my aunts husband (my uncle through marriage), his uncle is arthur gunter:the oringinal singer and songwriter of this song (died in 1978)....as old as this song is he sill recieves royalty checks from this song
This song is a re-worked version of Eddie Arnolds hit record from 1951 "I want to play house with you". Isn´t it? Country and R&B musicians changed each others material. It just shows that the whole black and white discussion is nonsense.
BTW I did a tribute to Jimmy Reed. An animated short film 74 seconds long to honor that man & his music. Elvis covered BigBossMan & BabyWhatYouWantMeToDo.

I heard an interview with P. Burlison (from Johnny Burnette R&R Trio). He said J. Burnette did the original:
Before Elvis made it to SUN he was sometimes jamming with the Burnette brothers and him on the streets in Memphis. Arthur Gunther heard the particular song - made it suitable for his style and recorded it. Some months after the release Elvis did his cover. Don't know if it is true but P.Burlison said it that way. I heard it with my own ears. And don't make me responsible for that remarks
2009framat-Could be true, as the Johnny Burnette Trio were playing Rockabilly same time as Elvis, some say before. But sometimes the old rockers memories get jumbled up, after all-its been a long time.
1st time hearing this on 78 --- as a lifelong 50's fan, this was one of the coolest moments of my life. My girl and I were dancing to this as it was playing. Thak you so much!!!
So what the asshole is basically saying is that the music that his King listened to is just plain bullshit. You can never get to understand these f****g illiterates.
Elvis also acknowleged BB King as someone who showed him how to go on with guitar chords.
He also turned up at charity gigs that were "black only", & was the only white person in there, & he still gave his time & his money. What a Racist Twat, NOT!!!
Lots of obscure black RnB artists would of remained obscure, if it were not for Elvis crossing that line.
Thanks a lot ! I knew the Vince Taylor and the Elvis versions, but not ARTHUR GUNTHER (bio on Wikipedia). I love Elvis and Vince, but this has more real bluesy feeling. Once more a black musician remains unknown while his creation becomes a hit for someone else. There's a "Best of Arthur Gunter" CD, and a CD called "Elvis pays tribute to the blues", with original versions by blues artists and the Elvis versions. I just ordered both, and am looking forward to find inspiration for my blues group.
You are retard piece of thrash! You don't even know what you are talking.
Elvis had payed about $6500 to Arthur Gunter for covering this song. Arthur Gunter had said "Elvis got that number and made it famous. But I didn't get a chance to shake his hand". Do you know anything?
That times $6500 are today's $650,000 or more, ask this from your old parents they will agree with me.
Do you even realize why Gunther said that? He knew Elvis wouldn't shake his hand because he was black. Elvis was willing to use his song to make a hit for himself, but he wouldn't meet the man who wrote it and shake his hand in person. Elvis was a racist. He said that all a black man was good for was to shine his shoes. If you think Gunther was a fan of Elvis, you are mistaken.
Gayboyselmo... Elvis wasn't a racist.. and that quote was a rumor.. There is no audio, written, proof of that, In fact no body knows who has rumored that first.
He was daily friend of James Brown, muhammed ali.
Have you ever read any quotes of black legends about Elvis?
I just looked it up, and you are correct about that being an untrue rumor. It's good to know he wasn't a racist. It's pretty messed up that an ugly rumor like that could survive so long to the point that people think it's true.
But that Gunther quote is still out of context. He wasn't happy with Elvis or his attitude when he said it.
Also, fuck your homophobic insults. You're the one that's in love with a man. If you like Elvis so much, why don't you marry him? Oh that's right, he's dead.
Ah shut up!You immature freak. Can´t ppl have their own opinions.I prefer Elvis´version. That´s it.If people don´t agree with you then they are smoking crack??People don´t have to agrre with Immature freaks like you haha.Go back to the mental institution were you belong.Cocksucking freak
No wonder why it's worth so much, I can't get it out of my head! Thanks for sharing these dude I have wanted to hear the origional version for a while.

Jezus Christ, here's whats wrong with this world.
Look at all the bullshit you're bringing in to some old record.
It's just about music and not race, religion or even sexual orientation, hahahaha, jezus.
Fuck's wrong with you people?
It's about music and Elvis's version blows this one away, period.

I"ve just read some of the comments below, & can"t believe some of you people !!!!
Take a trip back to Tennesee circa "53-54".
The KKK were running rampant.
You could of got strung up by ya neck for playing the music that Elvis played !!
And wearing the clothes that he wore, & having his hair the way he wore it !!!!
He was a revolution.
He associated himself with black people & black music , 10 yrs before Martin Luther King was murdered.
That took BIG BALLS !

Elvis reinvented this song, because his version is much but much better!
MAGICO240 3 years ago
You must be smoking crack. This version has way more soul, and Elvis changed the lyrics!
"You may get religion" changed to "You might have a Pink Cadillac"? What does that even mean?
I guess anytime a controversial lyric came up in a song he stole from a black person, he just inserted "Pink Cadillac" and no one noticed.
If Elvis ate an ice cream sandwich and turned it into shit, you Elvis fans would still think it tasted better than the original.
ProudAnselmo 3 years ago
Elvis did use the line you may get religion baby but only in his rehearsal on Elvis That's The Way It Is.
Love Elvis, but this version is much better imho!
