  • A better quality closedown from the same day is available here: watch?v=zVoxgHD8ZvU&list=PLE5BE64543EFECE98&index=138&feature=plpp_video

  • Not a bad video but to be honest I remember when BBC One closed down for the very last time on Sunday 9th November 1997 during the very early hours of the day about 5 minutes past three 0 clock in the morning due to what the announcer said at 0:00 I remember this last and final BBC One Closedown from Sunday 9th November 1997 I remember seeing that a very long time ago I love these old BBC One Trailers and Balloon Idents but I do remember this Last and Final BBC One Closedown at 0:00 its amazing

  • What a disastrous occasion

  • was this recorded with a banana?

  • 1997 was when the british empire ended

  • @Owen4004: Not really, we still own 16 other countries (and I'm not talking about the Commonwealth Realms)

  • 9th November 1997?

  • the bbc was the last tv channel to go 24hrs the rest

did thiers years earlier it was an way of diversifying

channels from 6am - 12 am to now around the clock with hourly news

teleshopping open university lastly interactive shows and programs

for the deaf alongside repeated omnibuses and late night films.

  • I put it to the insomniacs that even if you cannot sleep, TV is probably the worst of the four possible choices of TV, reading, internet or radio so with that said, I doubt too many would care if TV did shut down around midnight - 2 AM.

  • Ah that frlipping baloon. Somedays i always wished somebody would've punctured it

  • Chums, this is a channel to celebrate technical presentation history in the UK and around the world. If you want to discuss politics or licence fees or whatever, can I suggest the Digital Spy forums, where the same old pros and cons are rotated ad nauseum and probably will be for ever and ever. Thank you. And now we return you to the testcard and some music. Word.

  • They shouldn't play this national anthem praising an unelected head of state. We can't have a democracy in the UK whilst we have a Monarchy. Why should I bow and scrape to them? What have they done to earn that? Why should I sing about a God I don't believe in? I see most of them as parasites anyway. Like it or not, for good or for bad, News 24 is here to stay. The world has moved on since 1997. Times change. We can't go back to closedowns anymore.

  • Rubbish, It's the historic anthem of the country commemorating the British history celebrating something that has existed in our country for 1000 years.

  • @kanenkitten Yes, so very British, celebrating being ruled by a group of GERMAN, unelected parasites. Saxo-Gotha or whatever it is.. good old fashioned English named that isn't it?

  • @Kevinasp: Hardly a parasite when they contribute to the economy.

  • @Kevinasp You're forgetting that a large proportion of the British people are basically German, unelected parasites. So it works.

  • I remember my old man would fall asleep drunk infront of the TV, you'd hear the closedowns with the God save the queen, then the "white noise" would begin.... always woke me up... Prick.

chhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhzzzzzzzzzzzzzzhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (my impression of white noise)

  • bbc2 closes down during the night when bbc1 changes to bbc news 24

  • BBC 1 like R4 should play the athem before bbc news, R4 hand to the world service after the anthem.

  • Bring back closedown, tv isn't watched at night, we are all in bed.

  • @MrDayday58 what about people who work at night? Hell I watch the news sometimes after I watch a really terrifying film late at night so I dont go to bed with the last thing i saw being a gored head on a stick.

  • Every station should be doing this at 1 am anyway- if rthe government was really that concerned with saving energy, they could impose it- who the hell stays up all night watching it anyway? even if you had insomnia- the drivel that is on in the early hours would soon put you to sleep!!

  • @medicdeano With modern television and radio transmitters, it saves money to keep them on continuously rather than close them down.

  • @medicdeano Shift workers?

  • I remember this. Thank you for posting the good old days.

  • Now every channel is supposedly running 24 hours yet by 3am almost every channel on Sky is clogged with teleshopping, phone-in gambling or bloody Babestation style crap which is only going to be enjoyed by teenagers who really should be in bed by then anyway. Even ITV has bloody QVC on just after midnight! It's the modern version of the closedown and even is less watchable than Jobfinder was. Either give us night owls decent TV to watch like you used to or just go back to closedowns.

  • I love seeing stuff like this, along with the PIFs and clips of stuff like "Hitman & Her". It's nice to be reminded just how much we're being conned by supposedly "24 hour" TV. Back in the days leading up to the time closedowns were phased out, channels seemed desperate to stay open as long as possible and still get the late night viewers, so we were treated to all kinds of weird and wonderful telly you just didn't get at any other time, with obscure US drama / comedy, and clubbing shows

  • how about they dont have the closedown or bbc news 24 why dont they have actual programmes preferably films through the night and dont tell me nobodys watching theres always people up

  • Thats when I knew the world was coming to the end.

No lovely anthem at three in the morning on sunday, when I was pissed outta my skull, telling me how great it was to be British.

give me back my license fee

  • @Doomsday2060

    Agree indeed.

  • Nowadays people don't have time to hear any anthems. Theys just want to get the news and the complain about them.

