I am so sorry for your loss...he looks like he was so special....I had to put one of my dogs down last year too and I may have to put my other one down this ear due to heart problems.....Its so hard to do and we miss them so much...sigh :(

Not aggression, it's a submissive gesture - you can see him doing other calming gestures like licking - a claw could be perceived as threatening.

So you're saying that it's growling and not smiling because... because it happens with someone gets close? that makes no sense.

I'm no expert, but I am friends with a guy who owned a smiling dog (a cocker spaniel) and I'm a long time dog owner. There are other gestures that go along with growling which aren't here.

Seems you just can't recognize them ^^
