After 4 years in band in high school, and like 6 in college marching band (don't judge me) the Elton John show is still one of my favorites that I've done and still one of the most entertaining and crowd pleasing ones I did. This was one of the songs we played, along with Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets, Saturday Night's Alright, Philadelphia Freedom, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Don't let The Sun Go Down on Me.
Although I was a child of the '70's I was the baby of the family so the music of the 60's were very real to me as well. I think they both rank equally. After that the good music started to wane. Nowadays it's a good band here and there if we're lucky.

Even less roam all around youtube finding any spot to claim gay singers, gay actors, gay entrepreneurs, etc... You're gay? Well, that's your business, not mine... The song's about a redneck guy who visits the city. 'cat' was used as a term for dudes, like 'guy', 'dude', or 'fellow'.
And Elton John calling himself a redneck in the lyrics still makes me laugh.

@mikecappa Elton ALMOST NEVER wrote lyrics. But he tried a couple of times. When Bernie Taupin was stuck for the last verse of 'Border Song", Elton wrote it. Elton has admitted he isn't a very good lyric writer.

Elton John, though no doubt a great musician, would not have been what he was without collaboration with Bernie Taupin, one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Sometimes I feel like Taupin doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

Man, when I was 4 I had the best of Elton John on cassette. I walked around singing every single word and my parents thought it was awesome. My mom went to see him in concert when she was 8 months pregnant with me, so maybe that's why. I must have watched him on the Muppet Show a million times!!

Caught a bit mentioning song about "how unhappy I was as a child" b4 a Crocodile Rock utube. Now, getting interested in reading about his life, piqued my interest. And what an individual, to sing at Rush's wedding. Funny, Elton came (apparently) FROM "Redneck" and "Golden Rule" to glitz, (& maybe coming back?) whereas I was set on being cool, now coming back to Jesus after age 20 tryin to catch up on what I missed...Now to my research- folk in "The Lifestyle" seem often to have a hard youth bio.

So talented! ........he started playing at the age of 3, within a year, his mother heard him picking out "The Skater's Waltz" by ear He showed musical aptitude at school, including the ability to compose melodies, and gained some notoriety by playing like Jerry Lee Lewis at school functions. Aged 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. According to one instructor, John promptly played back, like a "gramophone record", a four-page piece by Handel that he heard for the first time!!