  • They should play the national anthem before going to the BBC News channel.

  • @Medeasbiggestfan I totally agree with you.

  • @Medeasbiggestfan oooh no the BBC daren't do that it might offend people who aren't British. Well that's what 13 yrs of Blair and Brown has done to the national psyci. Most non-brits couldn't care less if the national anthem or the archers theme is played but the wining white left wing middle classes got their way.

  • @Medeasbiggestfan They may bring back the anthem prior to the analog switchoff in 2012 and during the Olympics.

  • @j4lambert Is it no already switched off ?

  • @Medeasbiggestfan AGREED.

  • did used to suck getting in and looking at a test card when your full of booze

  • Why? Because they provide a higher quality service than any other broadcaster in the WORLD???

The BBC is well-known worldwide, to lose it would have a dramatic (and in some cases, fatal) effect on other broadcasters.

  • I know''..that the bbc do a good thing most of the time,,..I'm sorry to say I'm well at odds with this now after the last 2weeks I have had, Do you work for the bbc?..After this so called switch over.. I mean switch off!,..I only have half my channels,Thanks to the bbc,.That I had 2weeks ago!,..What I'm I paying them for?..Can you tell me that,...

    Peace*

  • No, I don't work for them. I posted a review about my digibox- doesn't mean i work for Sony.

That's not thanks to the BBC - that's the manufacturers not wanting to make analogue transmitters anymore, stopping making spare parts for them, and the fact that the analogue vision transmitters at some of the masts date from the introduction of colour in *1969*! The government are forcing the BBC to lead the digital switch-over, so don't blame them

Anyway, it's your equipment at fault, not them.

  • So it was as recently as the mid 90's that BBC 1 would shut down to blackness? I thought they stopped that in the 80s!

  • Yea, my mum who's over 50 thought it stopped in the 80's too

  • BBC 2 also sometimes still shows "pages from ceefax" in the early hours before programming starts

  • but they should play the national anthem before they go to Ceefax

  • Why would want 2 watch the news in the middle of the night anyhow?

    Bring back closedowns!!

  • i used to work night i got home about 3am, so is was some thing to watch when i was eatting me tea.

  • Well if the reccession hits the BBC then they won't want to pay people to report the news in the middle of the night and may bring back closedowns to save money

  • @kanenkitten the BBC News Channel is merged with the BBC World News Channel so they only need one newsreader. As the BBC World News Channel had 78 million viewers (a lot larger than the UK population) per week in 2008, that would result in a lot of lost advertising revenue, and disappointed viewers in Asia and the Americas.

They could however Broadcast from their Washington studio to avoid night working.

  • Nom the news is more interesting than a blank screen

  • @mark32vp Couldn't agree more!

  • @mark32vp Maybe you had just got back off haloiday and wanted to know what was going on? just sayin'

  • @mark32vp i did

  • @mark32vp Maybe some people work through the night and sleep during the day? How closed-minded you are. Did you never wonder how you get your fresh produce and newspapers first thing in the morning? Or how industry and security continues unabated through the night?

  • @tomalak16 what,,, it's not done by pixies?

  • @mark32vp

Over here in the US, the stations broadcast ads for crappy products overnight, so stations don't really "shut down". I'd rather much watch the news during that time.

  • @kanjiguy106 I know I was in NYC recently and after 3am 4 hours of that crap its boring to watch

  • PresentationGuru, can you fix this video problem? I think it's too slow on the screen. But the audio looks great. Hope and pray that they'll balanced when watching in High Quality. Diana M. May 2, 2009

  • I miss the BBC1 balloon!

*wails* I want it back! R.I.P

*Joseph* Goodbye, BBC1 balloon. We'll miss you.

  • BBC ONE BALLOONS = AMAZING!

  • on 2002 year BBC is lost the clock

  • theyve played the national anthem at closedowns since the 1950's

  • Sadly, I was only 3 at the time. Had I been this age, I would have stayed up to watch things like this. The sad thing is though, not many people my age appreciate TV presentation. They don't really give the f**k if a channel changes its name.

  • Yeah same. If only I knew when I was 3!

  • Just you wait till they grow up. Most TV pres fans aren't bothered about TV pres at the time, they only become interested in it later in life purely for the nostalgia.

e.g. I was born in 1990 and through the 90s I didn't really care for the Steve Ryde off-screen voice-only presenter era of CITV, but now I'm an expert on that period!!!. The 1993-1998 CITV presentation was far better than the 1998-2004 period!!! And the programmes were much better as well!!!

  • Dlaczego tym razem odtwarza się po woli?

  • these days in 2009 the BBC Dont do shut downs and no national anthem EVERYTHING HAS GONE TO DIGITAL TV

  • They do do shutdowns. BBC2 sometimes goes off air for a few hours at night, BBC1 still goes off air and BBC News 24 fills the gap. Most of the BBC digital channels close down at night as well. ITV1 does and ITV Nightscreen fills the gap. Most digital channels do too.

