It's a good idea. Next time, to make it easier, you can have a friend cover up the hole on the unclogged side of the sink. Then, place the plunger in the hole in the clogged side of the sink and fill the sink with water until it barely covers the plunger. This will create a vacuum and help make it faster to push the clog into the drainage.
If your sink has a dishwasher drain connected to it, then you can use a hose clamp and clamp on the drain hose to further create that vacuum.
