The last sentence is such a good take on the whole film because (I at least) was the whole film looking for the answer on Angiers trick not willing to believe the cloning was the real deal, while it just stares you in the face.
@spilfonalenga1 thats hugh jackman, or whatever the character name is...the point is that the machine not only transported the person, but that transported person was a copy, and the original (the one who went into the machine) stayed right where he was...so to get the trick to work, hugh drowned himself every night
But the thing about killing the clones is that, each time, he didn't know whether he would fall into the tank or be the prestige. But of course, the trickiness in cloning himself is that he is now two identical people who believe they are the original. Effectively, every night he is dying AND appearing with a flourish at the end of his show. It simply depends on his perspective.
angier is dead what the director is showing at the end with the clone in the tank is the lengths that angier went to for his trick........that storage room was filled with tanks..containing all the clones he killed
it has a great discussion about the movie, some great comments, it really helps get a wider picture. but still, i must say that it doesn't logically explain this last scene. another logical possibility that might explain the movie: angier and lord caldlow are not one person, but two, twins just like the borden and fallon. root killed both of them, and played their parts. haha i know crazy, but logical.
My favorite movie. I mean, come on, who doesn't like magic, or in this case real magic? Especially at the end, it leaves you thinking, and you have to watch it over again to realise if you were really watching closley. Great vid
at first i thought he was alive at the end, then i've read this explanation:
movies nobs.net/the-prestige-explained
and then agreed that he is dead, then i noticed the second comment in that explanation from the guy who points out that nobody saw a little but important thing in a water tank! and the line "are watching closely" is just for us viewers, who didn't watch closely from 1:33 to 1:35? what do you see?
last scene is ingenious! you cannot possibly say whether borden fooled angier or angier fooled borden and us! could he be alive?! here are some clues:
if angier is really dead, why would director show us clone in the water (appear to be dead)?
Why would director right before final sequence show as many hats (more then one) left in the woods? it looks that those hats symbolize many clones of angiers that he created for himself.
the final line is for the people: "are we fooled?"
I reckon Angier is still alive - he made 100 clones for 100 performances - who's to say he didn't keep more than one clone? As he knew Borden wouldn't be the sort of guy who wouldn't let it go - I reckon he was counting on him to take revenge - Angier probably kept another clone back at his estate - anythings possible - he was a pretty secretive cat to begin with - seeing as he lied to his own wife about being named Angier instead of him being really Lord Cordlow
@nickthegreek992 i think that the one at the end is a clone if you look carfully the one that goes into the teslas machine always falls down thetrap door and a new one 'the clone' is made somewhere else
now your looking for the secret. but you wont find it because of coarse, youre not really looking. you dont want to work it out. you want to be. fooled.

I just realized that Borden was bowing during the prestige. An excellent scene. Effective, thorough, beautiful.

@demonhunter35 You are absolutely right in saying so. I had to watch it about 3 times to figure that it was the original Angier who died first.
