It's delay, set at like 700 milliseconds. You can get this effect by using a modern overdrive, the delay and volume swells on the guitar. It helps to play a strat to swell when picking.

it's better to use a volume pedal for violin sounds. it would be really, really hard to do fast violin sounds with the knob.

I do it with the knob, cause it IS easier to move your finger than your foot (less travel distance). The delay on a Spider III will work fine just tap the tempo and get a smooth crunchy overdrive (NOT the insane setting).

Digital delay set at around 800ms. You have to play in time with the echo, its a tempo thing really.
