Many cyclists are travelling at 35 to 45 km/h on the road. To be pedantic though, if roads are just for cars, where do you suggest motorcycles and trucks travel?

Nothing but the road. And while a bike path may be great for one rider or for a parent and child to ride on, a whole cycling club of 30 or 40 riders cannot train on that same shared bike path. You obviously haven't given it much thought.
@titetie Cycling isn't a sport, it's a mode of transport. Cycling races are sport just as car races are sport. However, that does not mean the roads are set aside for car racing or cycling races. So no you are wrong - cycling as a sport does not have the road at their disposal. Cycling clubs should be using bike specific locations such as bike paths and velodromes. If these venues aren't available they should fundraise to create such locations.

Yes there is a bike path alongside Beach Road, but imagine if a group of 80 cyclists were to ride on that path, its not possible and more dangerous than the road, for the riders and any pedestrians who also share that path.

Bike riders *are* allowed to take a whole road lane actually (not that they often do). That's the law. So I don't see that as special treatment.

How many of you live in the ACT? No ACT cyclists ever follow the rules. Either they're on the road, ducking and diving and causing accidents, darting through red lights, or they're on the foot path, knocking people flying. i walk around the ACT. I've had them scream at me to move off the footpath, when there's a perfectly good bit of dirt or a *bike path* for them to ride on for 3 seconds. Some of us are just sick of being milliseconds from an accident because of cyclists. I'm on her side.

Julia, to suggest motorists should take out cyclists is disturbing to hear. I myself have 2 to 3 nears misses a week while riding into the city for work everyday, and over my 25 years I have lost 6 close friends to motorists, and the death of young people with young families is not funny.

Yes there is a bike path alongside Beach Road, but imagine if a group of 80 cyclists were to ride on that path, its not possible and more dangerous than the road, for the riders and any pedestrians who also share that path.

As a cyclist AND driver (as many of course are) - I have to say that some cyclists are responsible but many aren't - on a busy section of road it is pure ignorance and selfishness not to use a designated path unless you're up to running WITH the traffic - the drama is cyclists insisting on running in traffic (and yes, being on the side of the road where there is insufficient room for cars to actually pass safely IS running IN traffic) when they have no intention of travelling much more than 20k

Bike riders *are* allowed to take a whole road lane actually (not that they often do). That's the law. So I don't see that as special treatment.

Her comments won't lead to deliberate murder but shift the middle ground for acceptible behaviour on roads. I've had drivers often swerve towards me and try to startle me with shouting as "a joke". Dangerous and offensive.
