throat. Real friendly crowd here, huh?

ColecoVision has much better sound though. It actually sounds kinda like the arcade version, unlike the 7800 version.
MajorasWrath97 2 years ago 2
That's true of a lot of Coleco games that were also released on Atari platforms. Coleco's sound chip was arguably more primitive than the sound chip in the 7800, but the programmers tended to put it to better use. I never really liked the "Atari sound" that much, honestly - not until their arcade games started using the Pokey + FM Synth combination.

The C64 version was far superior conversion than the Coleco and it also contained the factory level.
Tanas666 2 years ago
too true, the commodore 64 versions of games were always superior. not just donkey kong, but mario bros as well

CampBreezyBeach 2 years ago
I didn't know anybody else who had an Adam Coputer a while ago! You are totally right! That is the best version.
puppetmaster983 2 years ago
I had nearly all of the Coelicovision games and this cartridge was among them.. The reviewer is right in what he says, there is something not quite right with this version of DK. Still a good game at the time and a good retro game now.
theglitterband 2 years ago
1:17 - I just couldn't beaty this level.
I didn't know Donkey Kong was on ColecoVision for a game console I heard that sucked.
I think the NES version is better.
5 stars.
ElricSowrd 2 years ago
Well, yeah, the NES version is better, but this game came out 3 years before the Famicom did. Both consoles had Donkey Kong as their launch title.
As for the Colecovision, it most definitely didn't suck. At the time it was the best console on the market, with tons of great arcade ports. The controllers are a bit stiff, and hurt your hand after extended play sessions, but you get used to them.
What, did you just watch AVGN too much, or something?