In fact, to put it another way, more channels = more closedowns.

  • I don't think the National Anthem would work with the idents they use. I think one of the reasons why they scraped the playing of the National Anthem at closedown was because the logo wasn't static. Although the current Moon ident they show before BBC News 24, would be a good choice to play the national anthem.

  • I had a closedown on VHS in 1997 with the globe ident and but intended it was burnt out afterwards and i seem to not having it anymore.

  • But I seem to remember when BBC1 had Testcard F after the closedown had faded out on 13th December 1978 when the BBC had industrial action that Christmas and it was the only time the BBC had the testcard on all night for a few hours.

  • No. I had some closedowns from 1997 on BBC1 on Betamax and they would show nothing but testcards all night. And no, My Betamax machine died long ago and I don't intend getting a new one.

  • scottish 3, welsh 8, scottish 6, english 3, scottish 7, english 13, and irish 4.

  • it's good to play the anthem at closedown it give a sense of national identity. bring it back

  • I've got no problem with bbc news going on through the night but a bit of god save the queen when normal bbc one programmes finish for the night wouldnt do anyone any harm.

  • I bloody well agree. I mean, Radio 4 plays the national anthem before handing over to BBC World Service.

  • Time: 3:03 a.m.

Date of Closedown: Nov. 8, 1997 (Early Hours of Sunday Morning Nov. 9, 1997)

    Announcer: Possibly Jane Westrop

BBC News 24 (as it was back then) was broadcast on BBC1 Since Nov. 9, 1997.

The only reason why is that the people working late at night, especially in the morning is they want a chance to see News around U.K. and the world. BBC is now a 24 Hour Television Broadcast, unlike the previous years. Do you want your closedown back?

  • YES!

  • No, I like the 24 hour BBC News services, it gives us night owls something to watch. I hated it back in the days when closedown occurred.

  • Yes, why don't we have a closedown and BBC news 24, then everyone is happy.

  • No, it's called God Save the Queen!

  • Thats a better name though.

  • all bbc1 closedowns have this music.

  • Woh, why all the thumbs down, I was only joking fellow Brits! I think the queen is great and god save the queen is a superb national anthem!

  • You're mad then. God save the queen is an awful anthem; every other country has anthems praising their country, not their hereditary head of state.

  • Good point hugboxx I had never thought of that! Down with the queen! Up with britain!

  • well my gran always says that Rule Britannia should be our national anthem!

  • no its the uk national anthem!

  • 'God Save the Queen', the British National Anthem.

  • No. UK. It was also played when Northern Ireland TV stations closed down.

  • If I had my way Signzone would be scrapped,BBCN24 would NOT exist and BBC1 and BBC2 would closedown! Stuff the late nighters what about the people in TV who need a rest?

  • Will the last one to leave switch the lights off.Goodnight.

  • Bring back the BBC1 Clock!!!!

Visit my profile for the link to sign the petition!

  • They can't do it for one very good technical reason: because of the difference in timing between analogue and digital transmissions.

  • Never thought of that, good one.

  • It Was 3.03Am When The BBC One Was Closed

  • I couldn't imagine a balloon closedown until now.

  • they should bring back the closedowns....

bbc news 24 is sooo boring and i highly doubt anyone would want it, unless theyre into politics etc. i dunno

    i miss closedowns!!! :'(

  • I've watched BBC News twice over-night and that was because it was 5am and I couldn't sleep and it beat watching Learning Zone or Quiz Call. It's normally just the same thing over and over again.

  • i miss that balloon

  • So do I.

  • The BBC1 balloon was the last hope for bringing in silence for the rest of the night.

  • Hi I think BBC should bring back the closedowns and test card because I personly think BBC NEWS 24 sucks and really no one bothers to watch it.If you agree with me please visit my youtube acount/page and tell me via channel coment i will send you a private youtube messege about what we should do to make BBC stop the BBC 24 crap and bring back our closedowns and test cards. Also I think that test cards and close downs give me a warm felling. Please do not spam this so every 1 can have a read,

    N24

  • N, what I meant was, was Pages from Ceefax on after the National Anthem?

  • No, I don't think so; I think Ceefax was sometimes on during the night on BBC2; but on BBC1 after the national anthem you got a blank screen with a ringing noise for about five minutes, then the screen went snowy with a terrible loud hissing noise until the next morning - I still prefered it in those days though!

  • Thats cos the transmitter was actually switched off.

  • What was after this? Pages from Ceefax?

  • no, they now join bbc news 24

  • but after this, it was just a black screen with a 1 kilohertz tone.

  • 24h tv sucks!

  • The BBC globe balloon idents don't really fit in with the national anthem.

  • I never watched this when it was first shown so I've enjoyed watching this, thanks a lot.

  • Wow From A Few Hours Of The BBC A Day To BBC 24 Hours A Day. Shows How Much BBC Has Changed.

  • BBC News 24 is now BBC News Channel.

  • Bring back the 24!
